Discussion - Check out the All New Steampunk Booster Pack Trailer!
All the images of the steampunk pistols and rifle makes me wonder what, if any, secondary powersets wouldn't look jarring with them. I don't suppose there's any chance of steampunk machines for the Traps set? or Devices? You know, replacement pseudo-Victorian versions of the Triage Beacon, Acid Mortar, Force Field Generator, Targeting Drone, Gun Drone, etc? Because, otherwise, I have no idea what to use the guns with that wouldn't look just plain wrong as soon as you used one of your secondary powers.

EDIT: /Dark too, come to think of it. Color it to be a bit more gray, and it's smoke.
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
Good sirs, I trust you would not be inconvenienced if I were to construct a device with which to step through time in order that I may purchase this item immediately.
[edit] Having done so, I've returned to amend my original remarks. Capital work, lads.
Please try MA arc ID 351455, "Shard Stories: Scavenger's Hunt." Originally created for the Dr. Aeon contest, it explores the wild potential of one of the City's most concept-rich but content-poor settings: the Shadow Shard.
Day one purchase!
Oh, I just spotted a minor issue with it. The first character portrayed is wearing the coat from the Magic pack - does it also come with the Steampunk pack? If not, there's a smidgen of false advertising going on here.

The jacket shown in the trailer is in fact a new jacket that comes with the Steampunk Pack.

I am very upset and disappointed with this trailer... at the end it tells me to buy now and I'm like "Ok! I'll go buy it now!" But I can't! How cruel must you people be to flash all these new shinnies at me and tell me to give you money for it now, then when I try to give you money you tell me to wait until the 1st of the month! *Falls down on his knees and cries out to the heavens.* WHY GOD?!?! WHY!!!!!!
Zwill, BP, please pass along the word to the Creative Services Team that they did an absolutely fantastic job with this trailer. I very much hope to see more of this calibre in the future!

Very cool looking. New wings, jetpacks, BACKpacks? THis looks like a booster I will use many times over.
I think my favorite part was this:
Also: It would be nice if the clocks and pressure gauges were animated...

Looks great and I am happy to shell out for it for both accounts.
One more question occurred to me: will buying this pack unlock the same costume parts in the Mission Architect?

You know what? I think you're half right but missing the entire point. Costume and weapons pieces of substance outside of booster packs has slowed to almost nothing. I can't help but think that if I and so many others hadn't paid $10 for the wedding pack way back when, we'd be getting these things with issues instead of randomly released "booster packs". This steampack stuff was likely ready to go on the last issue release, if not sooner, and it's been held back as a cynical cash grab.
|
Its also possible that if you and everyone else didn't buy the booster packs, you just wouldn't be getting this at all. You seem to be under the impression that the art department sits in a room all by themselves and cranks stuff out at their whim, and then NCSoft decides what of that output they will give away with subscriptions, and what they will charge for in a booster pack. That's not how this works. Production and design decide collectively what an Issue will contain, and then the art department makes that. Production and design decide what a booster pack will contain, and then the art department makes that. They can certainly change their minds down the road, but most everything made for this game starts with a decision about what to create that justifies the work by specifying what its supposed to be a part of.
The Steampunk pack justifies the existence of the Steampunk costumes. The Steampunk pack did not steal the Steampunk costumes from Issue 20.
The bottom line is that by buying those packs, we contributed more money to NCSoft. If you believe NCSoft took that money and bought hookers and champagne, we got screwed. On the other hand, if you believe NCSoft put that money back into Paragon Studios in terms of hiring more staff and getting more resources, then the net result is that we the players ended up with more game. The notion that if we didn't spend as much money, we'd still get the exact same game but for less money is only true if you believe the Booster Pack revenue goes into the Paragon Studios Carnival Cruise fund or that some guy in Korea that looks like Chiun from the Remo Williams movie is getting rich off of us.
Take money away from NCSoft, and by extension Paragon Studios, and we get less game. That's inescapable. And when the devs produce less game, we all lose. Sure, no one wants to pay more, but that's the fundamental equation. More money equals more game. Less money equals less game. There's simply no way to calculate how much more game we have because of the revenue NCSoft has collected from Booster Packs, but its almost certainly substantial. Maybe they haven't spent as much time on the specific things you want as you would like. But that would probably still be true if they produced less game overall.
The question is: is it worth the trade. And the nice thing about booster packs is we can decide for ourselves individually. If we want them, we buy them. The customers that don't want them or can't afford them don't have to pay for them. They still indirectly benefit from the rest of us funding more game, and we directly get what we want and can afford to pay for.

(Please support the best webcomic about a cosmic universal realignment by impaired angelic interference resulting in identity crisis angst. Or I release the pigmy water thieves.)
You know, Im always asking for more costume pieces.
Also complaining for the lack of free costume pieces...
But when something is so AWESOME and nicely done, with such grade of detail, I dont have a problem to pay. I will be happy to pay for this pack.
I think is as awesome as Magic pack was when it was released. A new whole level of detail in all the costumes, faces, weapons and BACKPACKS!
There is only 1 thing I dislike... We cant buy it yet!
Congratulations to Cheryl (character artist) and whoever created the trailer.
Awesome stuff, one of the best boosters pack and trailers to date.
Yes. This game operated about one month shy of 5 years without them just fine, and the overhead costs to run the game have most likely gone down since then.

The Cyborg had the combat auras
The Magic had the CC emotes
The Science had the Super Tailor
The Martial Arts had Ninja Run
The Mutant had Glow Map costumes
All of the tech above, except the super tailor (which I believe should have been) has been added to the game in following issues.
From talk this pack has more new tech than any of the others. Path Auras, Back packs and the new faces at least. It's possible we could have had to wait a lot longer for this stuff if it wasn't funded by booster pack. Bear in mind that overheads HAVE gone up as there are more Devs working on the game now.
I wonder how will work Steampunk jump...
Just a jump with smoke, with a no backpack option?
A jumpjet like temp powers?
I dont know...
Movie tickets still cost me what they did ten years ago. Video games still cost me what they did ten years ago. Cable TV still costs me what it did ten years ago.

Also it hasn't happened all that often yet, but I've noticed a chunk of newer video games have had PC price points of $59.99. Most notably it's the games that are expected to sell well (the more 'big' games). It kind of makes me sad since the prices there have been stable for so long. I'd mention about console games making that shift, but I don't recall when that happened exactly, though I wouldn't be surprised if it happened with the shift from the PS to the PS2 or thereabouts.
Oh and by the way, the average salaries for programmers, graphic artists, QA, and writers have all gone SHARPLY down in the last 5 years.

I am thoroughly enjoying all the new additions to refreshing CoH for the modern player. One of the most encouraging, and basic fundamentals, is that the likes of Ultra Mode offer new machines and players a fresh and modern outlook of City Of' yet it is optional so as not to distance themself from original players still on Windows 98.
Keep this work coming, it is invigorating the game once more.

Yay! A booster with non-sword weapons! Now my little cold/dp steam powered robot can have appropriate pistols! Exclamation points!

It improves the look of the faces without changing the actual geometry.

All I see is a new face texture. They need some better images to even prove any "tech" is being applied there.
Some nice clothes, the "trailing aura" isn't shown very well but still interesting, and backpacks(at all) are a nice addition. Overall, however, I'm not sold.
First off, I liked the trailer, very well done
...
And if they're not just being facetious and the "new face tech" is some improvements to the character creator at large, why is something like that not included in base purchase price? ... |
I do agree with you on this NobleFox. Heck, I was one of the few that was against the Science booster packs "power." You know the one that can change you from a small male to a huge male or a female body type....yeah that one. I thought something like that should have been given to the public for 'free' (in a regular issue) and not something you pay for. It's the main reason I will never buy the Science pack...standing by my convictions and all that
I don't pay for costume pieces...I pay for powers (or badges)....so...all the steampunk looks great but it depends on the power.
But to be honest...I may just get this pack anyways....it feels weird paying for costume pieces but not 'weird' when I bought the MAC pack (tech pack?...the one with the mission teleporter power).
