Wrong. Because for 2 hero merits I can buy a LoTG +Rech recipe at level 25 and sell it for 180 million. Which I did. Then I splurge 50 million on the crafted Karma and come out 130 million ahead. Plus, I can keep rolling with my new toon without having to wait around for perhaps days.

Easy decision.
I just run 1-10 in AE (solo, non farm stuff) and bronze roll at 10, so tend to have a lvl 10 -KB anyway, if it's the wrong one, it'll near enough pay for the right one.

On big-ticket items, often the "buy it now" price of a recipe + salvage is about the same price or more then what we're listing crafted IOs for. In general, the money we're making is coming from buying the recipe at the patient price instead of the "now" price.

Usually I buy recipes and am patient, but when I decided to play Itsy-Bitsy Spider again and worked out my spec in Mids', I was too impatient to wait.

So I gathered a couple billion from all of my characters and just bought all my IOs outright.

Was it smart? No, but I figured it's not real money and I can always make more.

Inf is easy to come by, and sometimes I don't feel like going to the time and trouble to craft something. Yes, that means I end up paying more than I "have" to, but it's only play money, and there's plenty more where that came from.

I have 2 sets of Every purple set sitting in storage and about 5 Billion Liquid (had more but just bought up everything needed for a AR/Dark/Dark Concept I just came up with).

I can make Billion(S) a week.

Yeah I am well aware I am wasting my money buying crafted IOs.
But its PLAY MONEY. When the game servers shut down, I don't get to keep it.

All my toons are finished on 2 servers and the ones i have on other servers are as well. I only play 5 or 6 of my toons anyways. So I dont buy anything anymore I do farm still for purples that i use to replace other sets that were cheaper.

However I dont even bother to craft the recipies i get unless im making an extra 50 mill for crafted which is rare rare rare.

So i just dont care anymore. Im also sitting on about 30 bill liquid.

that ill probably never use.

so meh

Depending on what window you're talking about... the crafting window at least you can set to not show memorized recipes, or only recipes that you have the salvage to craft.

I set it by accident on one character and for the longest time I couldn't figure out what was wrong.

That is odd. I don't see that option. Am I looking at the wrong place?

Screenshot. "Unowned recipes" doesn't hide memorized recipes for me (this particular character doesn't have any, but I doublechecked and made sure it doesn't work on a character who has memorized something).

Hmmm...

Well I thought you could. Guess I'm wrong. But you should be able to, then.

I can't check it from work anyway.

Sounds like in general, the people buying the crafted IOs are those with tons of influence and not much to spend it on. I've never had that problem, too many IO-hungry toons for me to ever feel like I can spend freely, but I'm glad there's people out there willing to redistribute the wealth a bit!

Theres a couple of reasons to blow that much moola. I have billions of inf, and while I didnt make all the inf by being a wastrel there comes a point in time when zeroes lose meaning

1) Last couple of IOs to complete a build or even to complete a power...BUY NAO!!!

2) The only one at an odd level that I want....BUY NAO!!

3) Market slots are full with slow moving stuff....one slot left. BUY NAO!

I make inf so I can spend it. I dont know what the rest of you do, but the only reason I dont spend all my inf is because having a large bank roll makes it easier to make more inf.

buying crafted.
Oddly enough, I'm the nearly the opposite. If I need an odd Common IO in
any sort of time sensitive way, I buy it NAO. The 200-500K or so, is loosely
"a penny" for most of my characters (using Fulmens' excellent analogy).

For lowbie toons, or bulk commons, I agree, and usually buy stacks
of crafting ingredients in prep for crafting the key IO's (Acc, Dmg, Erx, Rrx)
that I'll need along the way while a toon levels into set ranges (post L25+).

For sets, I rarely buy NAO (unless it's a throwaway substitute). I typically
have my set bids well in advance of when I plan to slot them, at prices I'm
willing to pay, even if it takes awhile to get them.

The other side of that is that I don't always consider (or care) if it's the
best deal or not - In some cases, I'll throw R-merits or A-merits at a specialty
item if I want it NAO and none are readily available. Sure, it might be more
cost effective to convert the merits to inf and buy more efficiently, but one
of the (few) benefits of merits in my mind is the convenience of getting an
item NAO when none are currently available - that's worth some inf to me.

Particularly with the desolate mid-range market we've had ever since merits
were introduced.

I did that this weekend for Sparks Fly, my current favorite scrapper. I had over 500 items crafted already, and the Inventor badge from University, but I had none of the memorization badges. I managed to get field Craftier by Sunday just after Noon. ^_^

I was planning to do it for more than one character, but eh, it's too much work. I typically work up the energy to earn field crafter on a toon only once every 4-6 months.

As for buying crafted IOs... on cheaper IOs I'll do that when I'm working on a build, because I can slot them immediately. But on more expensive stuff I'll take the time to buy the recipe at a low to mid level price. Except that a month or so ago I paid 1.7 billion for a Panacea proc recipe and crafted it, and did not even realize that the crafted version was selling for just about 1 billion. O_o
Will any vendors buy those crafted IOs? Too many to sell on the black market.

Well, you can do it two or three ways. If you take a week or two to get the badge then you can sell a lot of what you make and turn a profit. If you do it like I did, then you sell everything for 1 influence if there are people actually bidding, and the rest of the stuff you either delete, give to people who are willing to take it, or find someone who is afk or logging off and dump them on him or her real quick. Doing that kind of amuses me, it's a challenge to see if I can do it without the person noticing me doing it.

But then, I didn't care if I lost a lot of money in the process. Maybe cost me 20 or 30 million in the end, I don't know. Not a number that I consider significant.

Sometimes me.... Many times not me... It all depends if I need it NAO and then I just ususally spend and go about the business of making money.

I am one of those people that buy it nao over bidding and waiting or buying recipes and then crafting at much lower cost.

Part of the reason is much the same as others have stated: Being lazy in game.

The bigger reason is that I have to budget every dollar to get by in real life. In a game where I can max out my personal cash reserves in a week without trying I want no part of being frugal and planning out a inf flow budget.

Nothing wrong with folks that love to horde up inf or play the market just not my cup of tea. Just keep the over priced crafted IO's coming so that I can buy them when I want them please

Me. To an extent since I don't rock the coin to just buy everything I want, but I certainly buy crafted io's when I'm looking to do several things at once, or just pop a couple pieces while I am levling.

AFAIC, every currency in this game can be called "Fake Money Units." Someone once posted that the only real currency is time, and I agree. I'll collect various spendier parts
through merits and AMs and craft those, but the cheaper set (and definitely not common io's) pieces I don't bother.

Lets say I decide to get the recipes, figure out what salvage is needed, run to a crafting location and zone in, and craft that Acc IO, Dam IO and End Red IO I need for the three slots I just assigned to my character when I leveled up. In order to do that, I'd probably need to pay "buy it nao" prices for the salvage, in addition to going back and forth between recipe and salvage windows on the auction house interface. With zoning time, call it 5 minutes.

Or, I could overpay by 300k per enhancement to just buy them now, call it a total of 1M Inf wasted, but probably 4 minutes of time saved. Thats enough time for me to log into a market character, turn over a couple of items, and make roughly 200M Inf (I tend to deal in low turnover, high margin items).

So which is the better use of my limited game time?
