Please bring back the old warehouses!
I run my laptop on lowest settings at 320x200 during Lambda Sector and still get my FPS down to 2-3 into these big warehouse rooms. That computer is well above the recommended specs for City of Heroes, and even fits the recommended specs for Ultra Mode.
TWO frames per second isn't acceptable performance by any stretch of the imagination, and to have such performance in a timed mission part is adding insult to injury. Yes, the whole thing is thankfully easy enough to succeed once you know about it, but it's still a tedious affair as your biggest enemy isn't the level 54 Praetorians but your framerate. Lambda Sector probably can't be changed easily seeing as it's been designed with these warehouses, but I see no reasons the old missions and arcs have to suffer through this.
This isn't just one computer as well, I see that on pretty much any machine I got to check out CoH on, including gaming rigs built one month ago. The most powerful PCs keep a somewhat playable framerate, but all of them (again, that I've seen ; I see people claiming they don't have any trouble with these rooms, but then again I see plenty of people who can't tell the difference between 20 and 40 FPS) experience a sharp drop in performance there.
I wouldn't mind my FPS slowing down a little if the scene is really amazingly beautiful or unique. But to overload my system for a warehouse?! Do I really need to see so many boxes, crates and tools in such high detail? I've set my visual settings so that my FPS anywhere else in the game is at a decent level. This tileset plunges my FPS to a single digit.
That's because those boxes, crates and tools are... wait for it... INCARNATE!!!

Yes, I'm examining all those crates in all their meticulous detail every time I run face-first into them because I'm lagging so badly. I've also conducted a detailed inspection of the floor when I ran right into a War Walker's kneecaps. It's nice. Oooh, and you made sure to have the lights turned up so we can see everything, or go blind, I'm not sure which was the intent there.

Back when UM was in test, I was able to track down the particular things causing FPS hits through triangulation: Throw up the fps monitor and look around and try to pinpoint what was causing the FPS hits.
E.g., I found that looking down in some areas in a zone caused huge FPS hits. That's because the 'ground' was being transparent to the drawing engine and keeping track of the interior maps located under the zone. I also discovered the huge FPS hit in Cimerora were the torches in the teleport cave... looking at them even from a thousand yards away outside the cave caused a FPS hit. The Devs fixed those things.
So, it would help if you could find that one texture or object that's causing the FPS hit. Or, if it's a floor, wall, or ceiling that's 'transparent' to the draw engine and looking past it to the rest of the map is causing the lag.

I've often wondered why some parts of maps drop in frame rate when they aren't so terribly different in geometry density or texture usage from the room just before it.

...haven't we been saying all this about Arachnos Lab maps since, well.... forever? Luckily the Arachnos Lab is a lot prettier than a warehouse, so at least you get something fun to look at.
I'm mostly blueside these days, sure do miss that map. Lag and all.
Ok i'll be the first to shout out any love for ANY new tileset added to the game but myself and a lot of other people that i know and heard of have complained that the new warehouses just lag us to death.
No other tileset in the game does this and its now in almost every warehouse map that i have been in [at least since they've been added]. The lag in them has gotten so bad that i point blank refuse to do Lambda trials now also due to me being 100% useless in the third section. Now my computer isnt the best, nor is it the worst, I currently run the game at the highest settings PRE ultra mode and it really does annoy me that one map is ruining so many fun missions for myself. It wouldnt bother me so much if there was a chance that the other warehouse map would be used but either the RNG map decider hates me or every warehouse is a lag fest for me and others. So please . . . . . bring back those old warehouses where i was actually able to play! Edit: thought came to my just then, these maps tend to be more on actual arcs than radio/repeatable missions . . . . . which makes it more frustrating because i like arcs! |
As soon as the new tileset in the open areas are within view then it starts.

I have had this exact problem since those new rooms launched. There are only two of them, but they sure do make a lot of appearances.
I haven't even done any Incarnate Trials, so hearing that one of those rooms are in them just makes me put off doing them even longer.
When I see the room, my computer lags something awful, to the point that I am reminded of the old Hammi raids I took part in. It's fun to just walk in the room then turn around so I'm looking the way I came. Framerate is fine, then I turn back around and you can almost see the skipping frames jump out of my computer the more I turn.

I'd rather they fix the new ones. The new ones look 100x better.
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.
I AM NOT ALONE! This had been driving me crazy ever since I first encountered the problem in the Tin Mage TF during the fight with Director 11. I'm basically unable to play the portion of the trial that goes after the pacification grenades.
So, I add my voice to the choir, please, please fix this.

Dont get me wrong i agree, but take what im doing now live as a clear example.
In the final arc of crusader resistance where you go and capture Mr Fixadine and theres another warehouse which does look great but i simply cant play it.
I want to be able to enjoy them, i can superspeed around any other part of the game with ease [next to no lag in the ITF lag valley either] its just that one tileset which kills me. If there is anything i could do to help identify the problem then i'll do it right now . . . .
*curses at the warehouse once more for luck*

Praetorian Labs and Longbow Bases need to be looked at too. They are laggy as hell as well, although somewhat less than new warehouses.
I just can't believe they had an opportunity to add new assets to the game and chose to add a warehouse. It boggles the mind they thought we needed a new warehouse.

Incidentally, this only applies to Hero radios and special missions, as far as I can tell. If you run newspapers redside, you don't get them. Ever.
It's the one case where devs hating villains was actually good for the villains.
I too had problems. With the new (as in new geometry) big rooms in warehouses and praetorian labs in general. Then I upgraded my system and have not had such problems. At least to the point that I have not noticed them.
I suspect that the problem is high(er) resolution textures. They take up a lot of (video) memory and if swapping starts = doom.
Try to reduce "world texture quality" ?
If there are no low(er) rez versions of these textures then devs really should create them.
I do not suffer from altitis, I enjoy every character of it.
I run minimal and still get this FPS slagfest in the warehouse, on the trails and a few of the newer locations.
It hardly ever happens anywhere else.

I hate this room with a passion, although for me, I only have issues upon entering this area. I can look in from the hallway with no problem.

I wholeheartedly agree. The costs far outweigh the benefits in my opinion.
I would just like them to have the old warehouse maps for the sake of variety. Rather than eliminating the old ones, they should have brought in new ones to add to the ones we have.
The performance issues... I would like them to figure out. It seems to be an issue for a lot of different computers.

I have noticed that if you zoom out and look straight down, the fps doesn't take that bad of a hit and you can still see some stuff around you. Sucks when you're in a hallway with a low ceiling, but the big open rooms that are the biggest culprit have a high enough ceiling that lets you see around you well enough for now.
