CoH: Freedom and PvP

So, did anyone happen to find out yet a SDCC or otherwise whether or not f2p/Premium players will be able to PvP? If so, do they still have a chance to drop a pvp recipe?

Why wouldn't they be able to - for either question? The devs have been pretty blunt about what they can't do - while it feels like they ignore PVP, if the free/premium players couldn't, I'd imagine it would have been mentioned by now.

Remember, they're wanting people back and spending money.

If they are about balance in PvP and f2p/Premium accounts don't have access to incarnate powers in PvP, then that may be one reason they won't be able to PvP. I'm really just looking for dev. confirmation and not speculation though.

Probably best to pm a dev and not post this in player questions where everything is speculated on.

Zwillinger had said that F2P would bring a lot more pvp blood into the game. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble locating the reference.

Yeah, PM Zwillinger abou it. He has been very good at clarifying points (when he is allowed to).

You don't need incarnate powers to PvP, but if F2P players want access to those powers it's just another incentive for them to spend money on the game. And it only takes a single purchase to upgrade an F2P account to a Premium account. GR isn't that expensive.

So don't PvP in RV.

That is actually a good point. F2P don't have access to IOs either, if I recall correctly. I suppose that is incentive for a F2P player to purchase VIP status if they want to be anything more than vengence bait in PvP.

Ya don't need IO's to PvP either.

They will be able to PvP. In SOs. Without incarnate powers.

Heck, IOs are not a deciding factor. A well skilled SO blaster vs. an unskilled IO blaster... the SO blaster will win.

As was said in Gran Torino, "Your world is nothing more than all the tiny things you've left behind", let CoH be one of those things. Don't forget, forgive.

Depends on the IOs I guess, but I've seen good blasters get wrecked by poor players with better enhancements. Build is a lot more important than you suggest, especially 1v1.

I've heard a lot of dedicated pvpers speculating that the whole f2p deal will immediately turn people off to pvp: they'll go into a zone and immediately get wrecked. Badly. It's hard to see that as incentive to spend more money on the game, especially if they ask around and learn what it takes to make a build that is considered competitive.

In 3 of the 4 PvP zones, no one will have incarnate powers.

However, equally skilled blasters and the IO blaster will win.

I don't PvP, but isn't that usually the learning curve anyways?

That's because PvP never worked right in this game. Cryptic tried to force PvP into a game that wasn't designed for it.

That happens in any PvP game until new people learn the game mechanics.

Tanstaafl.

They get what they pay for, and if they wants a free ride they got no right to complain.

Instead of trying to recall one way or another, just go here.

"Inventions - purchaseable." ... which, being a purchase, would bump them to premium.

This game has PvP?

I kid I kid!

But, honestly, I can't see the devs gating PvP since access to PvP, IIRC, is still a requirement for one or two red-side accolades that can be had through PvE blue-side.

As for bringing in fresh meat? I doubt it. I once had Arcanaville try to explain DR to me and ... it didn't go well. I don't think I'm all that stupid, but the current PvP baffles me. It's too arcane, if you will, for wide acceptance in an otherwise straight-forward button-masher.

I've been hearing this nonsense for years. PvP in City of Heroes was great. It had a lot of issues, but it was fast paced and dynamic in a way that other MMOs were not. It didn't atrophy because it wasn't designed to be here. It atrophied because of neglect from the devs. There are bugs in pvp that have never been addressed since the arena was added in I4. If the rest of the game had followed the same pace of development, the whole franchise would've gone under years ago.

When they finally did work on pvp, they took all the input they had solicited from the pvp community over the years and did the exact opposite of what people wanted.

Usually you don't have to learn a whole other set of mechanics in order to pvp. There are vets that have been playing since launch that are still baffled by the current pvp system.

The topic was whether f2p would bring new blood into pvp, not whether people would complain about it.

If it was so great it wouldn't have needed to keep getting fixed.

Wrong. It atrophied because this game was designed from the get go to be PvE, and as such has always had a dedicated PvE population. Nearly all of the playerbase has no interest in PvP and never has. Even in PvP's heydey it was lucky if the PvP population was 10% of the community.

Exactly. PvP never worked right.

The devs aren't stupid. They focus on what pays the bills. In this game that has always been PvE content.

New players always have to learn a new games mechanics.

Once again that's because over 90% of the playerbase are PvE players and want nothing to do with PvP. Why on earth would they waste time learning the mechanics to a feature they never use.

Forum discussions frequently stray off the original topic onto related topics and even unrelated topics.

The topic is whether or not the op will be able to set up massive pvp io farms, or just look forward to ganking nubs so's he can get drops.

New blood, old blood, doesn't matter, long as they drop stuff.

Holy crap. My mind would even let me read the OP properly. I just automatically substituted in the more decent "will they be able to get PVP drops" for "will they drop PVP when I kill them".

Indeed, some of us specifically started playing City of Heroes, despite a general aversion to the MMO experience, because it didn't have PVP in it.

Or a crafting system.

Or ph4t l3wtz.

... sigh.

They will have to actually subscribe, though - Incarnate powers access has been confirmed as VIP only. Even a Premium player with a previous purchase of GR will lose access to Incarnates without a current subscription.

Actually, I technically don't PvP anymore and I won't be setting up massive PvP farms, but if I cancel the subscription on my second account, I want to know if I'll still be able to farm it.
