X-Men:First Class Early Reviews are Good--Really Good
My point in mentioning this was that in this movie, they showed the clear line she walked. She would never support Charles because she is being paid by the Gov't. She could NEVER be a "Trusted" advisor to Mutants.
|
Still seemed abrupt (in terms of film story, not judging the action) - as altering memories was a previously unrevealed or discussed ability and really clashed with Xavier's portrayal to that point.
...- Mystique - Did Jennifer Lawrence look kind of chunky in the film? I know she's young and probably still has girlish features/babyfat but when I read interviews with her, she just seemed more intelligent. I wondered what all the hoopla/hype surrounding her was about? In the credits, I noticed they assigned 11 people to her for the makeup bit.
|
Lawrence's rounder babyface more pronounced in First Class but in some pics online she doesn't look to have that at all. Regardless, I found her to be pleasantly curvey. 'Specially in the full shot of her standing there as blueskin Mystique. /e drool
Agreed there. Nice to know I wasn't the only one thinking that. >.<
Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.
good luck D.B.B.
In my use, I noticed she was not thin. She was a full bodied girl for whatever reasons. Her thighs were loose. Her "booty" was round like a bubble. She just looked a little overweight in the natural scenes. I might have been looking too close or maybe it was the IMAX screen.
I like a woman with some curves.
For all the people saying how good this was... it was mediocre at best in my opinion. It felt too expository and rushed while none of the characters felt right and I never connected to any of them nor did I care to. The villain was just dumb as it was a replacement for magneto rather than a well thought out character and his scheme is idiotic at best.
Xavier was to pessimistic
Magneto was too brain dead
Beast was too focused on appearance... they're his feet people... noone looks at his feet and why would you want to look like a dork? I mean if you can give yourself a normal foot you can certainly change the rest of your features a lot more simply so why go that way?
Angel doesn't have enough exposition to justify her going evil
Banshee is lame. Why would you use him? And it never really pays off.
Havoc is stupid to use... he's Scott's YOUNGER brother... why not use scott? Any reason you can use for Scott works better than it does for Havoc.
Darwin... the one character that seems interesting of the lame cast of characters
Mystique... She wasn't really a character imo, she was a sounding board and a plot device...and the people that sounded off her all did so insultingly and out of character... She's a freakin woman that can look any way she wants. They could developed her so much better by having her react to people being d-bags about her appearance not being what they want.
The only character they got right and the only scenes that were better than mediocre to crap were the Emma Frost scenes. Every other scene was just mediocre or bad...
The acting was good, the directing was good, the special effects were good... so I can only fault the studio and the writers for everything that is bad with this movie. If they gave this to a better writer and was able to keep all or most of the actors I think they could have been a much better movie...unfortunately I don't think that will happen.

This movie was 2 hours and 12 minutes. I think this is the first in a series.
Can you elaborate on these comments:
-Xavier was to pessimistic
-The only character they got right and the only scenes that were better than mediocre to crap were the Emma Frost scenes.
This movie wasn't bad...nothing can compare to the lame stuff from 2010!! Mediocre/okay is more accurate. Out of the summers movies so far, this one is 2 or 3
1. Pirates
2. X-men/Fast Five
3. Kung Fu Panda 2
4. Thor

Xavier saying things like "they'll never accept you that way" and "we got to hide" and things like that are signs of a weak and overall negative outlook on the situation and this is antithetical to Xavier's character who is a loud and proud mutant who wants the X-Men in the spotlight to show what good mutants are doing. Xavier is the complete opposite of what a "visibility" movement leader should be in this film and they don't have him showing signs of changing either.
Emma Frost's scenes all played to what I know about her character (though the whole squeezing a lady wrapped in diamonds to get her to change back is kinda dumb I dunno exactly how her powers work, but that is still dumb). I have a feeling though that this was more due to the actress than the writer... I mean her main scenes were walking into a place in underwear and giving a psychic lapdance...
In fact, thinking back on it, the Female characters were all pretty silent and almost always half naked or completely naked, so getting Emma Frost accurate to the point the movie did is no large feet considering she doesn't have to talk be clothed for most of it.
And now that I think about the movie really gave off an anti-feminist vibe with all the nakedness, lack of females talking, the talking of not accepting based on looks, angel saying the way she didn't like the way the guards looked at her... it seems to me that the entire movie centered around how they should look or want to look rather than this issue that they're dangerous to themselves and others and either that new paradigm has to be accepted or curtailed... even the main villain with all his power ultimately was relying on nuclear missiles which doesn't show how dangerous he and mutants are but rather how dangerous mankind is to itself.
Like I said, badly written and the more I think on it the worse I tend to view it.
The villain was just dumb as it was a replacement for magneto rather than a well thought out character and his scheme is idiotic at best.

I was never a fan of Shaw either...
Oddly, I thought Xavier was too optimistic if anything. I'd be interested to hear a deeper explanation of this.
Not sure what you mean by this... unless you mean too horrifically scarred from being in the concentration camps and the subject of medical/scientific experiments. With that in mind, I thought he was remarkably lucid.
Beast was too focused on appearance... they're his feet people... noone looks at his feet and why would you want to look like a dork? I mean if you can give yourself a normal foot you can certainly change the rest of your features a lot more simply so why go that way?

Now, did they over play that card some? Perhaps. But clearly her personality as such a young lady was not meant to be the sure of herself Mystique that we would all recognize as an adult.
An here I thought her inclusion was far more flat than it deserved to be.

That aside, from the beginning, part of the idea with the Hellfire Club, in the [spooky fingers] all mighty canon of the comics[/spooky fingers], was that the women in the group dressed in lingerie while the men wore the old timey costumes. Barring the occasional pantsuit, Frost has largely stuck to a similarly revealing style of dress ever since. Also, miniskirts and beatle boots were a style of the times of the FC era.
As far as Mystique goes, one of the plot points is that she was upset that Charles could walk around in public and no one would know he was a mutant. She, on the other hand, could not walk around in her normal, blue skinned form. It even seemed to bother Charles, who also encouraged her to stick to the blonde form. Erik told her to be herself. It's part of what drew her to McCoy at first, he also had a -physical- mutation even if it wasn't as glaring as hers.

I haven't seen PotC, Fast Five, or Kung Fu Panda 2, but I would rank Thor above this and probably KFP2 equal to or better than Thor...while Pirates would likely come under that as equal or better than this, just based on genre and what I know I like...and Fast Five would get negative points >.>

Thor wasn't that good I don't know what the fuss is there(I'm willing to hear why it's so good). Fast Five has the best action scenes so far(the vault drive was over the top). KFP2 has the best CGI work if you have a technical/CGI background. Thor's CGI was good too. Pirates has the best dialogue.
Sebastion Shaw is a key player in the X-Men story. He had to be a part of this....Shaw was not a replacement for Magneto.
The only way this story moves forward is if they rewrite it a little bit. Emma/Magneto run the Hellfire Club or whatever they call it and they fight against Xavier and the story really is about the Hellfire mutants vs. X-men with human as variables in the "their" game. This story won't be told like the comics.
I wonder if this supposed new trilogy will continue to put a mutant spin on historical events. Perhaps the next one will involve the space race? Asteroid M?

Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.
Just got back from seeing this. I liked it. They changed much from the comics, but it still had that X-Men comic feel to it. At least to me it was truer to the sprit of the comics than the other X-men flims.
The only things i didnt like is that they changed the roster of professor X's "first class".
And that they cast miss jones as Emma Frost. Miss Frost to me in the comics whenever she made an entrance was Va Va Boom! While Jones is just kind of cute, and meh to me.

Absolutely serious. There was very little to like about the X-Men movies. A few character performances here and there, but overall I'd almost rather watch the 1994 Fantastic Four movie again than rewatch the X-Men movies. They failed to capture any of the fun of the comics, whilst over-representing all the whiny mutant angst and missing much of the aesthetics. The slightly awkward moments with Portman's characer in Thor didn't bother me nearly as much as every moment of Rogue, most of Storm's performance, the horrible Nightcrawler, some of Jean Grey's screentime, Pyro's screentime, etc.

Anyhow: The Test for Female Characterization
1. Is there more than one major female character in the film?
2. If so, do those female characters ever talk to each other?
3. If so, do those female characters talk to each other about subjects other than men?
Gotta hit all three points to pass the test. Not many blockbuster movies do.

It's almost like you only watched X3, but the wrongness about Nightcrawler suggests otherwise.

And on top of all that, I hated the plot with Mutant 143.

The missing aesthetics and whininess were present through all three of the movies. The more characters they added, the worse it seemed to get, culminating in the atrocity that is X3. Nightcrawler was one of the worst parts of X2. They sapped all the swashbuckling fun out of Kurt and left us with Crying Bibleman.

I saw this last night with my BF. I was very "meh" going into it. He was pretty gung-ho, though. I have to admit, by the end I was sitting on the edge of my seat, shaking with excitement!
It was truly amazing. I was very impressed. With the acting, with the nods, with the cameos - Everything! Kevin Bacon was delicious as The Big Bad! All three characters were great - And so smartly dressed! Also: Sebastian Shaw's powers: Absorbing Kinetic Energy and releasing it...Kinetic Melee! I bet the Devs are happy! |
Between the interactions between Xavier and Magneto, Magneto and Pyro, Mystique and Nightcrawler, etc, what aesthetics were missing?
|
But I'll say that judging from the trailers it looks like First Class may have done somewhat better in that regard, at least (too bad the story and character interactions in it look very Origins Wolverine-ish).
As for fun, much of it came from Wolverine's scenes with Rogue, Scott, and Jean in the first, and they stepped it up the assaults on the X-Mansion and Weapon X facility as well as the scenes at the Drake home in X2. |
Most of the fun that was to be had seemed to largely revolve around Wolverine's character. Which is too bad, given that Bobby and Kurt were both around at various points.
And regarding Nightcrawler, the religious aspects are part of his character, and they chose to highlight those to set up interactions with other characters just as they did with Rogue rather than go the sex-bomb route. |
And, yes, they did the same thing with Rogue - emphasize all her worst qualities. Rogue's saving grace in the comic, other than eye-candy, is that her auxilliary powers make her useful to have around. They took away those auxilliary powers (and the eye-candy, for that matter), and we were left with whiny I-want-to-be-touched-but-can't Rogue who can't do much but stand around being pathetic.
