Discussion: The 12 days of Coralax!
Sorry, it's obvious that in a rush to get something like this giveaway out, very little forethought was used. Mayhap it's time the developers should create a focus group of players (those of us who pay to play), and run these ideas through by the group. While the giveaway and the limited amount of costumes are admirable, the concept of how you disperse them is nothing short of a bad business decision. A lottery system while people are actually playing (read in-between-the-lines) would have been a much better idea. But why ask us...?
The End is Near
Another suggestion (fr the forum giveaways at least):
1) Pick a random number between 1 and 1000 each day.
2) Each day at noon PST start a thread in the Forum Games section inviting people to guess the number.
3) At noon the next day lock the thread and award a code via to the X number of people closest to that number.
4) Start a new thread for that day.
I guess the obvious drawback to this is that people could sell the codes on eBay, but to me that is a lesser evil than the "feeding frenzy" and ill will the current system creates. Also, someone would have to keep track of who won previously and disqualify them from entering again and again.

Nice, new batch of codes put on Facebook. I refresh a couple seconds apart, and the new codes appear. I snag one, apply it.........and the connection times out, and now the site is down for "scheduled" maintenance.
Scheduled. Heh.
Geez.
Edit, now the site is back up, and the code I used is now "invalid". Thanks NC/PS. Thanks for wasting my time.
Q. Just wondering Posi, where are the new dance emotes we were told would come with GR?
A. Positron: Whoops, my bad.
1387 badges, and counting

And, people, there are 10 more days of chances. If you don't get it at first, try again. They're freebies.
People ask why they don't just do X, Y or Z method for giving them out, instead of what they're doing with the social engines. The answer? They're finding out which one nets them the fastest response, so they know where to put their energies for 2011. It also drums up activity on the social sites. This benefits NCSoft as much as it benefits you.

So basically they get not traffic from those folks.
I would say they need another channel to give these away in, one which is more available to more folks. I know this seemed like the year of the facebook and twitter, but many companies STILL BAN access to these sites outright.

Then we'll put the kids in a circle, toss the gifts in the center and let them scramble for them. Oh, and just to make it even better, we'll have volunteers physically restrain a few of the kids so they have no chance of getting a present whatsoever!
I'm sure some of the kids will be disappointed and a few will probably cry, but to those kids I will say, "These presents are free! You are not entitled to one, so chill the hell out."
I just know it's going to put everyone in the Christmas spirit, because after all that's what the holidays are all about - peace on Earth, goodwill to men, and giving gifts to a few fast and/or lucky people while leaving everyone else empty handed.

Perhaps you should be focusing on work when you're at work anyhow
You know, you have a point. Next week my company is hosting a Christmas party for 20 four year olds from a local day nursery. Taking Paragon Studios' lead, I suggested that to make the day more fun, instead of buying 20 presents, we only buy ten.

Many people acting like 4-year-olds
"fair" for everyone? This is for people who visit the forums, visit their twitter and facebook sites.
As has been said a bunch of times... they do things in-game as well.
Some cool ideas have been suggested, but I don't know the feasibility of adding in some way to award codes randomly or by clicking on random doors.
neat ideas... but a world of difference to implement than what they are doing here.

Stealing money from companies by not working while you're being paid isn't very christmas-like either. Eh? Eh?

And, again except for the people who are NOT ALLOWED to log into twitter or facebook, because their company bans it.

You expect everyone to just get a code for Christmas without a competition, as that what your over the top example suggests.
Most Paragon contests I have even less chance, as I'm not allowed to enter. That really is not a chance, unlike this one which is does provide you a chance.
I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.
Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.
So sad to be ending ):
You're really comparing adults not getting a good enough chance at winning a luck based lottery with this? Wow. Just wow.

Let me use another example - two local organizations are each giving away 20 TVs as part of a drug-awareness campaign. Organization A sets up a booth and hands out raffle tickets for eight hours. At the end of the eight hours, they draw 20 raffle tickets and give the TVs to the winners. Organization B tells people that at some random time of the day, they are going to throw twenty metal tokens into a ring and the first 20 people to get into the ring and grab a token will win a TV.
Only 40 people are going to win TVs, but of the people who lost, who do you think are going to be more bitter - the people who picked up a slip of paper at their leisure, or the people who were made to "fight" for the tokens?
So no, I don't expect them to give everyone a code for Christmas, though I can see how you would think I did. I just wish that they would use a less "gladitorial" method of awarding them.

Has anyone actually managed to see any of these blocks of codes here in the NA forums? According to the original announcement there was supposed to be blocks of codes posted every business day starting last Wednesday on EACH of the three avenues (twitter, facebook, and CoH Forums). Yet I can not find a single one of the three posts on these forums. Maybe I read it wrong, but I think it was pretty clearly stated. Anyways, has anyone even seen a post here in the forums with these codes?
G-Man, they are posting them in a stickied thread in the COH General Discussion forum.

In this day and age, everyone owns a cellphone. Twitter and Facebook can send messages to said cellphone.
*Gasp* Astounding revelation, isn't it?
And don't give me the "What if he/she doesn't own a cellphone?" arguement. If he/she is paying for CoH and can't afford a cellphone, then he/she has other priorities to worry about and should probably cancel his/her subscription to save money.

Neither of my teenage children, nor my spouse has a cell phone either and for the same reasons. There are plenty of people willing to throw money away for the apparent ease of owning one of those things, but my family is not among them. There are a lot of people out here that do not own cell phones for the same reasons or even different reasons, to assume that "If he/she is paying for CoH and can't afford a cell phone, then he/she has other priorities to worry about and should probably cancel his/her subscription to save money." is just short sighted and immature.
The truly humorous thing about this "give away" is that instead of using it as a possible Christmas gift to all the players of this game, it is instead geared only toward those people who for some reason are drawn to social networking sites. You can't even legitimately claim to be using it as a defacto "Advertising" scheme since only people who "subscribe" to the sites for the game would get the info and only people who play the game are going to "friend" them. In all I find this to be ANOTHER disappointing "Give Away/Contest" from NC Soft/Paragon Studios.

This contest is put out during business hours that companies operate. The bulk of the player base is at work during these hours. Most companies will block the avenues that they are releasing these codes upon. Yes, you can use your cell phone, but i'm not going to be hunching over my phone scrambling to update to see their new tweets or whatever facebook calls it. Plus, if you have a cell phone, look at the speeds you get on data..horrendous when compared to those that are on the computer.
Technology is limiting the accessibility of these codes. This is a problem. However, if you are in the game, you KNOW a player has access to certain functions. Use the game to deliver the method of these codes.
I just read about this contest and followed the link to Facebook, no code there, then I followed the link to Twitter and there was a message posted 11 minutes before. I saw a code and entered it at my account. I got the costume! I do have a job, but I do not work at night. I do not have a Twitter or Facebook account, so I didn't have to log in to those sites, it was in plain sight. I was just checking out the forums before I went to play. I guess I was just lucky?
They already do. They very recently give costume codes, the Party booster pack and the Origins booster pack. NCsoft also, on occasion, will donate a costume code as a prize during an in-game pageant, player auction, or costume contest. This is just an extra.
