How do you pronounce your main character's name?
It's funny to think of a main character when you suffer from altitis, but for me it's always been my first character, created low these many years ago:
Mac Tíre
It means "wolf" in Gaelic, and no, it's not pronounced "mack tire." The ****** is that I can't get the accent over the "i" so in-game I have it as "Mac T'ire," which I'm sure makes him sound more like a truck wheel than ever.
I've forgotten the exact way to say it, but it's more along the lines of "mock tear-e," though I'm sure I'm butchering it somehow. Can't seem to get an audio of that exact word, the InterWebs have failed me.
I've often wondered how players pronounce their characters names. There are some that are easy to pronounce if your native tongue is English but for other languages it presents an awesome exercise.
My main's name is Murcielago which is Spanish for bat. Its said Mor-see-al-a-go |
Easy peasy as my nephew says, I'm a gearhead that would have been no problem!
------->"Sic Semper Tyrannis"<-------
I pronounce it exactly as it looks: Ad-e-on with a hard e. I suspect it should actually be pronounced Ad-ae-on with a much softer e that's almost an a but I prefer the hard e.
Arbegla = Arb-eg-la or atlest thats how i say it all the time. Most people just shorten it to Arby, which of course creates a lot of roast beef jokes..

If you want a real tongue-twister, my warshade:
Iníon iomláin gealaí (Granted, without the accent marks). Inion IN-ee-yon YOM-lin Gyah-LIE (With a similar diction to the way you'd say the words Indian Tomlin July)
It's essentially Irish/Gaelic for Daughter of Darkness (Technically "Daughter of the Fullness of the Moon)
The Mighty Pi (Thuh My-tee Pie) He likes Pi!
The only one people might have trouble with is Tomoe Chiyome: (Toh-moh-yay-Chee-yoh-may). And while you're working that out, I'll be halfway through my AS animation :P
Is it time for the dance of joy yet?
Verdandy is pronounced the way it's spelled. Her civvie last name is a little difficult. Deepeneaux is pronounced (deep-en-noe). No stresses on any syllable. Not easy, since English makes you want to stick the stress on the first syllable.

I feel sorry for any native english speaker who can't pronounce "Brooklyn Bridge" or "Manhattan Bridge", my two level 50 mains on virtue now.
But my other level 50 scrapper Anlek'Toh, might be a challenge.
It's Ahn-lek'Toe
A (Golden Gate) Bridge Too Far- arc 299315
Crazy NIMBY's, Railroad robber barons, and kickboxing Engineers, Oh My! Go back in time and join the fight to save a San Francisco icon!
There's an Irish descended heroine my lovely and delicate Irish flower of a cousin made who's name I cannot use on CoH. Her name is pronounced "Shaw-thayd".
Anyway, since I first came up with "Balorn" (actually, it was created from Everquest's "generate name" button way back when EQ was new), I've thought of it as "BAY-lorn". However, it seems most people seem to say "bul-ORN" when they see it. I never bother correcting people on it, though; I don't consider it worth the trouble.
Tech support IRL, CLR/DRU/MED/WHM/PRI/DEF. Hmm, I sense a pattern...

Chaos Commander: KAY-oss Ka-man-derr
People call me Demo for short, but I've heard people in Vent say it with a long 'e'. It's Deh-mo with an 'eh'.
@Demobot
Also on Steam
I pronounce mine "Which-one-do-I-want-to-play-now" most times.
Go Altitis. |
But for the stunning chica in my avatar, Ravenna: Rah-VEHN-nah. Most of my heroes' names are easy since they end in -shrike so (in the sig, Diamond, Flame, and Swift)....
One character that no one even tries to pronounce (no idea why) is Aridania. Derr, AH-REE-DAHN-YA.

Yeah, I hear that. My family still calls me 'Danny'. I'm 38 years old. I'm Dan, not Danny... ugh...

I've got a couple characters with odd names:
Anscillect: ANN-sill-ekt
Sally Lee Brown: Jeff

While he was in high school and working part time, his boss called our house and asked to talk to "Dan." My mom, who answered the phone, replied "You must have the wrong number," and hung up.

I only have a few characters with non-English names...
Liora Kate - LEE-or-a... and the everyday name Kate.
Qiao Huang - I don't exactly know Chinese, but I ran it past a friend of mine who studies it and used a very handy pronunciation guide online. The best approximation I can come up with is simply 'Chi-ow Hong.'
Kelenar - No longer exists, but hey. KEL-en-ar. Easy!
Kaelinia - Kay-LIN-i-a
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
Mine is pretty easy: Claws and Effect. It actually is pronounced pretty much exactly how it's spelled.

I had the Samuel right. I always thought the Tow was pronounced like what you do when you need to move a broken down car. Like you'd say "toe"
|
You had both right, as they're pronounced like you'd pronounce the name Samuel and the word Tow exactly as you described it. I just tried being cheeky for a bit
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.
