Overly strict name restrictions?

So, basically, I'm calling your post horse####.

(and oddly on topic, I had to edit and censor this post myself)
A number of years ago, my family used to volunteer at Fort Christmas, a small historical park on the East side of Orlando. One of the stories some of the people out there used to tell (and I don't know if it is true), is that a "Florida Cracker" was a man who used a bullwhip to drive cattle. The good ones could also use the whip to kill rattlesnakes. They were called "crackers" because the the crack from the whip. The term had a negative connotation because the cattle herders were usually crude men who were not very good at the social graces.

Fort Christmas has an annual festival that they call a "Cracker Christmas." Not to be confused with a Christmas Cracker.

Sometimes the filters limit words that that are a little too remote to be considered offensive. I agree that filtering out "cracker" is a bit too much. Sometime recently, I tried to use a word meaning nonsense, "gobbledegook." but the last four letters got filtered.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

I see some people are confusing two different words that sound similar.

A "cracker" is a tasty snack.

A "Crackuh" is a reference to people naturally lacking melanin.

The words sound similar but they are different. If you take the time to listen to the people that use the derogatory term you will realize they aren't pronouncing the "er" sound but instead are pronouncing the "uh" sound.

The reason that "crackuh" isn't very effective as an insult is because the people being insulted mistakenly assume that they are being called a "cracker" and assume it's a compliment because almost everyone likes Keebler's Town House Crackers.

Well, we've already got "an hero"

Off the top of my head, I've got coon (perjorative for a black person, as well as abbreviation for racoon).

Also "nip", a light bite, which can mean a Japanese person, or "*****", which is a broken link in maille or other weak spot in armor, and can mean a Chinese person.

Boobies are birds, as are tits. A **** is a male chicken, as well as several other types of birds. A ***** is a female dog, and a ******* is an illegitimate son. An *** is a donkey. And I'm willing to bet a large amount of this paragraph is going to be blanked out.

It seems ridiculous to me that we complain about how things like txtspk are ruining the language (OMG LOL R U SRS?), but we can remove dozens of common words with innocent meanings from our lexicon because one rarely used definition might offend someone.

I've lived in the heart of Alabama my entire 31 years.

Only time I've ever heard the word Crackuh used as a slur is when I'm watching tv...

The slur most often used down here for whites would be the N word replaced with a W.

It's not that the rarely used definition might offend someone. The truth is that there are far too many people whose existence seems to revolve around looking for things to be offended over, and far too many immature jacktards that get a kick out of antagonising them. It's hard for the rest of us to soar like eagles when we are surrounded by these turkeys.

A Queen is a breeding female ant or bee, as well as a breeding female feline... or, y'know, a ruling monarch.

I wanted to give several of my thugs on a MM Italian names. I am of Sicilian descent and thought it was cool. Vinny and Tony were okay but I was not allowed to use Guido. It surprised me for a moment, but of course I get it. Guido, before it became an insult, was one of the more common Italian names. In Italy it still is. I have two uncles named Guido.

While I understand the reasoning I still think it sucks.

And yet, Guido is the name of an NPC, redside...

Nip always makes me think of the UK English phrase 'nip out for a ***' (go outside quickly to smoke a cigarette), which is famous for bewildering Americans when they hear it for the first time.

With a game with a global player base, the profanity filter can get confusing.

ETA: removed by the filter, of course, but I'm sure everyone knows what I mean, and if you don't, Google is your friend.

It's been this way since before we even had the internet. In the early days of BBS'ing, when we dialed direct into computers with our 1200 bps modems, I was on a board where you couldn't say "chardonnay" or "saltwater taffy" because they had 'dirty words' embedded.

1 - Pets have a different name filter.

2 - Even if it has been added to the Player name filter, if you already had it a rename is not automatically forced.

When the built-in name filter was added, the decision of what words to filter out, besides the obvious swear word ones, was based purely on feedback and petitions already received by support from PLAYERS complaining about certain words and the way they were used in other players' names.

If you want anyone to blame for all this, it's your fellow players for using potentially innocent words in offensive ways and your fellow players for being offended enough at the words to petition them for it.

In the USA at least, it's a couple of generations of people who seem to think that they have a god given right not to be insulted, shocked or surprised. Racism is one thing, never right and always ignorant. But you don't have government protection from being angered or annoyed by someone who you don't agree with. It's called growing a thick skin or staying home in bed. That goes double for the internet.

tl;dr- Pearl clutchers can go **** themselves.

I totally had the same reaction, and I think that Matt and Trey would have completely and fully acheived their best case goal if that were to become widespread.

NTM, did anyone else think that 'The Coon' story was one of the best examples of a 'Going Rogue' story Ever?!? I have barely heard it mentioned on the CoX forums...

I don't know what those are, but they sound like something about which I should be at least mildly insulted, shocked or surprised.

In my opinion, if a name gets petitioned the devs should look at that name and decide whether to ban it and not the components of the name. A prime example would be a name that contained any color that can be used to describe a skin tone (black, white, red, brown, yellow...etc). These words are absolutely harmless but I dare anyone to address someone at their job by saying the color of their skin before their name. I'll bet they'll be playing CoH a lot more, at least until the unemployment runs out.

Also, a name may have an alternate meaning but be completely appropriate for a character. For example, a while back I made a plant/plant defender who was clinically insane and I wanted to name her Wacky Weed. I didn't even think about the drug reference, I just thought it would have fit her perfectly. Maybe if I put the two words together, I would have been able to use it. Then I'm sure someone would have complained about it and it would have gotten banned because the dev wouldn't have investigated the name, read the character's bio (which would have explained everything) but just gotten rid of it to make one person happy.
