You don't need to unlock Alpha in order to participate in the raids. In fact, the raids give an alternate way of unlocking Alpha.

It's even listed in the post. PS; there is no EST right now. It's EDT.

Am I the only person wondering: "Why is there no pre-download?"

I have the PC and Mac client. I have repeatedly, since the March Producers Newsletter, have logged in via my Macintosh client and have received no pre-download.

I have gone back to the old PC client login, and have received no pre-download.

The NCSoft Launcher, which they want us to move to, has shown no sign of an update.

So, I am going to guess: Once the live servers come up we are going to be subject to a 20-90 minute download (depending on ISP speed) of the new content.

The pre-download was the best thing about new issues. Download the "pre" after quitting (like logout and going to sleep) and then when the Issue goes live you have a 20 to 100 "Megabyte" fix.

I fully expect an 800 MB to 1 GB download before I can even get into Issue 20.

Devs, prove me wrong.

Sometimes, I impress my boss. Sometimes, I impress myself. The rest of the time, I scare people. I can live with that.

Have the NCSoft launcher runing on your system while your at work (or running in the background while you do something else) and it will begin a trickle download when the patch is available

Sorry... not good enough, not damn good enough.

The *BEST* thing about the issue release, was the pre-download.

What about our Macintosh clients?

No.

This is a major change, one that should have been announced WAY before the issue goes live.

This is a "Cryptic" release.

I guess Jack is not dead.

I prefer the huge speed increase for downloads that come with the NCSoft launcher. I realize some people like waiting for a pre-downloader that takes forever even though I don't understand it.

There are people that enjoy enemas every day and people that enjoy being in the polar bear club but I probably will never understand that either.

Many people haven't yet gotten a chance to really see how fast the new launcher can suck down a big update. I think a lot of people will be put at ease when they see how fast it gets them all patched up and ready to play.

(Looks at his mac and the old updater)
(Something bubbles up from the inside, something like the feeling to hate the mac)
(Blinks and the feeling is replaced by the usual love and the need for a more permanent way to bond with the mac)

I would estimate that at best maybe 10% of the playerbase of this game plays it on Mac hardware. Is it really -that- hard to understand why any updates for Macs for this game will pretty much always be on a lower level priority? I'm not trying to dredge up the decades old "which machine is better" debate - I'm just stating an obvious fact. If 90% of the playerbase played on Macs then we be using a brand new Mac launcher today. It's just that simple. *shrugs*

Sorry this doesn't work for you, but it's the way it is. I'm sure if the NCsoft Launcher supported pre downloads then they would have made it do it. They probably figured they didn't need it since the NCsoft Launcher does do trickle downloads and unless you go and change the setting the Launcher remains running in the background and starts downloading an update, and will update the game on it's own (I noticed the beta server install on my system is now updated yet I didn't tell it too). If you really don't want to have to wait for the update to download you can allways use a service like Logmein.com to remote into your computer from work and start the update your self.

and by the way Cryptic started the pre-downloads with i1

Of course he's not, he just stayed behind when Cryptic sold the property to NCSoft and is now working on different and unrelated projects.

I wasn't here for issues 0-3 but I am pretty sure I remember the predownload thing being a new development with issue... something. 8? 9?

Good work, Zwill, and here's hoping everything goes off without a hitch and we see a similar treatment done to issue 21.

Edit: As for the Mac Client, let's put it into prospective. I was a Mac man long before I bought a PC for CoH and other games. I remember back in the dying days of OS 9 waiting and waiting for the most basic of ports of top tier PC games. In fact, I'm still waiting for that port of Blood which never ever came.

I don't want to turn this into a "You Kids Today Don't Know How Good You Have It," but not having a pre-download for an issue isn't the end of the world for Mac Gaming.
