I posted there! I guess that makes 2 whole users of CoH who have a problem. (To AMD anyways).

I'm running 11.6 and getting lock-ups (game, not whole computer) every so often when playing. Not visibly related to activity.

... But my control panel thing doesn't notice anything when I ask it to check for updates, so what's with that? Silly AMD.

Just adding my dissenting two cents' here:

I installed the WHQL 11.8 drivers the other day, and have had NO issues whatsoever. I've played on the beta server, took part of last night's training room stress testing, and done normal stuff on the live servers, and everything is running well.

Windows 7 32-bit
Intel e8400 3.0 ghz o/c to 3.6 ghz
ATI Radeon 5850 GPU
4 gigs RAM

I'll post again should thing go bad, but I've played for well over 30 minutes at a time and have had no problems.

I think the real question is: did you have issues before and no longer have them with 11.8?

I've played for several hours with the graphics slider all the way to the right in both beta and live, through trials and raids. No issues for me, but this computer never had issues to begin with so I didn't think it was worth reporting unless I did run into problems.

Well, was using the 11.8 drivers and roughly every half hour or so the client would freeze without warning. A couple times after clicking several times i would get the "Program is not responding" popup from Windows, the other times i got bored and shut it down with task manager.

When i rolled the drivers back to 11.7 it didn't lock up without warning anymore, instead it would randomly, occasionally lock up when exiting a mission. The loading bar would reach about 33% and freeze there.

With both sets of drivers and the 6950 i wasn't running any iTrials or the like, just soloing and regular teaming.
i guess i'll try the 11.4 drivers and see how those go.

Edit: System specs-
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110622-1506)
System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: P55A-UD4P
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
Central Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Memory: 4096MB
Video Device Name: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series (Sapphire Toxic HD 6950 running at the standard settings for that model.)
Manufacturer / Chip: ATI Technologies Inc. / ATI display adapter (0x6719)
Video Memory: 3824 MB
Driver Version: 8.872.0.0
Driver Date: 7/7/2011 11:28:26 PM

Edit again: Also, on my older ASUS EAH4870 i'd been using the 11.7 drivers with just the occasional client crash when i'd been playing for two hours or more, usually in an iTrial. My FF/Rad Defender was crashing rather consistently in iTrials until i made an /unloadgfx macro and used it once or twice per iTrial. Had no crashes at all when i did that.

Went with the 11.4 drivers and no crashes at all. Even ran a Lambda and a BAF back to back with no issues.

Here's hoping the 11.9s work out better for me when they come out.

Running for about an hour and 40 minutes on the 11.8's while on beta before the game locked up...I'll probably be rolling back to 11.4's as well. That is If I want to actually team or do an iTrial or anything

I may have to try these 11.4 drivers. I just had a lockup, get this, logging in.

Like. I clicked Login and the game froze before it could display the EULA/ToS for me to Accept.

Update: Went back to 11.4, no luck. Still hangs all the time. ... Update AGAIN: No it doesn't, that was a "can't connect to login server" freeze.

Another data point: I just upgraded my card from a 5850 to a 6970. Same brand (XFX, though I think they were both reference designs anyway). Didn't touch the driver. Just swapped the card. Wasn't locking up before. NOW I am.

This was with the 11.6 driver. Couldn't remember the last time I crashed CoH. Soon as I put the new card in, it froze within maybe an hour of starting the game. Insalled 11.8. Crashed again last night on a Sutter TF. And yes, I'm on Win7 x64.

The screen just freezes, requiring me to kill the client. Doesn't take the system down. Not yet anyway.

Am using an old XP PC and I could use 11.7 except for the gfx driver 10.12

(Sapphire Radion 4650 HD AGP)

Just updated to 11.8 and all is well, no more ATI2MTAG.SYS BSOD crashes from the graphics driver.

And get this the FSAA/AO bug goes and my framerate is up!

100% better than before so in my opinion 11.8 is a go.

Edit: Looks like the 64 bit driver still needs some work but appears 11.8 32 bit is working fine.

Hmm, I said I was going to report back, didn't I? 11.8 has the same problems (I am also running 64-bit Win7), random game crashes (no dialog box asking me to report the error) and once in a while a hard blue screen crash that reboots my computer.

I will try 11.4, I guess. I thought I had tried it before.

I reported my specs and that I was not having any issues because these sort of threads (ATI, in particular) tend to become incredibly negative and falsely paint a picture of there being some sort of universal problem with drivers or hardware when that's not usually the case. Not to say that there haven't been some drivers that screwed things up for all CoH players, but they've been few and far-between.

Besides, if it isn't a universal problem, reporting scenarios wherein no issues are occurring can help to eliminate non-causes, thereby strengthening the likelihood that causes can be pinpointed.

Quick question for everyone:

If you're experiencing crash issues with the 11.8 Catalysts, did you have the 11.6 or 11.7 Catalysts installed at some point? And if so, did you fully remove them prior to installing the 11.8 Catalysts?

I ask because I've missed a couple of driver updates and thus never installed the 11.6 or 11.7 Catalysts. And I can't report having any crash issues.

I do that when I am rolling back, not when I am installing a new driver over an old one from the same damned company. The installer should be capable of cleanly upgrading. If it isn't, then they need to seriously fire their driver team and get someone who has half a clue about software development (or at the very least stop giving the job of creating the installer utility to the summer intern).

Well, i'd uninstalled 11.7 and used Driver Sweeper before installing 11.8, but i'm also running the 64 bit version of Windows 7. Are you using 32 or 64 bit?

Yes, I had 11.6 in at some point, went from 11.6 (some hangs) to 11.8 (some hangs), then went to 11.4 (no hangs). Will try 11.8 again at some point.

Goliath Bird Eater reported using 32 bit Windows.

That, combined with your report, and my experience (after a day or two running 11.8, it starting locking up the client again [I'm running 64 bit Windows 7]) helps support my musings.

Which stinks. If it is an issue with 64 bit Windows (or at lest made worse by 63 bit Windows) it may take forever to track it down. :-(

I tried a couple tests on beta with the 11.8s, which consisted of playing the game with only 2Gb of ram instead of my normal 8 in order to see if the issue is being caused by having more than the Max ram a 32 bit system can support. The only thing the test proves is how bad atlas and Pretoria lag with that little memory, I understand now why some people have such poor experiances in the new zones.

But this got the little gerble in my head running and I thought. There is something different about launching the game now with the ncsdoft launcher. And that's I don't have to a prove an elevation of user rights to administrator in order to play any longer. And if memory serves me I switched to the launcher from the updater around 11.4. So I've forced the game to elevate and I'll see what happens. Heres hopping

*Edit: Having the game elevated to Administrator didn't help, Locked up after an hour on the dot

FWIW, I've not been running the game as admin ever -- I went in on my admin account, gave ownership of the game folder and contents to the games user, and set the game to run as the user invoking it. With launcher, same deal -- at least on my desktop, I never get prompted for any UAC stuff now and I don't run anything as admin. (It's not the same on my laptop, and I really don't know why.)

The desktop was crashy with 11.6 and 11.8, but is nice and stable with 11.4. 64-bit windows, but only 4GB of RAM right now. (I have a vague plan involving a newer motherboard and 8GB of DDR3 instead of 4GB of DDR2, but it is a plan which inexplicably *costs money* and has thus been postponed for a bit.)

I still get hard crashes with 11.4... just had one after playing for about 20-25 minutes, blue-screen crash to reboot. Sigh, guess I will try the beta some more, supposedly it's better there.

No luck here either, I have an ATI 5850, W7 64 bit and 8 GB RAM. Only stable drivers for me so far are 10.11

We have been working with AMD to try and help them resolve these issues. They have made a preview beta driver available which includes fixes for City of Heroes. The beta driver can be found here:

Anyone trying out this driver please let us know about your results.

Thank you,
