I'm thankful for the awesome community! So thankful actually, that I buy 30 day game-time cards and PM codes to folks that I really appreciate posting on here. They really make the community as a whole better and deserve a little reward!

City of Heroes has given unto me not only one of my most favorite MMORPG's, but also a unique tool in creating my ideas and dreams and watching them do things. It has been pretty much a 'go-to' for when I have an idea for a character (Not just in City of Heroes, I do a lot of creative writing) or when i'm bored and wish to experiment.

I am thankful that CoH has a dev team that really listens to the community and does their best to satiate us, even when we give the appearance of a pack of hungry hounds. I can firmly say that CoH is unique for me in that the opinion of the customer really does have an impact on the choices made in the game, rather than 'This is what you're getting and you'll dang well like it!' some other games offer.

In short, thank deities above for CoH (I'd be very bored otherwise)

I was doing some playthroughs of City of Heroes. Now they will serve as memories of a better time ...

In the spirit of Friday Appreciation Day... I offer this for your amusement. It's not one of mine, but it's one of the ones that inspired me to make vids. And it's appropriate to the thread!

On a personal note, I have something extraordinary to be thankful for today. Only a handful of people know this, but since September, I have been suffering from a severely herniated disc in my back. Upon further testing, it was discovered that I also had a large bone spur pushing on the nerve root from the other side as well, and that the herniated disc was severely degenerated.

Wednesday, I had a three-hour surgery to correct the situation. My L5-S1 disc was removed and the bones fused, and the bone spur was removed. Yesterday, the physical therapist got me out of the bed, and for the first time in over four and a half months, I was able to walk without pain shooting out into my right hip and down my leg. Also, my right foot had regained sensation from a dull numbness I've felt in it for around the past three weeks.

Today, I was discharged from the hospital with three bottles of medication, a few pieces of equipment to help me during recovery, and a regimen of exercises I need to be doing to help the surgery site recover to 100% capacity.

The doctor told me after the surgery that the nerve root was "beet red; it was angry." (Nerves are supposed to be more-or-less white.) But today, the prognosis is good, and he expects a very favorable recovery.

I know all of this isn't game-related, except that I'll probably be out of the City for a couple of weeks during the remainder of my initial recovery, and I'll be only marginally involved in working on Titan Network/Paragon Wiki stuff (which is fine, since the brunt of our projects are being driven by some other developers at the moment).

Still, I just thought I'd share what I'm extremely appreciative for this Friday evening. I have an awesome family and awesome friends who help look out for me and take care of me when I needed it most. I have what must be the smartest doctor in the world working what might as well be called a medical miracle on my back to get me walking again. I just spent two and a half days at a hospital with an awesome competent and unbelievably nice staff.

Because of all of this, I hope to be able to stay in the City for quite a while longer!

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

As for me?

I'm thankful for friends on Protector being willing to share some deep and personal burdens with me, so that I would not be crushed under them. This is truly a community, not a game.

I love the way I can choose to either mindlessly grind on my high-HP toons when I'm tired or grab my more tactical characters if I want a bit of a mental challenge.

I'm also quite pleased that City of Heroes has resulted in me having the opportunity to make some contributions that have a chance at being appreciated by thousands of people. (The next version of Mids' is coming with partial drag-and-drop support, yo'! :P )

So it triggered an idea of Friday Appreciation Day and what it is about City of Heroes I’m grateful for. So, being a positive sort of woman, and trying to be more pro-active about letting people know what I admire, appreciate or value about them as part of my New Year’s Resolution, I thought I’d start this thread.

So this #FAD could go the way of Bass Mouth Billy and Chia Pets or it could pick up steam and give you guys an opportunity to tell each other something that will make you guys feel – well – appreciated. It could be that you met your wife playing City of Heroes, or you love your Supergroup, or you were having a really bad day and read some freaking hysterical NPC dialogue that turned it around for you, or you love to fly and CoH let you do it for the first time. Truly, ideas and impressions are up to you guys.

I only have a few requests and I hope that you honour them.

• Keep it positive and be sincere
• Don’t hijack this thread to hop on a soap box about a non-related issue that picks you

That’s about it, actually. I like to keep things simple!

So I’m going to start us off, and you’ll notice that my appreciations aren’t just about the game, but about all different aspects of City of Heroes from NCsoft to coworkers to the players.

*cracks knuckles*

Okay, here I go. Don’t feel like you have to compete with me, as we all know, I’m a talker! One or two would probably suffice! But, since I instigated this craziness, I’m going to dig deep into several years of memories.

I appreciate / am thankful for / like the fact that / love / find enjoyment in:

• Being hired on this project in the first place; as a part-time office manager I just wanted to be part of something special, even if it was to file papers or clean out waste bins
• Having a job that allows me to take care of my family
• Having the opportunity to do something creative and exciting
• Knowing that what I do in the game makes people smile, even if it’s just to read some silly dialogue or find an easter egg
• The friendships I’ve made over the last (nearly) 9 years of developing City of Heroes
• The support from Real World Hero who promoted not only the MS Walk I participated in, but the Susan G. Komen 3 Days for the Cure walk as well (and, of course, everyone who donated so that I could participate!)
• The gifts that players have sent me over the years because they’re so kind (amazingly gorgeous rock formations, a scarf, brownies, Ascendant O’s, letters, chocolate, cookies (even Italian cookies!), gift baskets, Valentines (even if they were – technically – just to War Witch the character, not the dev), etc.
• Meet and Greets and Conventions where I’ve had the blessing to meet you guys, so I could encounter the real person behind the avatar or forum name
• The first time I ever loaded the game (being so used to fantasy) and standing in a real city and then, oh my gosh, FLYING
• The pranks we’ve played on each other over the years, even the early ones, where I’ve been punked several times from Oreo toothpaste cookies, electro-shock pens, Tootsie Roll shenanigans, and Bertie Bot barf-flavored jelly beans
• The wonderful company events the work has provided over the years from parties to celebrations to contests – just to keep us employees happy (my other jobs never did that!)
• Double monitors – where else would I get to have TWO (I never thought I needed two massive monitors until I actually got them)
• Special friends I’ve met in the game who have touched my heart – they know who they are (you are sweet and courageous and wonderful, each of you)
• Seeing City of Heroes on the shelves for the first time and every box since!
• Rikti Beta where I got to attack all our beta testers as a Rikti! That was super fun. They took it all in stride!
• Spending time with players in game with them never knowing who I am
• Laughing out loud as I read the Ascendant dialogue with Saul on the other end of the line – sheer brilliance
• The wonderful videos that players have put together using City of Heroes as a backdrop (Samuraiko – I bow to your skillz, too!)
• The stories about how City of Heroes has helped people through hard times

Ok, I could see myself going on for a few more pages here, so I’m going to cut myself off. But you get the idea!

Have fun! It’s Friday Appreciation Day! (By the way, this works outside of the game, too, so tell your neighbor, your co-worker, your mailman just what you appreciate about them. You'll make their day.)

A lot of people don't know this, but in 2008, shortly after I began playing CoH, I hit an extremely rough patch in my life. I was incredibly depressed, and actually considered suicide.

One night, I decided to log into City of Heroes for what would have been the very last time, and while passing through Atlas Park, just jumping around and looking at things, I came across a player character sitting on the ground in one of the tinier parks.

I stopped to talk to him and find out what was up, and ended up forging one of the deepest friendships of my life.

The PC I met that night was Steampunk Charlie, and since then, he has helped me become a much happier, healthier, and more whole person. I was proud to be his sidekick, and now I am proud to be his partner at KJSR.net.

City of Heroes taught me that when the world is burning, you don't just stand by and watch, you grab a fire extinguisher and do whatever you can to stop it-even if it's not much at all. Sign the petition to keep City of Heroes alive HERE.

I've been meaning to hop on this thread for a while and since it is a Friday, I'll start with the absolute most major blessing, even if it's not City related - I'm thankful my father's cancer free!

He'd already been going through a very rough time- heart surgery and multiple surgeries on his legs- when he got the bad news (Throat cancer). I'm amazed at how well he did throughout treatment- radiation and chemical therapy- which lasted for weeks. We only found out recently he's got no traces of it left. (Though he's still got a lot of recovering to do, and a leg surgery to go.)

Despite the hardships, well, I'm sure you can imagine what a relief the news is to us.

Oh.. and I had a holiday job, which's nice. I'm back out job hunting, but at least I got to enjoy buying gifts for myself and family. Especially my nephews. (Both of which enjoy City of Heroes every so often.)

As for City of Heroes, a friend at the time told me all about the open beta, which fell close to my birthday all those years ago. I tried it, loved it, and while I haven't been here nonstop, I've been here for most of the ride!

I'm thankful for the friends I've made here, one of which told me about Second Life which became another major source of entertainment and new friends for me. Some of them have become my very best online friends!

I'm thankful after probably a year of being annoyed by it, they finally updated the vets rewards so I wasn't short changed. (I complained once via email only to be told "No it can't possibly be wrong." Glad that didn't stick since I quit a few months over it.)

I'm thankful to be in such a creative community. It's part of the inspiration for the written roleplay game I run - which used to be in my signature. (For which I seriously need to find a few new members for soon!) Edit Oops.. it's still in it.. nevermind.

Oh, and for mission architect, which I really want to explore someday when I find a team willing to enjoy it with me! (Which I do every so often, which is nice..)

Even with the occasional annoyance I have with the game, I'm glad I renewed one last time! (But that one last time is for 14 months so.. maybe I'll end up staying another 14 months.. hmm)

Still hate the visit Winscott mission- make it dropable, have it give actual exp or remove it altogether. PS- Down knows who you are.

I'm grateful for:

All the work from Zloth, Leandro, Balshor, Scuzzbopper, and everyone who has contributed to the playerbase's communal knowledge on demofiles, demo editing, recording, models, etc, plus come up with snazzy tools to really help us take vid-making to a new level. *hugs* You guys are the BEST.

Ashcraft, Battlerock_X, Gibbain, Neutra, Sentai Sage, Vertical Studios (aka Aralcox), and every player whose vids pay tribute to this game we love. (And a nod to Dark Ether as well for trying to maintain that evergrowing list!)

Wow, I meant to update this thread at 7 a.m. this morning and I'm just now sitting down to do it. Whirlwind!

How is everyone's Friday? Wonderful, I hope! You all deserve some great Fridays and I love that you take the time to write on here and let each other know how they, through the game, make your life better. That is awesome. (I wonder if I can trademark that word. Or does that belong to Barney Stinson?)

Maybe I should bring back the word 'choice'. As in, "That was so choice!" (Or is that a Canadianism? Wait, Ferris Beuller said it. It's valid.) It's close to awesome and no one uses it anymore. Verily? Most excellent?

Ok, without additional unnecessary preamble, which I did anyway, here's my list for today:

  • Lunch time walks with Doc Delilah - two girls laughing, whining (oh, the heat! man it's cold!), supporting each other and, well, walking - about 4 miles actually
  • Any CoH SWAG I can get my hands on - these are my reminders when I'm old and gray that I had a freaking awesome - er...choice - job!
  • The day-to-day interactions with my team and the studio - there are some really really amazing people behind those red names (and those that don't have red names) that you can't even begin to reveal in a simple post, a Con, or a meet n' greet. What a blessing these people are!
  • The first time anyone (I think it was the Community Team, now that I think about it) asked me to, gasp!, AUTOGRAPH something. I thought I was a freaking rock star! (And then I went home and my dog had thrown up on the rug, the kids were fighting, and I burnt dinner so I disabused myself of that notion pretty darn quick.)
Well that's it for this week. Thanks for being the absolute best community in the entire MMO space. Yes, I'm biased, I don't care.
