Honestly though I kinda envy these people, I just hope for their sake they have a pancake ton of guns and ammo and RPGs and well their own small army.

That's the one. Here's the attribution I have:

Just walk away. Leave the laws, codes, regulations, and your whole morality behind and I'll spare your lives.

Wait...didn't a recently released team based FPS have this exact setting as their backdrop?

I've seen how that pans out...total sausagefest...I mean there wasn't one woman among the entire group of security of Resistance...going to be a boring place if you ask me.

Wouldnt it have been safer, cheaper and easier to just buy an island?

Jay Doherty: Yes, there was this one night that I was ready to go home but had to drop the browns off at the super bowl before I left for home. While on the throne it hit me. I stayed for a few more hours and that why we have the pain pads in the game.

The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.

I think we can be sure that if one of these things actually happens they will have a "security force" that will be better armed and trained than most other countries' entire armed forces. Think "Blackwater" times 100.

I was thinking just this the other day after reading this thread. And then had a laugh as I saw them trying to plan it out:

"Okay, so we need to hire a security force, right? So we all pitch in say a million bucks each month and --"

"Hey, I came here to get away from paying taxes!!"

This is why these "floating utopias" usually mandate that their residents already be ultra-wealthy. They want all the comforts of living in a moderately sized country while also limiting the population of that "country" to only a few hundred people. Ironically these "I'm too cool to pay taxes" visionaries will likely pay millions for the privilege of living somewhere that supposedly doesn't levy all those yucky taxes against them.

What's to stop said security force from realizing that they could just, ya know, take everything from those rich guys? I mean, unless there's a kill-switch implanted in them to enforce loyalty, it seems like it's a no-lose scenario for those guys.

It's recipe for lulz on an epic scale. Bunch of rich guys who've probably never actually worked for a living with a bunch of armed and dangerous peons (to them).

Well clearly the people organizing these communities will decide they'd be better off if they employed hyper-expensive robotic defenders that would be easier to "control" and wouldn't have to be paid. Then of course as we've learned from decades of science fiction those "robotic defenders" will eventually develop AI, kill everyone in the floating community, then move on to kill everyone else on the planet. Skynet has to start somewhere after all.

So what's the Rapture reference?

Looser building codes cracks me up.

I think of countries like Pakistan that have skyscrapers fall down every time there is a bad earth quack thanks to institutionalized bribery.

I work at building my father was the maintenance man at for over a decade. He has made it expressly clear that our building codes ensure the building will not fall down on you or catch on fire, and that is about it. The contractor can screw you every other way from Sunday otherwise, and ours did. The fat cats that had my facility built got screwed over because they where cheap bastards that went with the lowest bidder, and never bothered to hire someone to police their investment.

Yes, poorer building codes then the USA is just what the world needs more of(sarcasm off).

Yes, it is. But since other games are verboten, naming the city without naming the game was as close as I felt I could come. I imagine most people got the reference once they saw the link. But let's end discussion of the digital city at that point. Don't feel the need to get the thread deleted.

There's an expression: (building) codes are written in blood. Most of the rules encoded in our building codes aren't there to prevent people from dying, they are to prevent *more* people from dying. Someone had to die to prove we should do that differently. And usually, it takes a lot more than one.
