Wait.... 8 archetypes?

The f2p page says free and premium players will only get access to 8 archetypes. I can understand keeping the epics to VIPs, but.... there's 10 basic ATs!

Just what basic ATs are getting cut? No tankers? No dominators? What ATs can they deny to free players and get away with it?

F2P players will not get access to Masterminds and Controllers unless they pay for it. It was mentioned in the big epic thread somewhere.

I watched the Ustream the F2P players will not have access to Masterminds, Controllers, EATs and VEATs.


Cancel the kitchen scraps for widows and lepers, no more merciful beheadings and call off christmas!

Okay, I just don't understand the idea of cutting off MMs and Trollers, or any basic ATs at all. I'll be a VIP so it won't affect me personally, but the concept is baffling to me. Logically I would leave all 10 basics and just keep the epics for VIPs/Premiums.

Restricting classes, ATs, etc. is a F2P 101 type of move.

Controllers and Masterminds are "cool" (having pets is a big draw, actually), and are likewise bigger drains on the server (because of said pets), which would be the logical reasons why they were excluded except for paying customers.

I would have thought they would bar them from making Defenders or Corruptors since the two are so similar. Maybe as a way to encourage teaming with F2P players they banned them from having their own "team" by way of pets?

Additionally MMs have a steeper learning curve and Controllers solo poorly at low levels so locking them out decreases the chance of a new person coming in, rolling one (because they sound cool) and consequently having a poor initial experience.

Because then you'd have 2 basic villain ATs restricted and only 1 hero AT.

The next step is to rename the existing ATs. First up, Defenders will now be known as Healers.

Probably, and of all the hero-side ATs, Controllers are the most like a Mastermind.

Also, Dominators have pets, but not buffs; buffs also add to the server burden. Controllers and Masterminds have both pets and buffs, making them a double burden.

Can't restrict any of the power three, so Tanks and Defenders and DPS. Of course, since DPS hero side has been the claim of both Scrappers and Blasters...hey, there's Controllers which don't really fit in to any of those three. Let's lock that one.

They should've been really evil and made the most popular archetypes inaccessible without $$ (scrappers and brutes).

They said they wanted to reduce the number of pets and potential lag that comes with them, so the pet ATs will not be available to free players.

Makes me wonder what they plan to do with EAT's...

Still unlocked via leveling? (Doubtful)

Unlocked with Reward/Paragon points? (Likely)


If its the second, I hope they plan to do something about Peacebringers, otherwise somebodies gonna feel jipped they paid for that...

The only thing I'm really scratching my head over is the bit about MM's & 'Trollers needing to be unlocked if you allow your account to lapse to "premium".

So, I have several 'Trollers that I play, have played for years, have paid to be able to play; BUT if I dare allow my account to go to "premium" status, I will have to PAY AGAIN (with Reward Tokens) to be able to play them (and then they will be permanantly unlocked regardless of account status)? .... I reeeeeeaaaallly hope I am misunderstanding something there.

Likewise, nearly my entire stable of characters is comprised of controllers. That's a hefty blow.
