Le sigh...I was right

"Jim Lee: A lot of people still have fond memories of Rob Liefeld's run on Hawk & Dove, and it felt real fitting to bring him back. The guy has a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for what he does, and we really expect Hawk & Dove to benefit from that energy. He and Sterling have really brought the momentum that you need to launch a book."

I also have fond memories of sitting down and watching Knight Rider when I was a kid. Doesn't mean I can sit down and watch it now without groaning at the cheesiness factor of it...

So "fond" memories of a crappy artist outweighs thousands of readers fond memory of the friggin universe...

Let's not forget that Jim Lee is a nice guy. Too nice to publicly say that his buddy sucks.

So what DC is doing ISNT starting from scratch. They're frakking up everybody's back stories, wiping out some characters, rewriting backgrounds, keeping others and then going forward from there. how the hell is this supposed to keep new readers from being confused? and is this really going to do anything other than piss old readers off?

Yes, that's the cover of the five-issue mini-series from 1988. I have that in my boxes. I find it interesting that back then Liefield actually drew his characters to look different. Nowadays, not so much. A lot of his characters have the same face and body.
Oh wow, actual feet! How the hell did that happen?

Yeah, when exactly did Liefeld stop trying?

I mean, nostalgia is one thing, but I just can't believe that someone at DC looked at the piece of artwork above and said, "Yes! This is what we want new readers to see in order to entice them into checking out the first issue of our new series!" The whole thing just looks... lazy.

Nah! They'll have Riker and Troi on the holodeck saying, "So that's how the DC Universe was back then!"

But you'll note that he maintains his leaping-style of artwork. However, this is offset by an actual background and not just some color explosion.

You need to remember this was his first paid gig at a professional level. Of course, he drew like he knew how.

Apparently as early as Issue #5.
Back in 20006 Karl Kessel was asked about Issue #5 here. "Anyway. By the time we reached the last issue of the mini-series, Rob's sights were clearly on other horizons. He had gotten later and later on deadlines, and more and more often forgot to drawn character's hands and feet."

Also from that 'interview' is another telling quote: "Mike Carlin once said of Rob: "He has it. He just doesn't have it yet." And I couldn't agree more. Rob is one of the most energetic and charming people I've ever met-- you can't help but like him-- and at the time of H&D his work showed great potential. But success came far too quickly and easily to him, and he never felt the need to develop that potential. Which is really too bad, because if he did I'm certain he would have left a very different mark on the industry."

It's too bad that in 23 years of drawing Rob still hasn't gotten "it".

Some people actually like his work. It's true. At one point before there was really an internet, when those who did have a modem used AoL, people raved on and on about Liefeld.

Then, of course, the internet came, and people started jumping on bandwagons, and then EVERYONE on the internet had to jump on the bandwagons.

Kinda like Star Wars Episode 1. People saw it, said it was AWESOME. Now, all you hear is OMG IT SUCKS! YOU RUINED MY CHILDHOOD! Which of course, isn't true. Special Edition did that for the Childhood Star Wars fans.
It's sadly true about Liefeld. I recall a lot of my friends liked his stuff back in the day. I can't honestly recall my opinion of him, but I'd like to think I thought his art was horrible. More than likely I was just neutral over it.

Now the Star Wars Ep 1. Some of us thought it was a travesty from the get-go(not just a bad Star Wars film, it's just a bad film). I actually don't recall a lot of people liking it truthfully. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of those people saying it was awesome simply talked themselves into thinking it was a good film simply because it was Star Wars. I know I've talked myself into liking a couple movies simply because I've loved a director's prior work. Eventually I snap out of it and realize what I was doing and how horrible the movie was. Usually doesn't take too long. A couple weeks at the most generally speaking.

I remember his Marvel early 90's stuff, and also remember being *very* confused as to how he got a gig anywhere near Marvels biggest selling franchise, especially considering the talent on the other X-books of the time.

I remember my feelings on his artwork!

It wasn't meh. It just wasn't my favorite, and I thought it was 100 times better than Gary Frank, who ruined Gen-13 for me (well that and the writing was bad...I can handle bad art and good writing...I can handle good art and bad writing...but both...*Sigh* that was a terrible time for Gen-13).

Of course, I didn't go over analyzing his artwork and missed some of those old screw ups people make mention of.

Look no further than than the cover of Suicide Squad #1.

However, if the cover's any indications, it looks like Harley has been replaced by a deranged cos-playing stripper with a plastic surgeon boyfriend.

She just doesn't look the type to say "Ooooh Mr Jaaaaaaay"

And this saddens me.

I bet they won't fix Tim's origin which makes no sense in canon which is the only thing wrong with him thus far.
