100MB Hotfix? Really?

First of all, thank you Paragon devs for getting that Hotfix on the table so quickly. I mentioned to some friends that if I was the person managing that rollout, I'd have made the call to do a full rollback if there wasn't a patch ready to go in the next 24 hours. I know that some of you were likely up all night busting *** on that one, and I appreciate it.

Now all that said... a 100mb patch? Was there really that much new code shunted. An altered graphics or textures? Any zone geometries?

Why on earth was a 100mb patch necessary for, as far as I can tell, a fix that should have been all executable code?

Just a guess, but I'm assuming they changed some code from the previous patch and decided to just replace the entire thing to be safe. Again, that is a guess as I have no knowledge of how something like that should work.

Also, judging by some subtle name changes of some costume parts, I believe they snuck in the Animal Booster bits as well.

I have a sneaking suspicion it was some kind of graphical corruption which was causing crashes, and they ended up having to recompile large amounts of graphical or effects files. Remember when many textures in the game got that "faceted" look on them where you could see the polygons? The solution to that was to essentially repack the entire textures.

Then again, I STILL prefer the notion that someone sat down and wrote 100MBs worth of software as a solution to the crashing problem

Those were in the original patch, which was only 25MB AFAIK.

Given how they say that everything is all baked together... wouldn't a change to the pets power coding wise (assuming that was the cause of the bug) require that the entire pet power, including graphics be re-baked and thus give us the 100mb hot fix size?

Yeah, the "psychedelic" effect. I've got a few screenies of that. Wouldn't mind it being gone.

You can't really tell anything about how much code was changed just by going by how large the Hotfix patch was. They could have theoretically changed only one line of code, recompiled the baseline, and generated a 100mb "patch" just because that one line of code was buried in that larger 100mb library/pigg file.

My guess, based on how quickly they were able to crank out this Hotfix, is that whatever the problem was didn't actually require that many code changes. It certainly required the expertise of the experienced Devs to know WHAT needed to be changed, but ultimately the AMOUNT of code that was fixed probably wasn't very much at all.

Either way it ran pretty well for me and the people I teamed with last night so I'd say they managed to do what needed to be done.

You all are lucky you aren't on dial-up. I'll be lucky to play by the weekend.

And no, I can't get broadband where I live.

I don't see what is so odd about a 100meg hotfix.

I think it was a question, not a whine. But ya know, people really will make up hidden meanings in anything.

Really? Anyone should be able to get something like WildBlue (satellite broadband), no matter how rural.

We have internet policies now? I thought it was mostly just a chaotic free-for-all.

Those looks like what my computer was going through when it was getting a little too warm and my graphics card was on its last leg.

It wasn't too long after I started seeing those kinds of graphics my card puked its guts and I had to get a new one.

Satellite internet has major latency issues and download/upload caps. It is also significantly expensive compared to any DSL or cable service of comparable speed.

Expensive as in $49.99 a month for 512kbps, a download cap of 7GB per 30 day period and a 18 month contract.

It honestly tends to be cheaper and somewhat more cost effective to just get a wireless card from a cellphone company.

It's not heat. I have a case with two 18 cm and two 9 cm fans. And it's kept dust free. Bi-weekly cleanings. This is graphic corruption I've seen on and off through several different video cards. Regardless, a new system is in the cards come tax refund time.

I love shopping for computer parts. It doesn't happen often enough.

I loved getting parts too. I remember during the late 80's and 90's my dad had a computer rival from the father of one of my friends. Every time he'd get a new computer part for himself or his son, my dad would get a new part for himself or me.

Of course that was when computer stuff was just hitting into high gear. Upgrading from disks to a CD, then a 2x CD, then 4x CD, and on and on and on. Just about every part was being replaced every other month and I got part of it, either new parts of dad's obsolete stuff.

Now I upgrade once a year, if that. I wish I had the money to get stuff more often.

Heh. Reminds me of when my graphics card was dying.

Of all the people who I would have thought would have broadband, it would be the guy living at the north pole. I guess the Family Guy holiday special was way off mark
