Talk About Inpolite...
You were both wrong. I hate to tell you this, but what you did probably would be considered spamming by most people. I mean, think about it. If everyone sent invites to their respective supergroups to all heroes < 10, every time someone created a new hero, they'd be inundated with tells.
Also, he also has a point in calling out how you're recruiting. Why did you want him in your supergroup? Typically, people have supergroups to hang out and run missions and such with their friends. You have no idea who this guy is, you just invited him because he's a warm body. If he were broadcasting something like, "Hey, does anyone know a good SG I could join?" then yeah, toss him an invite. If you had run some missions with him, thought he was cool, and asked him if he wanted to join, that's no problem. But just sending random people you don't know tells asking? That does strike me as kind of spammy.
Having said all of that, yeah, he was kind of jerkish about it. I don't see any reason he couldn't have just said, "No thanks." Of course, having said that, you were as much or more of a jerk than he was. Once it was clear that he wasn't interested and you were irritating him, why did you have to escalate instead of just leaving him alone and going your merry way? Why did you tell him to "**** off"? You do realize that you broke the terms of service in transmitting obscene language to a total stranger, assuming you didn't literally type four asterisks, right? And that you've now come to the forums and openly admitted it? And that if the community reps are on top of this, it would be a trivial matter to look through the game chat logs to verify, and then temp- or even perma-ban you?
Oh, and by the way, you need to edit your post, because you're essentially calling someone out on the forums, and that's a huge no-no. It will, at best, get your post deleted, and at worst, could get you a bit of a "time-out" to ponder why you shouldn't do that.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
If I'm reading this correctly, you sent a blind tell to someone you didn't know, and had never played with, asking them to join your SG? Then got angry when the player reacted poorly to your behavior and began cursing at him?
Sorry to tell you, but the other player isn't the rude one here...
How long has sending a private message at players leisure been considered 'spamming' Most replies I get even if not looking for SG are thankful that I send a tell. Never angry that they are already in a SG.

[Tell] -->Puros 2.0: Need a SG? [Tell] Puros 2.0: Thanks but I'm already a member of a super swell SG, good luck getting yours set up. Also if you need any help getting your alts into your SG for the extra prestige I'll roll a level 1 up and help you out. |
In a couple months either they're playing anther game, or they've developed altitis and have given up on putting the energy into a base and SG.
Is it spam if I send one e-mail to thousand people I don't know? Yes. Recruiting in this manner is a terrible, terrible idea. I expect this wasn't the first time and won't be the last time you encounter some displeasure with your recruiting method.
For a lot of people, they define "spam" the same as for email that they receive - a pointless communication they didn't ask for and do not want. You sent a blind SG invite to someone you've never met. That is rude, and shows a great lack of respect for other players. At the very least, if the person getting such an invite knows how SGs and Prestige works, they're going to suspect that you just want them to pad out your SG and get the full bonus for the first 15 characters to join. You then tried to weasel out of the "spam" accusation by arguing about the definition. No, you didn't send them fifty messages all in a row so you weren't "spamming" them. You still sent them spam.
There are two basic kinds of SGs that I know of offhand. The first is for a group of people who like to spend time together to have an easy way to keep in touch, and to give them something to work towards as a group. (SGs get their own chat channel, and a fully functional base can be quite useful.) The second is for a solo player to have access to extra storage, and private crafting and teleporter access, and perhaps a way to share IOs with their own alts.
The first kind of SG is rarely any good if they just invite everyone that wanders by. Yeah, there's lots of people, but most of them don't know each other, many of won't like each other, and there's usually a pretty decent chance of getting a jerk or outright griefer. (Back before SuperLeader was added, I know of at least one player who tried to start a SG this way, and ended up getting kicked from his own SG when the wrong person somehow got promoted to Leader rank.)
For the second kind, solo SGs, inviting other players is almost always just to pad the SG's prestige earning. I suppose it's possible for a group of solo-oriented players to come to an agreement and basically set up a time-share Bat Cave. But it's more likely that the other players will realize that they're just there to help pay for someone else's base, and then they'll get angry and quit.

I see what your saying. I just don't see "Nah, I'm good" or a simple "No reply" being to bad. I guess I may be the only one not angered when asked a question. Maybe I'm "Cool Calm Collective Mike" when it comes to people asking me things such as SG invites. I definitely see being constantly hounded on stuff like that being tedious, but I sent one single message. That's all one tiny little message. You have to be a real 'Hot Head' for a little thing such as that to really set you off in my opinion.

As I previously said in my last post I see how this could be counted as 'spamming'
|
But what you're not seeing here is, you're not the only one who does this. There are others out there doing pretty much the same thing. After a while, all those 'single' instances blend together and become... say it with me... SPAM. And it no longer matters to the 'spammee', so to speak, that this was the first and only time YOU, personally, did it.
That's probably where the guy was coming from.

I deal with such things simply. If I'm on a char that's already in an SG, the person sending the tell just gets put on ignore with no reply at all. If they can't be bothered to check if I'm in an SG, I can't be bothered to reply.
If I'm on a free char, my response will depend on my mood, but it's usually just a simple "No thanks".
Sorry OP. You WERE being rude. You should have just dropped it when it was clear he wasn't interested.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
If it was just you, just the once, no, it wouldn't be 'spamming'.

Yeah I got caught up in the moment, yes I was also rude,one thing I'm glad to hear though is something besides "An informative SG tell is spam, I caste the out!" Although not to critique your methods the person asking you to join when your already in a SG could be out of range to check for that sort of thing, like myself.

My usual response to a random SG invite tell, is a polite "No thanks", then using player notes to one-star the sender, and if possible making note of what SG they're spamming for..
|
Well... In the evenings, i'm usually on my main level 50, in Galaxy City, roleplaying. How many level 50's do you know that are looking for an SG? I get a surprisingly large number of invites from people... And most have plenty of Vet badges, so really should know better!

Look at this conversation:
[Tell] -->: Need a SG?
[Tell] : isn't there an SG tag under my name?
[Tell] -->: I sent u a message b4 i got here
[Tell] : wow, that was an useless act.
[Tell] -->: Don't have to be a d!ck I send messages to lvls 1-10 about the SG
[Tell] : LOL, spamming for a SG members...Sorry, bub, I guess some have to do what the have to do.
[Tell] -->: Spamming? Sending messages is 'spamming' most people i see like being asked b4 they get invited
[Tell] : sure, there a lots of 14y/o tha daddy is paying their account that would love the invite
[Tell] : ok, ok, I'll leave it be. good luck, bub
[Tell] -->: **** off bro
[Tell] : boy, if you had taken a few minutes to see if I had an SG before spamming you would be all upset now, would you?buggar off, bub
[Tell] -->: And were back to spamming, Let me ask you did i send you like 10 messages to join my SG? NO. I sent you one. That is not spamming - that is a general question
I admit I got a bit out of hand with my responses but I just hate sarcastic jerks
Oh and also, who here calls asking someone to join your SG threw a tell 'Spamming'?
