***sadness***

The very first Doctor Who episode I watched as a child was a Tom Baker episode with Sarah Jane as companion.

She's been the epitome of a Doctor's Companion in a lot of ways. And with her coming back in the new series, showed the amazing growth in the character from plucky-girl-sidekick to someone who really changed from her time in the TARDIS. Showing how a sidekick can grow into a hero in their own right, and inspire and lead others.

Beyond the character, to all reports, Elisabeth Sladen was a wonderful person, too.

She will be missed.

This is one of those occasions where my first reaction is sheer disbelief - it feels like it can't be true, but sadly, it is.

Her performance as Sarah Jane Smith made that character the pre-eminent companion of the classic series. She could scream convincingly at rubber monsters and hold her own in witty banter with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. She was like Lois Lane and Hildy Johnson for the Time Lord.

Absolutely floored and stunned by this news

She's been such a fantastic character and actress that has brought so much enjoyment to people of all ages, our kids have always loved the Sarah Jane Adventures and she'll be greatly missed.

As her own character said, though.

I've watched every episode of Doctor Who since William Hartnell and Susan...so yeah I've seen them all! Sarah Jane was a big part of my deluge into the Doctor as she has traveled with more of them than anyone on its long run, and fully expected to see her appear with a few more. She will be missed.

I don't often feel much when I hear a celebrity dies, even ones I like.

But... I don't know... something about knowing that she is gone hit me harder than I expected.

She'll certainly be missed.

Wha...? No! Seriously this has knocked me for six. 63... it seems so young, and yet it isn't, not really. I can't say any more right now. It needs to sink in.

I don't know what to say other than this is really, really sad news for me. I gasped loud enough for my wife to come see what was wrong.

I feel like I should write something... deep... but I have no words.

I didn't want to believe it when I read it just no more than an hour or so ago. The first word out of my mouth when I read the headline courtesy of an email link was 'No.'

I was fond of Nick Courtney as the Brig...but I really did care for Lis Sladen. She was me, the scared little kid hiding from the horrible monsters, but then showing me the courage you could have if you weren't the Doctor and were his companion. And then I fell in love with her all over again with the Sarah Jane Adventures.

I guess the only good thing I can say is that she got to meet and work with just about all of the Doctors, and she made me feel truly connected to the Doctor.

Today is just an unutterably sad day for me. I wish the Doctor could've whisked her away somewhere to be saved...

Now the Brigadier was not surprising, but dear sweet Sarah Jane ... no.

Sarah Jane has held the top spot in my list of favorite companions since she first came on the scene. She struck the perfect chords between vulnerable and strong, between snarky and terrified, and between liking the Doctor and thinking he's a bit daft.

She was simply a very believable, very likable person; and while the writing helped, much of it was due to Sladen's performance. Her interactions with Tom Baker's Doctor often put me in mind of two childhood friends getting into trouble and picking on one another. It always made me smile.

I couldn't believe this last night and it's still not sinking in now.

Sarah Jane was my favourite companion and when she appeared in the newer episodes recently it made my day.

My thoughts go out to her family. I know what it's like to lose a mother at 60.

Another bright light goes out in the universe.

I was a boy living in Scotland when Tom Baker took over from Jon Pertwee, and she (and Brigadier) were like friends to me.

She will be missed deeply.

I'm not even a major follower of things Doctor Who, but this news surprised and saddened me. I still knew who she was, had seen her on the shows, and liked her character. Words for those who have passed are usually gracious, but it does sound like she was a fun person in real life, whose presence will be much missed by those who knew her personally.
