Marvel's Chaos War

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this comic event yet. Maybe it's 'comic event fatigue'. Maybe because it hasn't been hyped as much as the events of the last few years. But the Chaos War event has something that none of those other events had: Greg Pak as the primary writer. Which means it's totally awesome.

Marvel's Chaos War has a lot of resemblance to DC's Blackest Night: A universe-spanning threat, the dead coming back to life, and some hints that a few of the long-dead heroes and villains will be resurrected permanently once the event is over. (I'm calling Yellowjacket's return, right now.)

But while Blackest Night was mostly technological, Chaos War is magic. The magical equivalent of Darkseid wants to annihilate the universe. The first thing he does is take out Nightmare, lord of dreams. (Yes, Marvel's Nightmare is now gone.) Then he takes out all the underworlds -- Hel's, Pluto's, all of them. Then he goes after the material plane.

So who's going to stop this threat? That's where the awesomeness begins.

A team has been assembled called the 'God Squad', including Hercules (enhanced), Amadeus Cho (the token mortal), Thor, Venus, Sersi the Eternal, the Silver Surfer and Galactus. (Yes, Galactus is ON THE TEAM.)

But it's Pak's writing that's the real draw here. What other comic used sound effects like 'PATRICIDE!", or has dialog like, "Fatalities: Zero. Conformity with the laws of Physics: Zero." Pak's an incredible writer and funny as hell. It's because of him that this is the first multi-title event that I'm really stoked for.

Anyone else reading Chaos War yet?

Life is funny. Death is funnier. Mass slaughter can be hilarious.

Maybe they will screw with Peter some more and bring Uncle Ben and Ben Reilly back to life.

No, not reading it, and really not interested in it either. I have never heard of the writer, so I can't comment, but I hope you enjoy it.

I thought Marvel already ripped off Blackest Night with all that vampire garbage? o.O

Not the vampire garbage; you're thinking of Necrosha, where Selene used the techno virus to resurrect a bunch of dead X-Men characters and attack their former friends. The vampires showed up later.

Personally, I'm loving Marvel's "reverse Blackest Night" in the cosmic realm. The universe is currently being invaded by a parallel one where Death was killed and nothing else can die.

I think most people accuse Necrosha as being a Blackest Night ripoff.

Cause.... y'know.... dead characters coming back to life hardly EVER happens in comics.

Oh wait, they come back evil?

Well THAT'S even MORE rare!

Yes, the Thanos Imperative has been a fun read so far. I have a hunch as to how its going to end but we shall see.

While some dead characters may get resurrected at the end, Captain Mar-Vell won't be one of them. Yes he's "coming back" as part of the Dead Avengers once the afterlife/hereafter is wrecked but he won't stay when it is over and things are restored.

threads like this remind me why I've been ignoring mainstream superhero comics for the last decade or so.

I wasn't interested until this part. That is one heck of an intriguing team up.

As an Alpha Flight fan, Ive been eagerly anticipating this event. I only hope it turns out for the better and AF is back

I'll probably have a look at the trades. Pak's been a little hit-or-miss for me; I LOVED Planet Hulk and his Hercules stuff with Fred Van Lente was pretty good, but his War Machine really disappointed me. This is following up on the awesome Secret Invasion tie-in in Hercules though, so that speaks pretty well of it.

Jean Grey will be back. I will start reading X-Men again. (Granted i just stopped reading it once the Hope storyline ended. WTH cares about x-men vs. vampires?!?!?)

Meh. I don't see it holding a candle to Blackest Night.

Oddly enough, it reminds me of why I'm STILL reading them.

Yeah I am picking up Chaos War...cause I love Thor comics, which drew me in. Reading through Thor right now shows a lot of what is happening so it started to peak my interest. Although I am only taking in Chaos War, Thor, and Dead Avengers not the entire thing (like Nechrosha ug). Although I think I will be on crossover hiatus once this is done, and trying to get more Zenescope coming to me.

Jean Grey will not be back. They already have a new Phoenix in the X-verse called Hope. They will not bring her back also since the last three x-overs before Vampires revolved around her.

"Cause in the end you got Hope!"

This is why I bailed after Issue 1 of Blackest Night. That story was just stupid and badly written. I honestly do not get the love for it at all.

I realize that the underlying Lantern idea is that it's super duper science, but it's just about as magic as the Force is.

a couple of times, but hey, what's one more shot at the well? it can't be any worse than Red Hulk or more disappointing than ... most of Marvel's event books have been lately.

Darkseid is a god... That is magic.
The power source of Oan tech is a magical entity. It's technically Magitech.

Greg Pak was writer for the World War Hulk event. Which, in my opinion wasn't all that awesome. Planet Hulk was, yes, but not so much World War Hulk.

It's probably because anything that has Sentry is automatically knocked down a peg or seven.

Darkseid doesn't use magic, often at least, nor is he inherently magical. The New Gods are all Gods of Science. That's what makes them distinct from the old gods, such as the Olympians. He's just a really powerful alien, ultimately, with some great technology on his side.

As far as this event goes, I hadn't even heard of it. I do like the line up, except Amadeus Cho because of his forceful mary sue tendencies, and am somewhat interested in your description...but who is the main antagonist that you were comparing to Darkseid? Somebody they're hinting at, or did you not want to spoil the already revealed name?

Mikaboshi, from the Japanese pantheon. He's gotten some really good on-again, off-again development in the pages of Hercules and the old Ares mini (not the Dark Reign one, though I heard that was quite good). From what I've read this is the culmination of all that.
