I was told to talk to Bliz about my character being generic'd, who is that?
Maybe your friend was confused, and thought the decision was made by "Bliz"zard Entertainment, the makers of WoW?
lol the samething popped in my head when I read that :-P
In any case I just went ahead and sent a petition under the support tab.

I had thought you were suppose to get an e-mail about it and then you could go from there. That, or you should have a rename token.
Check your email. You should have gotten one that you can respond to or follow the link and respond on your NCSoft account.

People have been known to get genericed names reversed but if the name was genericed because of copyright/trademark violation or because it was deemed offensive your pretty much out of luck.
In the former you'll probably have to be able to prove you had the name first or that you have permission from the IP owner to use it. I never heard of anyone getting an offensive name back.
Good luck in your endeavor tho.
Was the name 'Animorph'? Because I'm pretty sure that's copyrighted. XD

I had a global friend that used to roll a Tank named The Incredible Bulk and was a straight up ripoff of The Hulk, complete with green skin and purple pants. He rolled it to see if he could reach 50 before being Gen'd.
3 years later, He still has Bulk, same default costume. Now a level 50+
I see him on Bulk in Cim gathering for an ITF one night a few months back and fly over to say hey. Right as I land... BAM... He's gen'd and now standing there in plain clothes with a bunch of numbers over his head.
What he'd rolled as a throwaway joke must have grown on him over the years, as he seemed actually upset over it. The group that was forming for the ITF were laughing at having witnessed a Generic happen. I was sending him /Tells reminding him of why he created the violation to begin with when one of the ITF crew chimes in local with a snort.
Something along the lines of: "Yes!!bbq!! It worked, I pwned you fool, was quick too I just reported you a few minutes ago!!!!"
He said nothing as the timer above his head appeared and began counting down. Then the 'former' Incredible Bulk was seen no more.

It's one thing to report someone, it's another thing entirely to report someone and then brag about it and say you "pwned" them by reporting them.
It's like the kid who'd get people in trouble in school and then get in their face like "HAHA I told on you and you got in trouble! I'm better than you!"
If you're going to report someone for something, just do it and keep it to yourself. There is no reason whatsoever to report someone and then brag about how it was YOU who did it.

Also that type of jerk behavior paints a bulls-eye on his back and can get him anything from being 1 starred and /ignored to having reprisal petitions filed on every little infraction he makes.
|
But it would be hilarious if he happened to be playing a trademark violating character himself and got generic'd a few minutes later.
"Not so funny now, is it?"

I wouldn't go that far. That'd be pretty petty.

I learned later he got kicked from his SG because he started sending tells after he got silenced. I saw him a few days later trash talking his SG because he suddenly found many of his characters were genericed for copyright violations. Last thing I heard was he was moving to Freedom because he claimed he got booted from 2-3 subsequent SG's after people in his original SG spread nasty rumors.
If it's true he got kicked from those other SG's I think it's because he was still badmouthing his old SG.

The lawsuit was settled a long time ago, there is no threat at all of a new lawsuit, and there is no need whatsoever for any player to report TM violations. Absolutely none. Except the above mentioned PvP.

People like to pretend they are protecting the game from a lawsuit by getting people genericed, but the above is the actual truth of the matter. It's a form of PvP, people destroying a character just because they can.

Most of the time I send a tell to violators, warning them they'll likely get generic'd if they keep their name/costume/whatever. If they respond that they know, I nod my head and go on my way. If they respond that they didn't know, I'll explain why they are skirting a touchy issue. If they respond combatively, then I'll petition them myself. (This hasn't happened very often; City players are generally cool people.)

However, I do agree that some players are truly only participating in that form of PvP, as you put it.
Even some that believe they may be serving the company... are really just a bit taken with this aspect of "power".
It happens... It's pretty common, really.
I have never been involved with any name genericizing or anything... so, there's no inherent bitterness with this subject for me.
There are a lot of cases of names and such that are fine, but if they're reported... BZZZZT... tough luck for that player.
Too many common words have been used as names over the course of comicbook history.
Anyway... I'm just rambling.
and round up everyone that knows more than they do"-Dylan
So far as I know, there is no reason to care about parodies, and little if any to care about homages. Basically, parodies and homages are generally fine. Yes, people feel the need to freak out anyway, but so far as I can tell it's over nothing -- there isn't an actual liability/risk issue.
There is still part of me that misses the days of seeing Mavel/DC clones running about. I remember a well done FF team, Green Lanterns, Ravens, Hulks and who can forget the plethora of Gokus and Vegitas.
The upside is that it does force players to exorcise some amount of creativity when it comes to costume design.
That said I too have a dabbled to see how accurate I could make a costume that originated somewhere else. One of my minor characters have Halloween costumes to make him look either like the Martian Manhunter or Spock (the character is a 4 1/2 foot tall Roswell Gray alien who normally flies around in a silver metallic space suit, he finds the outfits funny). I even have a pallet swapped Dr. Doom robot mastermind I rolled when CoV first came out just for laughs. Of course he's not called Dr. Doom (well he is but in Finnish I think) and there is no background write up.

Well the 2nd character I every made was based on Kei from the original Dirty Pair.
Also have a look-a-like Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell and look-a-like Claire from Claymore.
A quick stop at a tailor can "fix" any costume transgression and their isn't any background or name infractions, just their look.

One of my main characters was generic'd this morning and I was told by a friend to talk to Bliz about getting the case looked at. My friend is away now so I have no way of contacting her to figure out who Bliz is and how to contact them.
Any ideas?
