Well said, Dechs and I can relate, but also...

All you have to do really is realize it's okay to be attention hog at some points and the audience at others.

Which is of course easier to say than do, as people tend to want to be the big hero/name/what have you, of the scene.
I suspect you're right, BrandX

Of course, it comes down to the person, and not everyone is so concerned about others, hehe.

Yeah, it can be a tricky balance... and another reason to love smaller gatherings/teams/collections of characters (not that large amounts can't work!).

Also, for your established characters... sure they may not have major personal development to go through, but (especially with your namesake) there's plenty of business to do! New relationships and such to play through and develop and you never know what those will lead to.

BrandX, okay still laughing at that one. That is an example of taking Lore and just perverting it to your own end... which even I would boggle at. In that other game I had a character who was not the race she looked to be and was literally harassed out of the game by lorites stating "your character looks like such therefore it is, like it or not." This in a game where dragons run around disguised as whatever race they want. The community there litterally, sent me enough ingame spam (yes someone posted my bio on a live forum complete with the server I played on) I cancelled my account. This is what I meant by "in the box" thinking. I had a friend recently quit over the same issue, granted her bio was a bit outlandish, but the last person arguing with her tried to argue genetics in a game based on fantasy and magic. Unless you're a "carbon copy" of everyone else in that game, and abide by Lore to the letter, that community will tear you appart.

Here, none of my characters are related to any of the canon, but I have used the alternate worlds round about to create my own unique mythos for a few characters as well as my own space born race. Granted the game lore doesn't support their existance, but it doesn't have to. None of my characters are born from Statesman or have killed anyone (a concept I detest.) They have had their fair share of troubles with both ingame canon and what my SGmates have come up with for our weekly AE entertainment, but none here have come at me like they did my friend and I there. For that this community gets a hug from my collective group of friends ingame and out.

So now that I've done my soapbox I'll admit to some RP traits I "do" detest:

1) God Moding RP [If you're character is perfect then your story is over IMO]
2) Blatant Infringement RP [Uh, unless you really did create it (Sorry again for reporting you Jim) then you shouldn't be playing it] Homages are ok as nods to something you liked, but blatant infringement is bleh.
3) Murder/Suicide RP [Sooooo repetitive it's ridiculous]

Light RP. Every character has a story and personality traits I adhere to but I'm not about to spend all my time putting brackets around everything on a team or a task force that is not being RP'd, or in any non-rp channel by default.

(I used to, but the fact even most of the RP mission teams I've been on consist of nothing but bracketed ooc comments dampened that enthusiasm years ago: Remove the bracketed comments from the chatlog and the team would put a mime brigade to shame.)

None of the above:
MRP - for violence, action, immersion. Taking story into serious context.

Not too much of a fan for randomness and fourth-wall breaking on the majority of my characters. Basically I compare my RP skills to those of Rated-R films, you have: violence, sex, gore, dark themes - etcetera.

Carry on.
That's assuming some of us are sane.

Action RP: I RP in missions to annoy people.
Adult RP: Quite often, so long as it goes with what my characters would be interested in, as well as evolve the characters story.
Light RP Rarely unless it's against the channel rules.
Immersive: This is definitely me.
No RP: I dont habeeb it.

Exactly, to me that's synonymous with one's level of maturity. Of course I've never referred to it as "Adult" but the general meaning behind it was the same.

Sex, violence, little bit of comedy, and dark elements; a story that takes itself seriously (no fourth wall breaking bs if one can help it) while giving the impression that it's an evolving and growing society.

I want so badly to stay in character all the time and wish others would do the same but it's rare that I run into task forces or team missions or just anyone really that's heavy into it like that. But that's okay - I don't force it (except when I'm playing my Loyalist in Going Rogue - i only play with other Loyalists - period).

Action RP: I do stay in character, even if it's just to myself. When I do speak, it is in character as much as possible - often wondering out loud about plot points of the mission arc.

Adult RP: Never, never. All my toons are around my own age, except Anbaric Amber so it's not appropriate (it's not appropriate anyway) and Anbaric Amber is chaste (by choice).

I guess I mostly think of myself as immersive. I do go to Pocket D and dance and hang out and chit chat, dance, and such. But not it isn't long before I get a call on the police scanner or whatever and have to dash off on some mission.

When talking in between missions, it's all RP from me - typically yacking about my characters bf probs which often mirror my own RL probs. I like asking questions about the Lore of the game and trying to imagine what my characters would think and say when confronted with hordes of zombies, rikti invasions, and demons. My toons can also be fearful of some situations. Praetorian Ako, for instance, is claustrophobic and speaks about it and worries about it during cave missions. I don't play her to be so scared as to grief a mission - but she's not going to be 100%.

I'm interested in joining a RP supergroup so if anyone is recruiting send me a tell to @evanessa

I'm sort of all of the above (except hold the naughty stuff please, most of the characters I've been rolling lately - relatively speaking, as I've been away for a while again - are underage or barely-legal). Depends on the character I'm playing, and the mood I'm in when I load up the game.

Just remember, the legal age in Rhode Island is 16!

Though, it's Paragon...so who knows! It could be different! I've seen the RPs that go on in CoH!

I've seen several 'rpers' put their own interpretation on the legal age in DJ Zero's dimension.

And reported them.

My list would go as follows..

1.) Adult RP (basically..anything you might see or hear in a R-rated movie. Sometimes a XXX movie. lol)

2.) Casual/Light RP (sitting in the D, chatting with whomever is around.

3.) Action RP (I'm sorta picky with this one. If I'm leading a team and someone stops in the middle of a fight to type a damn paragraph..I'll kick 'em without warning. No fighting going on right then...sure..RP it up till your eyes bleed.)

No RP/Light RP. I will occasionally do/say things in character. I do have one or two characters (on other servers now) that I RP with sometimes.

One thing that drives me nuts is when some people feel driven to RP all the time even when nobody else on the team is RPing. That's not so bad in and of itself except when they are chatterboxes and annoying.

You know the ones I mean. They typically add text to several of their powers (if not all of them) so your chat box looks like this:

TeamLead: Okay, after we finish this group off we'll have to move fast to avoid ambushes, so I want everybody to listen up
RP: Pew pew pew!
RP: Say hello to my little friend!
RP: Pew pew pew!
RP: Pew pew pew!
RP: Say hello to my little friend!
RP: FALCON PAWNCH
RP: Pew pew pew!
RP: Say hello to my little friend!
TeamLead: Tank, pull the AV to the north wall, Brute, please catch the ambushes as they come in. Everybody DPS the ambushes as they come and switch back to the AV as soon as they die. Now you can't stand just anywhere or you'll trigger more ambushes
RP: Pew pew pew!
RP: Say hello to my little friend!

And so on and so forth.

Sadly, yes. Got one guy banned for a day or three, I guess, but when he came back the only thing he added to his minimum height minimum all sliders young girl was a line stating that while she appeared to be 8 she came from a long lived magical race that mentally matured faster than their bodies did and was actually more than a hundred years old. Which I guess is better than playing her as a promiscuous actual 8 year old... but... not really.

Don't forget that a lot of the Pocket D rp crowd won't say what they prefer..cause they are busy acting out the lesbian futa catgirls.

Funny thing is, I've yet to see a toon that actually looked 8. I wouldn't guess 8 and wouldn't even think 8, if it wasn't for bios saying as such.

You're right. The character generator doesn't lend itself to faithfully reproducing a child to many people's complaints. That said by changing the scales around and using the baggy top you can get close enough to get your intent across. Not that you would need to in the particular case I was referring to, as the moron was going on about being losing her parents when she was a baby in the first rikti war, being abducted to the rogue isles, and ... well... it went downhill from there fast enough to be my *only* non-spam tattle in all the years I've been playing. My first thought was 'android' not 'child', so I made the mistake of reading the bio.

At least the post-tattle retcon had to change that aspect of the bio a little. Though since I haven't seen the character show up on my server friend list for more than a year (best way to keep track of people I dislike) I have hopes the user matured and realized the errors of his ways. Though they probably just found a game that could better give them what they wanted. Best case scenario they ended up on 'to catch a predator'.

Personally, I take everything as it comes. If the team I'm on is RPing then I do too, and so on.

Action RP, all the way. My ideal are RP missions where there's plenty of time for in-character banter and conversation, with consideration for tactics and strategy. I love Immersive RP but, alas, generally don't have the game time for getting into heavy duty RP arcs and the such.

I usually have two or three "catchphrases" keybound to the numpad, so I can throw them out easily at appropriate moments. IMO, linking phrases to your powers is cool and all, as long as you keep the unaltered power so you aren't always jabbering during combat.

Unless you're my Defender, Ectofreak, in which case his mouth will never, ever shut.

Also, at the risk of sounding pervy, I had no idea the age of consent was 16 in RI, it's my home state. In fact alot of states are 16. Why does everyone think it's 18?

The off-beat space pirate...Capt. Stormrider (50+3 Elec/Storm Science Corruptor)
The mysterious Djinn...Emerald Dervish (50+1 DB/DA Magic Stalker)
The psychotic inventor...Dollmaster (50 Bot/FF Tech Mastermind)

Short answer is pop-cultural osmosis. It's 18 in California and since most TV/Movie writers live in California they tend to use 18 whenever it comes up in a show. As a result a lot of people tend to assume it's 18 everywhere in America.

TVTropes even has a trope about it:

SO MUCH this. Yes, it's a fantasy world, and RP isn't "real", per se....but I really have to wonder about the person sitting behind a keyboard and screen typing out rather graphic scenarios where someone that is obviously a child is in a sexual situation.....it (in my opinion at least) borders on pedophilia, and such people, again in my opinion, NEED to be reported. If not banned.

This is a very touchy subject with some people, so this is all I'll say on the matter.

Also, I am a medium to light RP'r. I arpees in mishes when the team is comprised of like minded friends. PuG's? Nah.
Adult themes? If it's in the character's personality. I have a global ecoterrorist that claims responsibility for several of the recent major disasters. Floods, earthquakes, volcanoes and oil spills. Graphic content, which might offend some people. Which I warn about in advance.
