Catalyst 11.8 is out
I havent seen any weird framedrops apart from the huge weird lag on Freedom (not really rubberbanding but random dissapearing buffs, hanging clickies en recharging toggles).
Sadly indeed, it just keeps crashing. Initialy i thought it went very well, did a full 5 missions+allignment without problems, untill i ran into few peeps at the WW, moment i see em.. moment i crash. Rest of the night it was random crashes.

The odd thing about the preview release drivers GPU posted is it includes a new AMD VISION Engine Control Center, but does not include a driver with a newer version number. When selecting custom instead of express, it showed that it would not update the driver, but would update a few other things that didn't seem like they would relate to City of Heroes crashing. I decided to treat the issue as if the driver was actually new, but the version number was not different, so I did a full uninstall of my current drivers, shut down, booted, and then installed the drivers GPU posted, forcing it to use its copy of the drivers provided, despite the fact the version numbers are the same, and would have silently not installed its drivers otherwise.
I have started City of Heroes at 09:20 AM PDT today, and will not close it until it crashes.
Will report back in a few hours.
Edit: Crashed at 10:20 AM PDT today. One hour of play.
I am amazed. I had noticed the graphical corruption (but not hangs) on my laptop.
But mostly I am amazed because I have been playing MMOs for many years, and this is the only time I've ever seen an MMO vendor get involved beyond saying "make sure your drivers are current".
There may be a problem with the installer actually updating the driver. After installing please check if the atioglxx.dll file has been updated. The atioglxx.dll information should be as follows:
File version: 6.14.10.11019Since the driver is not signed you should get a dialog during the installation process asking if you want to install the driver.
Digital Signer: Not digitally signed
You can also check your overall driver date and version in device manager. It should be:
8.880.8.0
8/29/2011
Thank you,
--GPU
I used this driver last night (after uninstalling the old 11.8 drivers and running Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode), and about 30 minutes in, I crashed while fighting some Tsoo outside of Icon in Steel Canyon. I've since downgraded back to 10.12.
Yup, all that info checks out, GPU. I crashed with them.

Verified on all counts.
Sorry, but my report stands.
GPU, what exactly is the problem, codewise? Or rather, what did you think the problem was? I'm getting the strong notion that it's something to do with memory allocation going haywire at some point (not necessarily a leak).
Don't be afraid to get a little technical!
Edit: Second Life runs for me without any problems, though it still uses OpenGL 2.1 apparently. Since City of Heroes doesn't actually use any OpenGL 4 functions, why not try rolling back some functions to OpenGL 3 rather than forcing 4.2, where ATi's drivers are apparently not entirely up to scratch yet?
1. Uninstall 11.8 drivers.
2. Safe mode, Driver Sweep
3. Reboot, install new preview drivers from above link.
So I started the game, had to walk away for a bit - it sat on the account login screen until I got back. No idea when it crashed, but it was a full hard lock of my machine requiring a cold boot.
Windows 7 x64
ATi 6970
AMD Phenom II x4 945 on a 790x based motherboard
4GB RAM
Some extra info:
When in game, if I turn off all ultra mode settings, set world detail to lowest, particle effects to lowest, I can play almost indefinitely. At these settings, my only crashes are at the load screens.
Also, no other game (and I am a hardcore gamer) crash on this system.

However, it only affect 64bit, no mather how i stress my 32bit windows (Ati 4870), it wont crash.

Yeah I uninstalled and driver swept, went all the way back to 11.1 cat and I've been running flawless since.
I wanted to add that while for a while 11.7 allowed me to play the game again, the last few days I have been having major crashes. My entire PC actually locks up forcing a restart. I also find my fan has to run much more with CoH than other games (I am playing Dues Ex right now as well. It has much more elaborate graphics but my AMD 5780 card works less than it does for CoH and to date never has crashed after hours of play.
Continues to lock up often and randomly. FPS drop is quite severe, also.
Moving back to the 11.3 drivers.

I have 9 gigs of RAM and occasionally I'll peek at what CoH is using up. The most recent high point, just before a client crash, was 3.5 million kilobytes in Steel Canyon.
I run the 11.3 drivers, and ever since Irene I've been getting random freezes and crashes with 11.3 on my HD 6870. It's beginning to actually piss me off.
Aaaah, the 11.4s. I had forgotten how good this game can look when you can turn ultra mode on and still keep a high FPS.
Having read that turning of Vertical Sync (as in this thread) can solve crashing issues, I once again purged my 11.4 drivers (uninstall + Driver Sweeper + CCleaner to get the couple of registry entries left over) and tried the Preview driver again with Vertical Sync disabled in game.
No good. Client hard locked in 46 minutes. (I broke out a stop watch to give the trial a fair shake, expecting it to solve the issue.)
As expected, disabling VSync increased my framerate, but it still varied wildly. 22-100 in Ouro, 22-75 in Cap, 75-130 in indoor instance missions.
I hope that helps narrow things down...
I'm going to purge the preview drivers and go back to the non-crashing, non-eyestrain/headache inducing (only the preview driver hurts me with the fuzzy edges), 11.4 drivers.
btw, since I didn't see it mentioned, the crashes with AMD cards was addressed on the most recent Ustream: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/16990024

They're working with AMD to fix issues with CoH drivers. |
Specifically, there is still only one other reply to the thread on the AMD forums: http://forums.amd.com/devforum/messa...&enterthread=y
Please, you need to go post your hardware information and crash data to AMD on the AMD forums.
I cannot be the only person on AMD's forums about this problem.
I came to the point to start a dual boot with Win7 32bit and 64bit, as under no circumstances the 32bit Windows 7 crashes. Both clients were idle in Atlas AE near peaktime, where my 64bit locks pretty much every 20-25 minutes, the 32bit just keeps running without a single problem.
The only crash i had so far on 32bit was during stresstest few days ago, but i gues thats more the timeout of the mapserver then the client itself.

Hi all,
Since the last emergency maintenance/patch, I've had disconnect problems with drivers 11.6 through 11.8. The 11.5 driver seems to not DC me, but in time I will get graphic corruptions - texture maps going invisible, text dropping out, text being displayed as random colored blocks, power icons disappearing or being replaced with a number. Unloadgfx command seems to fix the invisible texture maps and they will reload OK, but the other graphic anomalies only go away if I restart the game. I currently have an open ticket on this with NC Support, but so far I've only gotten the can'd reply about update to latest drivers. Anyone here have a suggestion? In game, I was told to try 11.4. My card is a 6950 by the way, and it's a 64bit i7 Win7 machine.
Thanks!

I have a 6950 and Windows 7 x64 also, and backing down to 11.4 did help for me.

I gave a quick spin to 11.4, though it seems more stable, my framerate dropped massive.
Sadly i do get crashes, but instead of just CoH not responding, my entire computer locks up. Not sure if i'm more happy about it.

Still get the semi regular client freeze at around the 2 hour mark of play - give or take half an hour.
For reference: ATI Radeon HD 5750, 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate.
And, if that wasn't enough, it performs a little worse in general for me. Textures and edges in game are really fuzzy, and frame rate gets cut in half when moving in an outdoor map (regular zone). Normally just under 60 fps, drops to 22-30 fps when moving. I mark this up to being a rough preview though, and would have put up with it if the crashing stopped.
