Sounds like one of two other countries.

I hear ya...Some people hate me but yet I saved them from a threat worse than death *Dominion under Bert? *The Ninja Blade/Regen Stalker and *in RP* my Brother** AND fought in three wars for Paragon...what? they don't APPRICIATE IT!?

I hope that 1st Ward and any new Praetorian content is done like this. (and maybe a revamp of the more overtly evil current content)
And a certain segment of the playerbase will immediately decide that Cole must be using mind control and memory editing and everything to set this up and just *pretend* to not be an evil kitten-murdering ******* who wants to kill all the things.

Morally gray areas? For shame, sir. Bad guys are bad guys, and you know they're bad guys because they're on the side that is WRONG.

That's generally the way it works with villains

That short story implied, very subtly, that Cole, or someone connected to Cole, has the capability to modify memories. Who is to say that Cole didn't implant the idea in Duray's mind (omgz, inception!), of using the Hamidon Seeds - then in front of his own troops, pin the blame firming on Duray, making Cole look like the level-headed benevolent leader to those who follow him, while still getting the more murky methods of attacking Primal Earth that he wanted.

He wipes the memory on Duray, Duray never is the better to what's happened, and Cole gets to keep playing the role of of "savior", while going about it in much more evil ways.

-Daio
There is another idea that sort of goes along with this. If you read Cole's extended bio, you learn:

1) He grew up in poverty, and
2) The first place ravaged by Hamidon was the city of his birth

I like the idea that Cole is a good man who has made hard choices, and even that he is tortured (to some extent) about them.

But what if, just maybe, he is a true sociopath, a scarred and angry little boy who has decided he was going to become all powerful. Maybe he met Hamidon before be became a monster. Maybe he was responsible for turning him into that monster and setting him loose upon the cesspool of a city that hurt and ignored him when he was a child? Maybe he somehow controlled Hamidon and used that control to defeat him so he could become savior of the Praetoria? Maybe he still controls him, using him and, by extension, the Devouring Earth to eliminate enemies and bolster his image as a savior?

Maybe he planted a similar plan in a subordinates mind, let him bring it to fruition, and then sweeps in to save the day after killing the one man who would be evidence of his plans?

Maybe.

Is he a tortured savior, or a sociopath on a dimensional scale?

I have no idea. And THAT is why whoever is writing for CoH deserves a bift baskets, awards, and, oh yes, a raise.

Now if the can quash the memory leak in destroyed Galaxy, new Atlas, and First Ward so i can play more than one mission without the game shutting down, we are in business...

I sure that must comfort his hundreds of thousands of victims that died for "the greater good".

Sadly no; that was his mistake. Had Bert done so, he'd now have the full powers of a god!

Next time....

Don't get me wrong... even in that guise he is reprehensible, but at least there was a moral core to what he did.

So?

A sociopath. No really, I hate to agree with you-know-who about anything, but he is the villain of this piece, and any attempts to paint him as sympathetic or grey or not so bad after all have failed. The presence of a more powerful villain doesn't make him any less of a sociopath.

Don't argue with her about Cole. Unless the devs come right out and say otherwise in no uncertain terms with no way of being misunderstood, she'll continue to think that he's just pure, monsterous evil in a flesh suit. And even if they do that, she'll probably find some way to twist it to fit her own black and white idea of morality and that only good and evil exist. Intriguing storytelling be damned!

Neonates? Are there lots of newborns casting divination spells in Paragon City these days? You didn't by any chance mean "neophytes" did you?

Well that's an intrigueing twist! Bravo Dev who wrote that! Well done!
It does raise a few questions and theories though....

Spoilers of Open Beta follow, I'll try to be vague but it's going to be tricky and I apologize in advance...

Is this connected to the "Coming Storm" the Menders prophesize about?
If so... does that mean the meteors and Shivans we see around in the newb-starter in the new tutorial .... Devouring Earth? O.o
Are the meteors we see seed-spawnlings?

Or are the Shivans simply using this invasion as their own window of oppurtunity? Huh...
