Art Poll: Signature Characters
for me the big ones are not some of the more side characters.
mirror spirit, i love her look, the unique top, hair accessory and even leg detail mark her as unique
flower knight. love the emblem on the back of her robe, makes her outfit look more like an authentic martial arts outfit.
maelstrom- his outfit looks like a cool modern super heroic look. it has some tights elements but enough armor to give it a distinctive silhouette and give him a more believable look as someone who could fight in a real-ish world setting. plus his outfit, while staying true to a western comic look, does have some elements that would not be out of place in a manga, so kudos from me for that
mako- love the fins and the teeth, not a subtle character but he doesnt have to be, he has one theme, a predator, and everything about him reaffirms that.
belladonna vertano. the hair, the armor, the glow guns, she just looks awesome. love just about everything about her look.
praetorian vanessa devore. so many things right, the beautiful cameo locket on her waist sash, the fine detailing of most parts of her costume, she is just designed to look like an aristocratic hero who has an air of supernatural authority.
honorable mention goes to the higher level ppd hardsuit tree characters. those cool helmets with the single eyes remind me of the "invid" from robotech and they just have a really cool power-suit. love the boss class robots as well.
For me, the signature characters have always needed some, shall we say attention.
Statesman has that really cool cape mantle that I want to swipe, but beyond that his costume is very plain indeed and that echoes a lot down the thread with the other Phalanx members, bearing in mind that they were added right at the beginning of CoH so their costume choices are very dated. Scirocco is cited as an example that a lot of people like because again his costume explains a lot about him. Egyptian style, sandstorm powers, undead, big sword enough said
Again echoed by a lot of the posts, you'll tend to find that the costumes that are the best are the ones that fit the characters. Maelstrom, as noted above, has a very technological yet militaristic look which fits his character and powers perfectly, wheras Numina, Swan etc, make it hard to work out what their character is from just the "look" of it.
Positron works, although his textures need a revamp because his costume shows that he is a tech hero.
Suggestions for updates:
Statesman is the powerhouse of the Phalanx, and (to me) comes across as a bit of a jerk. His costume should be simple, yet striking to represent him as a symbol of power with a little flair to represent "him" being in charge of the Phalanx.
Manticore needs to be a little more stealthy in his design, carrying more utility pouches and the like to represent him more as the guy that sneaks in and pins his target to the walls with arrows then is gone.
Sister Psyche could do with some custom sluttery, the pattern she has has been many the though of schoolboys picturing her in her undies, but anyone can make a Sis Psyche clone in the creator which takes away her uniqueness.
Synapse is one of the better ones at the moment, perhaps just updating his textures and head details a little would work nicely. Again we should be able to tell from just looking at him that he's the guy that punches you in the face (a gazillion times like a girl) to floor you rather than others that are more foreceful.
Back Alley Brawler needs to go the same way as Marauder, different "look" and gloves though to distinguish the two however. You can tell from the style of Marauder that he fights up close and personal so that works very well.
Swan definately needs an update, just looking at her leaves me puzzled as to what her powers even do...
Anyways, hope that explains my viewpoint on costumes and signature characters etc.

Ghost Widow and Scirrico just look beautiful! They make magic look so sexy
Really unique and iconic costumes!
In contrary... The Freedom Phalanx look a little behind the times now... It's a little unappealing when you know you can create most of their costumes in the costume creator yourself. That to me doesn't sing signature!

Edit - Hopped over to paragonwiki... she's a mind/kin troller. Again... nothing about her costume suggests that... and her origins are fairly vague to start with.
In the spirit of Olantern's reply, which is an easier format for me than trying to pick best and worst, let me give my lasting impressions of Freedom Phalanx, the Vindicators, and the Arachnos patrons:
Manticore: A+. The details really make this one, for me; there's a sculptural aspect to this costume that really works for me the way Nite Owl 2's costume does in Watchmen (which it more than a little evokes). Statesman: A. For what it is, cannot be improved on. I guess I'm the only one who likes the hoplite-helmet half-mask. Ms. Liberty: A. The color scheme really works for her. Numina: A. Visually striking, and really convincing for a magic-origin character. Valkyrie: A-. Looks like what she is. Could use a smidgen more color contrast, and once titan weapons are in-game, could really stand to be upgraded so that she actually uses her spear, but I think she's fine. Back Alley Brawler: B+. Love the gloves, think he succeeds at looking like what he is, which is basically a hero brute. I just cringe at the ethnic stereotyping that the only black main character is only good for punching things - a less tattered costume, one more suggestive of a detective than a street gang member, would have worked better for me. Woodsman: B+. Remarkably good costume for such a minor character; love the helmet. Infernal: B. For a generic costume, it's very suggestive. I'd give him a really spooky-looking shield, to address Olantern's complaint, but I don't think he's all that bad. Positron: B. Update this one so that the glowing bits on the armor actually glow, and give him back his helmet when you see him in combat, and I'm all for it. (And as a trainer, not in the helmet - shouldn't his hair have grown back by now?) Mynx: C. Fits the character reasonably well. The costume's a cliche, but then, so's the character. Synapse: C-. Pattern tights and cheap sunglasses? Boring. Citadel: C-. Also suffers from lack of detailing, it's a terribly dull costume. Luminary: D. Needs more structural detailing or more color contrast or something; at the very least, needs a livelier looking face. This is supposed to be one of the most sophisticated androids ever built, no? Malaise: D-. Suffers from the same problem Synapse has, only more so: two-color patterned tights are basically impossible to make memorable. Aurora Borealis: D-. Boring. And suffers from the "white tops w/skin" problem to some extent, although at least she has a contrasting skin color. (See next entry.) Swan: F. As drawn, one of the best costumes in the game. But in-game, suffers from the problem that the game engine does a horrible job of rendering white masks and white tops with skin, making it one of the worst costumes in the game. At the very least, needs bump-mapped edge seams to make it more obvious that she's wearing a costume. Sister Psyche: F. Olantern speaks for me on this: a 60+ year old psychic with the attitudes of a woman of her time does not dress in a stripperific costume. There's nothing wrong with it as a costume, but it completely and utterly clashes with the way the character has been written. Ghost Widow: A+, for all of the reasons everybody else gives. She's also the only Arachnos service head to wear something that is recognizably related to the uniform of those who serve under her, for which I give even more props. Captain Mako: A. Looks exactly like he should look -- although in my mind, I imagine him as a little taller than he is in-game. Dr. Aeon: A. Looks exactly like what he is, a mad scientist in power armor. The gloves are just detailed enough and just barely big enough to make him look distinctive. Lord Recluse: A-. Love the imposing height, the spooky helmet, the cape, and the arms. Hate the fur trim. Barracuda: B. I love the Coralax design overall; I just feel like, at her rank, she should look less generic. Scirocco: B-. Somehow, he (a) doesn't really look Arabic to me, and (b) doesn't look all that intimidating - although it's possible that latter could be fixed with better idle animations, I don't know. I'm also not crazy about the tights; he seems to me like a character who would wear robes. And he should also be wearing his sword when he appears as a contact. Some of the detailing is nice. Black Scorpion: C. Love the armor, hate the weird scarred-up head, since there's no canonical explanation for why he should look anything but ordinary. Ice Mistral C-: It's an okay-looking costume, but nothing about it says "mystic" to me. A blue female version of the Mu Mystic costume, open-faced, with those same shoulders, would work better, imho. |
Tech Support Rule #1 - They will lie to you. Usually intentionally.
I agree with everyone else that Ghost Widow's look is stunning and does what it needs to, so other than that:
Recluse is nicely imposing. The pieces and colors all feel royal and evil, as well as powerful. The animated legs are interesting and hold your attention, and the fur on his back nicely reinforces both the spider and ruler effect for me. And a frightening spider at that (cause any spider you can refer to as visibly furry is going to be horrifying).
Mother Mayhem I am a fan of, actually. Maybe because her redesign is so different from her Pre-GR look, but in a pretty way. I *love* her colors and the hair. The problem with her outfit however is that I'm not seeing that controlling side of her. I believe from her outfit that she would cause all kinds of mayhem, but that "mother" (big quotes on that) is not being communicated in the look, pretty as it is.
Dominatrix- Her look is fine so long as you can imagine her holding that whip (since she doesn't really use it nor would it make sense for her to hold it all day long in her trainer model.) She's the one doing the dominating, so putting her in a more bondage-y outfit wouldn't be right. The colors are dark and go well together, but something about her doesn't feel overpowering or demanding enough.
Siege- Obviously this is the most drastic redesign. It tells me a lot more about Praetoria than the character, being that it's a little more militant/power-obsessed. I got the feel that they don't care so much about him looking human as being the biggest killing machine possible. I'm not crazy about the look (I can't say for sure why it doesn't click with me) but I think the idea is right
Sister Psyche- To be frank, I feel either her look was made during a developer dry spell, or her personality was born out of the thought that it would be hilarious for a mind reader to be offended by lewd thoughts. She doesn't look powerful, immortal or even wise. It just looks like fan service. And while I understand from an advertising perspective that's good to have, it's just not meshing with the personality and backstory that's being presented.
In all honesty, I could toss out an opinion for each character, but those are the first few that came to mind.

THIS. I hate swan's look. To this day I'm unsure what her powers are... I think I recall in the game she's some sort of light blaster, but in the comics she was more like a controller. As well, it doesn't convey her story or anything else.
Edit - Hopped over to paragonwiki... she's a mind/kin troller. Again... nothing about her costume suggests that... and her origins are fairly vague to start with. |
I can see Flash's suggesting speed.
Batman could easily be Fly and Sonics I guess, seeing as he's got the whole bat thing.
So basically I'm asking, what exactly does Mind/Kin Troller outfits look like?
I'd say it's more that he outfit just needs work.
BrandX Future Staff Fighter
The BrandX Collection
Swan and Black Swan for the minimalist simplicity of their costumes that doesn't betray how powerful they really are.
Noble Savage because, apart from Mako, he's the only other therianthrope (and seeing as I play 7 rabbits and 7 hares those hold a special place in my heart). I especially like his face.
Scirocco because he's all dark, twisty and angst ridden and the costume reflects his darkity dark dark soul.
Lanaru (I think?) because I adore column like dresses and he is also blue. Plus he's the biggest thing in game!
Vanessa DeVore for the regalness, gaudyness, divine like lustful decadence that costume has.
And for the oddball ones... the Hydra spawn because they are cute and hugabble and remind me of great big plush toys and the Hamidon Seed because it is so damn cute (reminds me of a whale).
I'm sure there are more but I can't recall at the moment.

Ghost Widow gets top marks from me for one main reason: I saw her on the CoV game box years before I actually played the game and still remembered what she looked like when a friend convinced me to sign up.
Hmmmm, as far as the signature characters... many of them are great looking. Among them, are:
- Scirocco - I am not sure what it is about him, but I have always really liked his look. I think it's his hair that does it for me, visually. But it is also his haunting eyes and facial expression.
- Mako - Visciousness personified! Plus, it doesn't hurt that he has some of the coolest looking signature powers too!
- Synapse - I LOVE his chest insignia. For that matter, I love Neuron as well. All the grey-ish machinery type stuff on him is very nice looking.
- Nightstar - I really like her appearance, especially the black/blue color and the long fore-arm blades. She looks very imposing... even for a robot.
- Eochai - And for that matter the Fir Bolg as a whole. There is just nothing cooler than a giant flaming-headed pumpkin that hurls pumpkin bombs at you Green Goblin style. Also, the viney-ness of his limbs and body are well executed.
- Jack in Irons - He is INTIMIDATING. Between his giant club, his prodigious girth and the bunch of heads he carries around, he pretty much emenates scary... and perfectly fits the zone of Croatoa.
- The Greater/Lesser Devoured - By FAR my single most favorite enemy design in the game. I think it comes down to the tentacle chin, but honestly I just really think these creatures do a great job at diversifying the visual appearance of the Devourign Earth.
- Lusca - Fighting a giant octopus? What's not to like? I kinda wish the Independence Port zone was easier to traverse so that I would have more excuses to go there. I really enjoy seeing Lusca lounging in the water as I fly above her... I *wave* to her EVERY time I see her. She is a part of that zone to be sure.
- Maelstrom - Of the newer characters, I like him the best. He has an excellent color scheme, great individual pieces, wonderful promotional material and sweet guns. What's not to like? Oh and the face-mask bit? That piece alone makes me happy to see him.
- All of WISDOM - I really like that Foreshadow was added as a trainer to the Hollows... but ALL of those characters need to be in-game and with more screen time.
- Freakshow - Everything about them is awesome. But... umm... how do they eat and use the bathroom? Also, some more female Freaks would be cool.
- Clockwork King - You can't beat the brain in the jar.
- Crey Scorpinoids - Their tails ROCK... and need a lot more exposure.
THIS. I hate swan's look. To this day I'm unsure what her powers are... I think I recall in the game she's some sort of light blaster, but in the comics she was more like a controller. As well, it doesn't convey her story or anything else.

I love her shoulder cape. It's amazing. But the combination of the yellowish skin and the Tops with Skin (Frost) is not working. Although It's supposed to have a sheer effect on the lower abs as far as I can tell and I like the effect on other toons.
Definately needs updating even more than most of the signatures in my oppinion. But gain...the shoulder cape and her head dress are amazing items. But one issue must be with the cape and the clipping because the hair choice is horrid.
She is supposed to be sexy and ggracefull in my oppinion.
Who really 'clicks' with you? Who looks the coolest/most intriguing/scariest, etc?
|
- Ghost Widow, The design, colour and especially the hair all just _work_ (though all the widows could do with updating to make their _coats_ look less like "butt capes")
- Statesman It's the cape (The shoulder ruffle) and the faceplate that make him, the rest is so-so but the bundled cape and the Hellenic faceplate really _make_ him who he is.
- Sister Solaris The modern Sister Psyche could do with taking some queues from her historic duplicate
- Sirocco Fantastic silhouette, though he's so slight he tends to disappear in combat, could do with more iconic and "bigger" animations.
- Lanaruu/Ruladak/Ruularu Please, please use the Ruularu model somewhere, it's _fantastic_ It's Galactus but _better_. The lack of use of the shadow shard is _criminal_
- Romulus Augustus/Nictus Romulus Yeah, perfect, unique silhouette, Nictus Aura really makes him stand out. The bulk helps identify him.
I don't like:
- Siege (and to a lesser extent Nightstar) The overall designs are great _but_ there should be notable differences in silhouette between a signature AV's and any mass-produced minions. I would have changed his shoulders, upper-arms and head, something to show his intellect (like an actual face).
- Positron His armour has always looked boring and generic I get no feel who he is supposed to be, other than the colour I'd lose him in a batch of Crey suits. but it's pretty much a fixture now.
- Countess Crey Awful, just terrible, theme, design and mechanical execution, She look like a streetwalker not a Countess.
- Manticore Needs Moar Batman! Seriously for a "natural" Hero he needs less spandex and more armour, like maybe the Exoproto normal-map.
- Black Swan Too generic, to different compared to Swan. The colour-swap version was better then the current rush-job
- Belladonna Vertano She's ok but suffers from "Not unique enough" I think that if her outfit deviated in colour from the resistance norms it might be better... perhaps black and glowing blue? Also there is something very _wrong_ with the mesh for her face, it looks stuck-on and deforms oddly when you look to the side of it, she does not look attractive.
- Regent Korol All the tarantulas look _fantastic_ but Korol's "eye crown" really doesn't say "Regent" to me, I'd go for some gold detailing, and more cabling, make it really look like she is packed to the gills with sensor equipment. Maybe have her legs visible like the queens but have yet more sensor cables burrowing into her flesh (This might also give here a more unique silhouette)
But that aside. I don't really remember the visuals for most of the Signature character here's why:
- They often fly (or move quickly) and move so erratically that the only visual impression you get is of a Ferret on speed with ADHD
- They are often using the same animations as everyone else hence their unique silhouette gets lost.
- The often have power effect that totally obscure their visuals
- Players are using powers that totally obscure their visuals
I know we need visual indicators, but I think we need more halo's and less whole-body-glow-type powers. Perhaps AV's could get some periodic repel bursts and/or debuf-clear/detoggle-pulses so that we can actually _see_ them.
I have a lot to say on the subject, so please bear with me
*Ghost Widow: Because it had to be said. Ghost Widow's design is very stylised, very striking and very memorable while managing to still be simple and unobtrusive. The start monochrome contrast of colours underpins the sleek, elegant design of her suit while the predominantly black theme gives her an air of mystery. Whoever designed this, top marks!
*Hequat: She's singularly unique in the entire game for having an almost entirely shamanistic/tribal theme going. I don't think there's a single costume piece on Hequat that I don't want, but everything she wears more or less works to a theme that's wholly absent from our own use. That, and the... "Feather boas" she has on her hands and feet give her a more robust look, which this game's female characters sorely lack otherwise.
*5th Column Requiem: I love how in a faction stocked with 10-foot-tall super soldiers, giant robots and towering werewolves, the biggest, baddest guy used to be this short petite guy in a simple uniform. Sure, he had a flaming head, but he was still a normal-sized guy, yet he was one of the strongest characters in the 5th Column prior to their subversion. This is a concept I just love - power doesn't equal size, and oftentimes being bigger just makes you slower and more unwieldy. It's only the most awesome of bad guys who manage to be strong AND compact. Requiem has that.
*The Real(?) Nemesis: Going back on my previous point, I like Nemesis' many Fakes because they're big. They're roughly a third to a half taller than the biggest we can make, and they come with giant boots and gloves. If ever there was an enemy in-game who had a sense of weight and power to him without also having a sense of fat and immobility, that would be the Fake Nemesis automatons. These things really look like the battering rams of the Nemesis army, and I've always loved their design.
*Rikti Chiefs: These guys are incredible. They were great before the I10 redesign, and they're so much better now. Mentalists, Mesmerists, Soldiers, they're all amazing, in all incarnations. Their feel of very heavy, very bulky armour is almost unsurpassed thanks to the Rikti's odd frame of small torso with large hands and feet. This makes them look big without feeling fat. The jetpack things on their backs also add to the overall design, and the fact that they glow at night (and only at night) is just AMAZING! By contrast, though, enemies like Hro and Yukon are more than a bit absurd, strictly because of their unnecessary size.
*Black Scorpion: This is almost exactly what I had in mind when I designed my own giant cybernetic man. The melding of machine body and human head is interesting enough, but the fact that the body is so big that it comes up over the head is even better. The downside is that this makes the character look a bit fat and unwieldy, but the design is good enough to stand on its own anyway. I think the scorpion tail is the only thing I don't like. Butt-mounted weapons have never been my "thing."
*Lord Recluse: Everything the Statesman's design does wrong, Lord Recluse's design does right. He is dark and sinister, he wears actual clothes and armour and his helmet covers his entire head. And if her were just an armoured spider, that would be cool enough, but I really think what ties the costume together is that fur collar he has going. This takes his costume from just a power armour dude into an actual high-class ruler, because let's face it - that fur collar has no purpose but to look snazzy. And when you can combine evil metal armour with snazzy fur and classy clothes... You've got it going on! He's also the only "spider-back" character in the game who has his spider legs spread out, rather than clumped over his head in a broom, at least that I can remember.
*Malta Titans: These are probably the game's best representation of heavy mech. I know Heel Cole's Warworks Robots are supposed to be many times stronger, but the Titans look the part much better. They're slow, heavy, ponderous and LOADED with heavy weapons. If you took a tank, then gave it arms and legs, you'd get something a lot like a Malta Titan. These things don't look like people, nor should they. They look like machines, like walking heavy weapons platforms, which is precisely what they are. Sure, they look like they'd be slow to walk and slow to turn and difficulty to move around close quarters... As they well should. This things are tanks. These things are AAA Battareys. They shouldn't be trudging around corridors. They should be raining artillery fire on buildings from a mile away. And I love 'em for it!
*Baphomet: Baphomet is a big fiery demon. That's really all he has going for him, but my god does he do that well! One time I walked up to what I thought was a regular behemoth before realising it was three times as tall as I was. I listened as it gave out booming, blood-curdling roar before realising I had just walked in serious, serious, SERIOUS trouble! Sometimes, simple designs work best, and this couldn't be more true in the case of Baphomet. All he needs is to be a fire-breathing demon, have wings and be big. And he does amazingly well in all three categories. Yes, it's cliché. Yes, it's been done. But it's been done because it's good!
*The Wolf Spiders: Breaking the rules just a bit, the entire faction of Wolf Spiders is probably the coolest in Arachnos. They use conventional rifles, they dress mostly like futuristic soldiers and they're all black. Whenever I've imagined "evil faceless soldiers" for any of my army commander villains, this is what my imagination has given me - Arachnos Wolf Spiders. I SO want these guys as custom models for Mastermind Mercenaries!
*Tarantulas: To keep to the rules set up, let's go with the Toxic Tarantula, but the whole line is awesome. These are some of the game's most interesting enemies, partly because they're non-humanoid, partly because they're big, partly because they have those big, glowing slicing blades, and partly because they're spiders! I honestly don't know exactly what it is about the Tarantulas, but they're much cooler than the game's other multi-legged enemies, like the Arachnobots or the Jaegers. I suspect it's because they sit much lower in their legs, with much of the body hanging underneath the legs structure, whereas all others have their bodies on top of their legs like they're on tracks. It puts their centre of gravity high up, whereas the Tarantulas look much more stable.
*Doc Delilah: Obvious, when you think about it. I think she is the ONLY woman in the ENTIRE game who's actually big. "She's enough to give a girl a complex," as Penny Yin puts it. I like the Doc because she's a heavy fighter, she's a hands-on sort of person, and because she's defined as being a super strong before she's defined for being a woman. Sure, her costume is pretty simple and uses entirely player-usable pieces and, yeah, she looks like a supersized ordinary woman when they could have honestly done a lot more, but I still like her. She represents a concept that's not very common in this game. I know she gave ME a complex when I realised my "giant" woman was tiny compared to her. Thank heavens for the Science booster pack
*3K Kelvin: I admit, his costume isn't all that interesting and his personality is two-dimensional, but what Kelvin represents is what counts here. Most of the game, the Hellions are represented as the butt monkies of the street gans, acting as bottom feeders and getting bullied by their girlfriends. 3K Kelvin (and Duke Mordrogar to a lesser extent), however, demonstrate that this gang actually does have a shot at the big time. They have "heavies," they presumably have a semi-competent leadership, so they must have the potential to do more than just snatch purses and torch buildings. That counts for a lot, and now puts the Skulls in the bad position of not having any interesting personalities.
*Greater Devoured: These creatures are fairly simple, but their design is still very well done. Their tall, bulky shoulders melding into a lowered head give them a very stout, strong look while their wide, muscular limbs make them appear far stronger and tougher than a creature of their size should be. Furthermore, their actual size is HUGE, significantly bigger than what players can achieve, making them into truly imposing threats. Finally, the eyeless, mouthless tentacle face just adds so much to their creep factor. I recall one time my mother walking into the room when I was fighting a Devoured and being disgusted at the squirming tentacles. Juvenile as that may sound, this is precisely the kind of response they SHOULD elicit. Job done.
*Akharist: In general, all of the Circle of Thorns high mages look very good, in part because of their robes and in part because of their funny tall hats. They really DO look like pretty much what you'd imagine an arcane wizard might look like. Akharist in particular works really well because he stands out from them quite very well with his white pyjamas against their darker skirts, and he really does look like an evil walking corpse trying to turn over a new leaf. I just wish Baron Zoria could have been given his own unique model in the remake of Troy Hickman's Smoke and Mirrors, instead of using Akharist's model, right down to the description test mentioning Akharist by name. Opps!
That's all I can think of off-hand. If I meet or remember other enemies, I'll add them later.
*edit*
Ah, I have one more!
*Countess Crey: I love her design, or rather designs, as it were. Clarissa was clearly inspired by Sin's Elexis Sinclair, who was a very cool character, herself. Wages of Sin suffered so, so much by not having her in the game... Anyway, Clarissa's deal is that she's not just a high-powered executive and office bunny, but rather a temptress, as well. After all, she seduced Count Crey and took his money. It makes sense for her to run around in ultra miniskirts and flaunt her sexuality. It serves to only further highlight the depravity of her personal character, in that really nothing at all is beneath her. About the only serious complaint I have is that it makes no sense for her to have psychic powers, or at the very least it's never explained or even mentioned.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Hmmm lets see.
My favorites:
Ghost Widow - Awesome sexy skeery look.
Mother Mayhem - I really like her costume, and i love her "motherly way". I think shes a great character.
New Nightstar - Very cool robotic look. I love the underarm swords.
Numina - Her pink/purple robe has been the object of my want for years.
Silver Mantus - While i think her face/hair is ugly, i like her as a character. Pain so close to Pleasure
Mirror Image - Has perhaps one of the coolest costumes i've seen on a signature character. Also one i'm most jealous of.
Bobcat - Her costume is very simple (her hair sucks), but the pose she has in the club is win
Warwitch - She has a look i very much associate with CoH, it's not fancy or complex. Its just a simple, sexy attainable look you can pull off in char gen (aside her hair).
Maelstrom - Has a great cossie i think, and working holsters!
My not so favorites.
Sister Psyche - Simple costume, she has a sexy look but somehow i don't think her look suits her character.
Swan - I like the character, and i like her look, but its not a look i think is good for her. She shoud have a feathery outfit as a whole, not just some wierd arm/back item.
Mynx - Yes i love catgirls, and for that reason i think this girl needs a makeover ala Bobcat. Her costume looks terribly out of date and the tigerstripe in blue and while doesn't look good.
Valkyrie - Has a big spear on her back but fights with a sword... just silly i think. Should fight with the spear, or have the sword on her back. You have the tech to empty/fill holsters/scabbards, so she definatly needs a makeover.
Aurora Borealis - I actually don't mind her look that much. But who is she, shes very underused. I'd love to see more of this girl in the game, not just a trainer in IP.
Manticore - Probably my least favorite character, the CoH version of batman, and just for that he isn't very intresting. Batman has same problem imo, the villains there are a hundredfold more intrested than batman himself is.
Ghost Widow was the one that sprang to mind when I read the question. Then I really had to concentrate, as apparently GW hogged all the spots in my mental top 10 list.
Many of the newer Praetorians sprang to mind. Praetor White is almost iconic as thick-necked, brutish violence, with even more muscle between his ears. Especially his wrist cuffs. Just looking at him, you can almost smell the B.O., you know? The contact whose name I can't even remember with the moving hair, standing on a boat. It wasn't the moving hair (someone had to point that out to me) but she inspired in me a deep and lasting wardrobe envy. Others, like Tunnel Rat and Noble Savage stand out to me, but honestly, I can't say whether this is because of the costumes, or that they were such endearing characters.
I find Menders looks memorable, partly because they're all wearing different things, but all using the same color palette and Ouroboro emblems.
Had to really, really think about heroes. War Witch's look says volumes, that she is approachable, but don't waste her time, that she can kick your behind into next week if she felt like it, and, oh, by the way, is rather attractive too, but unwanted advances will leave a guy singing soprano for the next month. After that.... Statesman's cape? Mostly, they don't stand out to me at all unless they have some signature wardrobe pieces, like the Mirror Spirit. If I've seen their pieces a million times in the costume creator, I guess they seem a little generic now after all these years since their creation. However, I understand the reluctance to mess with a million longbow costumes, or with iconic figures at all, reducing their epic reputations to a People Magazine article entitled "Sister Psyche's Shopping Spree - How You Can Get The Look For Less!"
I like Scirocco, mainly his look . The same for Captain Mako, i like the unique look.
What I'm most interested to find out from you guys is which characters' outfits do the best job of portraying the character's story visually. (I.e., you take one look at the character and can tell what their 'deal' is) or, alternatively, which visuals are just really appealing, regardless of story considerations.
If you simply like a character's story but DON'T like the visual, leave that out of this thread. It'll help me tally up the results of the visuals you actually like. |
Marauder's looks have grown on me a lot. He certainly looks the part of someone who forced his way through hell.
Emperor Cole's uniform portays his utopian ideals very well, though his madness less so.
Noble Savage is great in how he is and looks like a wasted man. Wretch, same. It's the lack of symmetry.
Numina has the mystic look down pat.
What shall claim a Sky Kings' Ransom?
PPD & Resistance Epic Archetypes
Oh 'eck, ones I forgot;
Noble Savage: Asymmetry! It looks awesome! The giant, leonine-mecha mix really works well.
Mirror Spirit and Foreshadow: Especially Spirit. I mean, why do all the sigs not have that much detail and high quality texturing? Spirit is the single most beautifully made model in game. Bar NONE.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

I'm seeing a lot of repeated sentiments here and some very interesting opposing views. From when I first picked up this game (roughly three months after it's initial launch) til today, anytime I see Swan, I do have a moment where I try to decide if she is wearing a costume or has an odd skin discoloration. She could benefit at least from there being a textural difference between her costume and skin. That or sharper lines at the outfit's edge. I like the overall look, it's graceful, light, elegant, there's nothing about what personality we've been shown of hers that contradicts with the sexual aspects of the costume so that's all fine. It just sometimes doesn't look like she's really wearing a costume, even up close.
Manticore I originally thought looked kind of ridiculous with his mane-helmet, but the look has really grown on me over time.
I feel like Lady Grey would benefit from some Steampunk pack loving. Her look is alright and I do get a sense of dignity, but I also get the sense there's some real room for stylistic oomph in her design that's not there right now. She's supposed to take her look from the Victorian era if I remember correctly from the TCG? Now we have Victorian pieces, a distinct lack of notable NPCs who are using them and, best of all, one who could wear them appropriately.
Valkyrie and Battlemaiden I agree are lacking at the moment. Neither of their costumes have ever been that impressive to me, to be honest and I've always shared the sentiment that if the spear is going to be so central to the backstory, it needs to be utilized. Her ranged attack is a nice nod, but it just feels weird that she would use a sword with that monster strapped to her back. I liked one suggestion of giving them visible hair to add some beauty or grace to the model, but I would assume everyone on Battle Earth (male and female) has very short-cropped hair that can't be grabbed onto in a fight. Perhaps the answer lies in less bland armor? The whole silhouette is very flat. She needs pieces on her armor that not only fixes that, but have an apparent functional use as well.

I want to talk about some nicely working GMs for a sec (and step away from redesign thoughts-- I get the sense that's not really what Dave is looking for from this thread).
Jurassik- When I first heard about this Devouring Earth nasty, I expected something a bit more... slimy maybe? Not a rock monster anyway. But what really made me get over him not being some gross creature was his steel-beam-and-a-freaking-car mace. It cracked me up and put me in a sort of awe all at once. I knew right away that this was a creature with the potential to do some damage.
Adamastor- His look is honestly I little underwhelming for me. Again, this is a character that could just be grosser at his size (which is the one really awesome thing about him). Right now he comes off as little more than a super-sized version of the Pantheon minions.
Babbage and Paladin- Both are pretty neat. I think texturally, Babs might be showing some age but Paladin avoids that with his spiky look. There isn't anything outlandishly special about their look apart from the current Clockwork bosses, but given the progression of the enemies appearance, I'm not sure that's wrong for this group. What they really have going for them is they both just look mean. Babbage's face and size and Paladin's hand-spikey-mace are enough to give player's a sense that they're not to be messed with solo.
Echoai and Jack in Irons- Echoai is cool looking, but only because the Fir Bolg look cool at that size. The giant flaming pumpkin head is just neat to look at visually, and the incredibly long vines he has for arms and legs make him seem even ganglier (in a good way) because of how they intertwine to make his body. He doesn't really stand apart from them for me, but like the Clockwork GMs, I'm not sure he has to. Jack in Irons is an incredible bit of character design. He's exactly what you would picture a fairy-tale giant to be-- big, pasty, overweight, sunken-eyed-- and if you miss the chains he's sporting (not impossible) there's that wonderful, gritty neck collar of his. He just looks like a creature bound. And those skulls he carries just really shore up any creeping out that remained to be accomplished. The first time I saw him shove those bad boys forward, I just remember being very impressed by the whole image.
Sally- I just feel bad for brawling her, all for a badge. She's labeled as a monster, but her look is so sweet and peaceful. The colors and texture/sheen of her skin mixed with the eye color is kind of beautiful as well.
Kraken- He's about what I'd expect. He's probably the first Giant Monster a hero will run into, or at least he used to be, and is just a bigger version of the Hydra colored black. But that's fine, because he doesn't need anything special. Black is a foreboding color to start and he's going to be the biggest thing a player has seen thus far, not to mention conning purple and being level-less. It would be cool if there was a piece of subtle Rikti tech on him to hint at the Hydra's tie to the later parts of the game (justified by that the Kraken's power/size requires that the nearby beacons receive a little signal boost to keep it under control.) But again, for such an early-game encounter, he doesn't necessarily need to be set apart. In fact, if he's set apart distinctly and later GMs aren't escalating from that, it creates a sort of step backwards.
Lusca- This GM just deserves more player-attention. He could easily be the lowbie equivalent of a raid, but no one gives him the time of day anymore it seems. He's a really nice example of his look also having a function in that his tentacles can attack/be attacked seperately. It would have been very easy for the devs to make it all one entity and just have him lash out with different tents depending what direction he was striking, but they didn't, and he seems more alive for it. So kudos.
Kronos- He's just cool because of his sheer size. We have so few massive models in this game that actually appear in content, and even less that are fightable. (I'm looking at you, Rularuu and those 5th Column mechs from the Imperious TF). Not to mention it used to be the only way you encountered this guy was as a freaking ambush outside after a very easily solo'ed mission. There was no doubt that the Malta wanted you deader than dead, and if the initial heart attack from Kronos' arrival didn't do the job, his missile launchers sure would. In general, all white isn't a very intimidating appearance however. The only reason Kronos is intimidating is his incredible size. Beyond that, he has no intimidating aspects. In fact, I think the white-wash, smooth metal takes a little away from him.
All that said, as I look at the list of villain GMs, I can't help but notice they all seem to be just larger versions of earlier encounters. And while yes, Caleb is pretty frightening at that size, there's just a distinct lack of special to them. GMs need to be special in some way. These are characters that you only encounter in one zone either after accomplishing a chain of obscure events (Caleb) or only spawn once every eight hours or so (pretty much every hero-side GM). That kind of rarity should be reflected in their look beyond just upping the scale on a current model.

Favorites:
Synapse and Neuron: Yea I love me some Speedsters. The gloves scream some kind of power enhancing blasters or maybe just Protectors for when he goes careening off course, either way,I like that And Synapse's symbol is just boss.
Mako: I also love me some sharks. Nobody Exemplifies who and what they are more than Mako, in my opinion. Mako's gonna eaaat yoooooou.
Scirocco: I WANT HIS HAIR GIMME GIMME GIMME!*Ahem* Nice combo of different Motiffs, both Super-heroic and Eastern.
Lord Recluse: Even without the Arms his costume, with the big furry shoulders and large upper body partnered with the bulkier lower body and bare mid-section screams his spider-motiff while the whole package perfectly encapsulates the "Doctor Doom" status he holds.
In-Betweens:
Back-Alley Brawler:The "Not Costume" look works for him, but I'm just bugged by some elements he has. Maybe gloves that go up more of his hands, and don't stick out as much as his do(think Jax from mortal Combat or some of BaBs's Early designs) maybe a jacket, maybe some more color. Something, no idea what. Maybe some Biker Influence, or Black Panther(The Group, not the character) He could use a nice hat.
Statesman:
I get it. Super-man+Captain America, with some Greek influence.
It just doesn't work as a unique personality. It looks exactly like it's inspirational parts(The Mask can look incongruous) and nothing more.
I like his silhouette, I just think some little things could be changed. Why does he wear the mask/cowl AND the faceplate? One or the other, preferably just the face-plate. Plus, It makes him more human to have a head of hair and a real human face behind the plate, similar to Super-man's Completely mask-less design. His Patriotic Costume is lacking more white, maybe silver, to match the mask. Maybe in the gloves, maybe some more bits of white in the Pattern. His "Star" is too generic. Something unique, if only just a "Shield" shape for it to sit in. His cape? awesome. Leave it the frack alone.
His belt..... Maybe there's some lore reason the Flying Brick character is wearing a utility belt. But it just kills the whole look. A new belt would be an excellent place to add in some more white.
Ghost Widow: She just looks like a regular Widow to me. But a ghost, pretty much straightforward. Not a bad look, I like Arachnos in General, just, eh, whatever.
Maelstrom: no idea, but I just don't like him for some reason. In my head I think it's an allright costume, but when I look at it, Something about it bugs me.
Hates:
Manticore:
Ugh, Sooo much that could be done with this character concept and what? nothing, simple Leather Jumpsuit, Generic pattern, equally generic Symbol, and a silly hat/mask.
Seriously He doesn't evoke THIS
This
Or this:
At ALL, and those are the things he's made up of.
some suggestions.
I feel like there's a few ways to go with this Character
1: Fully wear the Gadgeteer concept
2: Fully wear the Mythic Animal Motiff
3:Fully Wear the Archer Motiff
4: Put it all together and make it work.
I'm going to try and go with 4
Wear the weapon: If the Bow is to be his signature, He should visually represent it. I should see it on him and it should be part of his silhouette. It doesn't Have to be slung over his back or anything, but It would be nice, looking like a scorpion tail, poised to sting.Or, have it worn on his belt and trail behind him slightly, Consider the new "Hooded Green Arrow" Look for the "mane" idea to still work(Plus, it's iconic for archers).
Maybe some kind of armored bits, clawed type arm-guards to emphasize the lion idea more, maybe a light chest-plate
Not only does that add to the "Batman" look, but it adds to the theme. Mane, Claws, sting, maybe have a Pointy, tooth-like mask over his face to complete the set. that kind of blends to the shadows of his hood(Took forever to find something close)
He could just wear the quiver on his back, to prevent over-dose of different stuff in one outfit. Just make it slung low so it doesn't mess up his over-all outline from the front. Even better if it's partially hidden by the hood.
Anyone Who wants to argue about my usual foolishness can find me here.

Also, total agree on Swan needing more feathery stuff or at least more stuff to her costume.
