As long as they stick to costume packs, they won't for me.

Not around here they don't, but indeed, they haven't gone up as much as they could either. The price for snacks and drinks has increased a whole lot on the other hand. Way more than inflation can account for.

True. But did you also notice that 10 years ago you had awesome cartboard boxes that were almost pieces of art, with thick manuals, maps and other goodies? Now it's small, cheap plastic boxes with a flimsy booklet (if you're lucky) or it's all digital (meaning they cut out the retailer and all the physical hassle, reducing their costs.)

Quote:
Cable TV still costs me what it did ten years ago.
Not around here. The monthly price hasn't increased as much, but to cost to get it installed in the first place went through the roof.

Quote:
Internet access costs me LESS than it did ten years ago and is infinitely faster.
Cheaper? hell no. The same price? Hmm, but only because their own relative costs have gone down compared to 10 years ago aswell. Faster, yes. Results of improvements in the technology, doesn't really factor in the operating costs.

Quote:
Televisions cost me what they did ten years ago.
Prices are being kept 'low' by advances in production technology (and low wages in the production countries). Doesn't compare.

It shouldn;t shock anyone the monthly fee for MMOs has remained the same or gone down.
It doesn't shock me. The same as it doesn't shock me that they're also looking for differen't revenue streams, just like every other business that kept the price on their core product from going up with inflation.

Anyway, awesome trailer for an awesome pack. First day purchase.

Happily buying it. The people who are complaining that we should get it for free... can look ugly?

Maybe we should get it free, but I don't care. Already have the order ready.

I'm only curious here but if the server list has been merged that must mean the database now recognises all CoH players, NA & EU, so surely EU players can log into NA test or am I mistaken.

I can't find how to install the NA test. The NC Launcher only has the EU test, which I obviously have installed. If there is a manual install, I'd *love* to know where it is...

It's possibly to do with the path of the EXE file. Much as our exe has EU in the file name. There must be the instructions somewhere.

Here is the link to the instructions:

Not totally correct. Praetoria, the engine upgrades, and the ENTIRE endgame system require an addon purchase. Don't buy GR, wave byebye to the Incarnate system and all the pretty shinies. Now, this is not unusual in MMOs, but let's not dive off the apologia high board.

I'm not QUITE as PO'd as Noble Fox about this, but, consider: We have a huge thread dedicated to 'like to sees' for costumes. Apparently we're doing the creative work for the art people, and then having it sold back to us. New back pieces? Asked for for years. Dresses? Asked for for years (and IIRC, it was originally said that, like full robes, would never happen due to clipping issues, as if those don't already exist.)

Given that sex and body changes are still only available via the Science booster, I'm not holding my breath that, if enough folks buy this one, the new facial upgrades won't be locked in the same way.

I then consider some of the apallingly boneheaded design choices made in the Animal and Mutant pack- female fur and Bioarmor boots ONLY with heels? Sure, that's natural looking. (at least they DID finally fix the fur one after endless playerbase screaming). I see no reason to believe there won't be similar issues with this booster. So, you're paying for stuff that looks cool that you then doscover that, due to a lack of thought, doesn't really work as you intended. Or, in some cases, for a single power, such as Beast run.

Add in still incomplete or shabby pre-existing sets (metal, anyone?), which will in all likelihood NEVER be upgraded or fixed.

It really is starting to feel like Cryptic want it both ways- a pay-to-play model PLUS an F2P megashop for anything but the bare bones. For those who don't mind that, cool, enjoy it in good health; for a long time I felt the same, and was guilty of feeding the milking machine. Now, it's starting to grate.

Have we gotten new stuff for free, in terms of systems and powers? Yes. But I fear for the future of the game with all the endless MTs.

Things to remember:
-Common sense ain't;
-Overkill is the only kill;
-If someone asks if you're a god, run away.

What have Cryptic got to do with anything? Paragon is run by NCSoft since years ago

That said, yeah, I would like to see old sets (and NPCs) get the love they really badly need six years on. I would also like to see more added outside of Packs.
But, ultimately, at least we are slowly getting what we've asked for.

Oh and while we're at it:

Movie tickets still cost me what they did ten years ago. Video games still cost me what they did ten years ago. Cable TV still costs me what it did ten years ago. Internet access costs me LESS than it did ten years ago and is infinitely faster. Televisions cost me what they did ten years ago. It shouldn;t shock anyone the monthly fee for MMOs has remained the same or gone down.

Oh and by the way, the average salaries for programmers, graphic artists, QA, and writers have all gone SHARPLY down in the last 5 years. Overhead is absolutely no excuse for them to be giving me less value for my $15/month than I was getting before they hit on the idea of charging us for what used to be included.
Hmmm, I don't buy all of those things often enough to be tracking the prices over that time scale but... Movie tickets have gone up in price, in fact when some less "newsy" sites present anecdotal evidence of inflation, movie tickets is usually one of the things they point to. The last video game I bought close to it's release date was, well, CoH and I came to that party 4 months late. Cable TV prices are going up, and in fact satellite TV companies make a point of highlighting that in all of their commercials. My internet has been bundled with my cable bill for the last 10 years, it may make up a smaller portion of that price, but that price has gone up. Haven't bought a new TV in the last 10 years, I can watch it on my computer monitor.

Salaries in general in most industries have gone down in the last two years or so. More and more students for the past 10 or so years have been looking for careers in this industry, so laws of supply and demand would seem to indicate that companies can get away with paying less for people in the fields you've indicated. Despite this, as Oliin pointed out, salaries in the field are generally increasing.

Its also possible that if you and everyone else didn't buy the booster packs, you just wouldn't be getting this at all. You seem to be under the impression that the art department sits in a room all by themselves and cranks stuff out at their whim, and then NCSoft decides what of that output they will give away with subscriptions, and what they will charge for in a booster pack. That's not how this works. Production and design decide collectively what an Issue will contain, and then the art department makes that. Production and design decide what a booster pack will contain, and then the art department makes that. They can certainly change their minds down the road, but most everything made for this game starts with a decision about what to create that justifies the work by specifying what its supposed to be a part of.

The Steampunk pack justifies the existence of the Steampunk costumes. The Steampunk pack did not steal the Steampunk costumes from Issue 20.

The bottom line is that by buying those packs, we contributed more money to NCSoft. If you believe NCSoft took that money and bought hookers and champagne, we got screwed. On the other hand, if you believe NCSoft put that money back into Paragon Studios in terms of hiring more staff and getting more resources, then the net result is that we the players ended up with more game. The notion that if we didn't spend as much money, we'd still get the exact same game but for less money is only true if you believe the Booster Pack revenue goes into the Paragon Studios Carnival Cruise fund or that some guy in Korea that looks like Chiun from the Remo Williams movie is getting rich off of us.

Take money away from NCSoft, and by extension Paragon Studios, and we get less game. That's inescapable. And when the devs produce less game, we all lose. Sure, no one wants to pay more, but that's the fundamental equation. More money equals more game. Less money equals less game. There's simply no way to calculate how much more game we have because of the revenue NCSoft has collected from Booster Packs, but its almost certainly substantial. Maybe they haven't spent as much time on the specific things you want as you would like. But that would probably still be true if they produced less game overall.

The question is: is it worth the trade. And the nice thing about booster packs is we can decide for ourselves individually. If we want them, we buy them. The customers that don't want them or can't afford them don't have to pay for them. They still indirectly benefit from the rest of us funding more game, and we directly get what we want and can afford to pay for.
This post wins. Bonus points for Remo Williams mention.

Fundamentally, this and all micro-transactions, indeed almost all business transactions in the world come down to "is it worth the trade." Some of the costume packs that they've done aren't worth me spending money on. I have no interest in the wedding pack, for example. I took a look at it again recently when it was announced at half-price. Even at half-price, I didn't think it was worth the trade. Some people like it, good for them. Their purchase pays for more advancements to the game, good for all of us. I'm willing to pay extra for things that I think are worth it, this upcoming pack is one of them. If you aren't willing to pay for it, fine, no one is making you. But don't complain that you aren't getting it.

Similarly, I don't really get into the Steam Punk genre, but some of the parts will work well on my robot/tech armor alts, some will work on my mad science alts, and the striped pants will work well on at least one of my Carnie themed alts.

Really. One of the few alts I have that would use a shoulder kitten is male, but that's female only. They really should make more pieces (including already existing pieces, not just new ones) available for more body types.

There's a known issue at the moment with allowing EU Characters to copy over to the Training Room. My sincere apologies and we do anticipate this being resolved at some point tomorrow.

Also, please note that there is no longer an EU Training Room, nor is there an NA Training Room...there is only Training Room.

Actually, the one thing I dislike (aside from the above) is that there doesn't seem to be an option to recolor the avatar's hair beneath one of the new Steampunk hats.

... But it was 1:00 AM and I was dozing off pretty hard while making a steampunk leprechaun on Test last night, so there may have been such an option that just wasn't apparent...

I don't know if they increased from the PS generation to the PS2 generation because I was quite young at the time, but as for the change from the PS2 to the PS3 generation, most games cost more now. Portable games cost $35 or higher now (unless the game in question totally sucks) as opposed to $30 like they were in the day of the game boy advance. PS3 and Xbox 360 games cost $60. Wii games still cost $50 like games did in the previous generation, but there are far fewer Wii games than PS3 and 360 ones. Not to mention that the Wii's technology isn't all that much better than the previous generation's, so it most likely costs about the same to make a Wii game........Anyways, to get to the topic at hand, the pack sounds awesome and I can already think of a few characters that could use parts from it. I agree that alternate animations for the /traps and /devices sets would be great. Maybe if we players mention it enough it will happen (hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge). I also love the travel power, finally I have a way to justify why my "natural" character is somehow able to travel in ways that aren't possible for normal humans.
Actually, the increase of CONSOLE videogame prices was at the 16bits -> 32bits change, mostly because the price were the same, but the cost of a CD (a layer of aluminium over a disc of plastic) was vastly lower than the cost of a cartridge (a bunch of circuits, transistors and -sometimes- flash memories).

I'll be buying this pack as soon as it's available. Nicely done! And this trailer was awesome. Just the right mix of steampunk atmosphere, humor, and teaser. I just about lost it when I saw "The Latest In Pantaloons Swapping Technology"!

Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.

so I love this pack my only real complaint about it is well really 2 :P
1) alot of the goggles that came with the science pack and GR cut in to the brim of the steam punk top hats
2) no sleavless options on the preatorian coats
other then that I love it and I want it sooooo much

Well i 'toyed' around with the peices a bit, and found that some of the 'Resistance' pieces from GR work well with the Steampunk bits (the Goggles for instance) Would love to buy this on the 1st when it comes out but with money tight as it is right now, i may have to wait a while.
