While I'm sympathetic to your complaint, right now CoH isn't a game that wants events to have any actual impact the world. It caters to a very wide range of playstyles and levels of commitment, as well as desired results. There is a small but significant portion of the playerbase that ignores the art and theme trappings of the game completely, while another exclusively roleplays and tries to ignore gameworld events that break their immersion. You'll never be able to please both.

Even relatively minor effects of failing the event -- a -10% Regen/Recovery debuff applied to all characters in the zone for the next thirty minutes, say -- would be met with cries of anguish. Game events cannot have consequences, only rewards.

(Although there are hints that the post-50 Incarnate events may actually have long-term effects. We'll have to wait and see. My money is on anything significant being killed in closed beta.)

Yes you fail. No, there will be no opt out toggle -- that would be a coding nightmare for little gain.

Current MoTFs have to watch out for level-appropriate foes in the streets (esp. snipers) and the Zombie/Rikti Events that happen all year round.

You have an event channel to warn you if a zone has an event running. Just be careful.

I got the halloween tip as drop within 10 minutes to trick or treating in costume. Got the same results as everyone else, no reward dialog at the end etc. Nothing new to add.

Do have a question though - is there a second halloween tip mission? Should I be getting another halloween tip drop at some point or is it once only? (sans the repeat bug)

thanks

I believe Posi said that there are 5 badges with running the Halloween tip mission. Then a sixth one for getting the other 5. A lot like the snap tooth save baby new year stuff. Just not sure about the number.

Hmm okay.

I ran the halloween tip mission (Recover the Malleus Mundi), then ran it a second time. It's no longer in my tips panel, but it's still in my mission tab. It says "return to contact" but there is no way to do this...

Perhaps this is why I'm not getting another halloween tip to drop?

I copied over one of my characters yesterday to test the event without any problem.

have not been on test yet but have a few questions,

1. are all monster types spawning correctly on ToTing? a few years ago they were broke ,and did not get fixed til next year.

2. is there any limit on the number of event tip missons per day per toon?

I still can't get the test server to work - I've been trying for the past 24 hours, but all it does it download 2.5 MB, then stop.
I haven't used it since testing I17, because the GR beta was on a special server - should I just delete it and try downloading everything again?

ok went to test server, got my first costume in about 5 mins, turned it on and about 5 mins later got the halloween tip.

went to misson entered(lvl50 ds/therm MM hero,+0 +0 )

entered the first room fought a few ,found the glowie ,clicked it and it said more time, searched some more after reveling the map, defeated some more mobes, found a second glowie. said more time,)

then with 2 mins left on the clock,(no pun) the clockwork appeared, after fighting 5 or so waves, went through the portal into the last area, cleard a bit ,then fought the main bad guy, defeated him, got no badge reward., left misson, clicked on the tip, it disappeared, no badges
gave me the mission again.
this time i cliced on 4 glowies, ran straight to bad guy, fought him again no badges, left misson and was out in PI again. this happened about 5:20 pm EST on test server

i had a framerate slow down inthe one torch light room, even with a i7 cpu and a nvidia 470 gpu

OK, used my Ring Mistress costume, went ToTing in Grandville, and quickly got the 'WeenTip.

The door was up in The Tangle. >.< Ran the mission, futz'd with the thingers, and then found the Room 'O Lag.

The cause is the torches on the long skinny poles used there. That's an old time Base Raid Trick. You'd fill part of the base with nothing but those, and lure the raiders into that section. While they were dealing with the major lag, the rest of your guys would off them via snipes/blasts. Remove those, and that room should be good to go.

Defeted the EB, got Mission Complete, and as expected, got no Reward Table. I then faced 4 or so waves of Praetorian Clockwork ambushes, and exited the mission. Opened my Contacts tab, and clicked the 'WeenTip to "talk" to it. It offered me the mission a second time.

I don't think that's WAI...

Ran the mission a second time, and skipped futzing with the devices. Ran right to the end, and defeated the EB. Since it didn't take me too long, there was plenty of time before the PC showed up, so I left the mission.

After that, I went ToTing, and didn't get any more tips. I need to check, but I think momentary_grace has it right: Since the tip vanished from my window as soon as I selected to run the mission that second time, I can't "talk" to it to finish things up, so another 'WeenTip won't drop.

Also: I found that Costume Salvage will drop from foes defeated when you get a Trick. Did that happen last year, or is it new? (I'm guessing it's not new, and my brainy-parts just don't remember it happening last year... )

The only good news is that DA will only be run (heavily) for 10 days. 10 days that Numina (and other TFs with hunts) will be unfun to run and hoping that there isn't an event going on when you have a hunt mission from a regular contact. (Actually I normally just autocomplete most hunts since I hate them)

I am however interested in the trick or treat tips missions.

Whispered Rumor
Tip

Investigate...

Hushed voices speak of the Malleus Mundi and its connection to the Circle of Thorns

Investigate the rumors...

The Malleus Mundi is an ancient text, one of the oldest bound books known to still be in existance. It is a magical focal point as well as a book of some of the most powerful spells ever devised. Whispers speak of its powers being able to bind gods, destroy moons, and re-write the fabric of reality itself.

Rumors now speak of the Circle of Thorns, the magical villain organization from Primal Earth, having their hands on the book, or at least a version of the book. They have never been able to hold onto the Malleus Mundi for any length of time. Someone always tracks them down and takes it from them. Some might say that the book wants to cause strife and conflict, and it uses its own powers to make it so.

If true, the Circle of Thorns can not possibly keep the book secured. You have a chance to recover it.The Circle have once again tried to secure the book from interlopers, this time by hiding it in a dimension different than their native one. Praetoria. If the Malleus Mundi wants to it can turn any door into a portal to the Circle's lair on Praetoria, giving you access. From then on, you are on your own.

Recover the Malleus Mundi

With resignation you accept the task at hand. One question burns your mind though: what exactly will YOU do with the Malleus Mundi once you recover it?

Text corrections and suggestions (see bolded red text above):

existance > existence

re-write > rewrite

recover it.The Circle > recover it. The Circle

native one. Praetoria. > native one: Praetoria.

wants to it can > wants to, it can

One question burns your mind though: > One question burns in your mind, though:

Confusion: The Malleus Mundi wants to be found and stolen. It can create a portal for you to get there. So... how do we actually know which door to use? I suggest something like this:

If the Malleus Mundi wants to, it can turn any door into a portal to the Circle's lair on Praetoria, giving you access. And after hearing that whisper, sure enough, you get a vision of a nearby door. It seems the Malleus Mundi is the source of the whispers and visions and is showing you the way. Once you get there, though, you are on your own.

Peregrine Island

Tip objective: Recover the Malleus Mundi

Mission entrance text: Magical energy resonates around you. The Malleus Mundi did want you here, otherwise that door would have just been a door. Far off in the distance you hear the electronic chatter and clanking of Praetorian Clockwork making their way down here as well.

Objective: Recover the Malleus Mundi
Defeat Libri Vermis, Clockwork arrival time 4:39

[NPC] Guide: We should prepare for the worst.
[NPC] Guide: This odd device is letting out some sort of beeping...
[NPC] Guide: Seriously?
[NPC] Behemoth: They said Praeotria was shades of gray. This looks awfully blue to me.
[NPC] Behemoth: My spells do seem to be taking longer to cast.
[NPC] Behemoth: Does the magic seem harder to access here?
[NPC] Guide: Gimme that thorn blade. You're too dumb to wield it.
[NPC] Ice Thorn Caster: So if we're gonna be here a while, are you going to pick a side? Loyalist or Resistance?
[NPC] Ice Thorn Caster: They said not to drink that stuff!
[NPC] Ice Thorn Caster: I had some water here the other day. Made me feel really good.
[NPC] Libri Vermis: I will protect the Malleus Mundi with my life.
[NPC] Libri Vermis: Interlopers! The power of this book shall be mine and mine alone!
[NPC] Cleaner: ++SYS.REQ; SEC_RTY.BRE_ACH(TNL) = True; For TGT in TNL; FOE.LST.Append(TGT)

[NPC] Sweeper: ++SYS.REQ; SEC_RTY.BRE_ACH(TNL) = True; For TGT in TNL; FOE.LST.Append(TGT)

System: You have defeated Libri Vermis and recovered the (a?) Malleus Mundi.
The Malleus Mundi is under your guard, for now.

Hmmmm. Got a tip mission after 'forevah', ran it successfully, waited for clockwork to show up, fought them, got bored, exited. No badge, no indication of working the alignment bar, but, the mission was still there immediately (do the mobs IN the tip drop tips that could be halloween?), so not sure if the mission didnt end correctly, or I (somehow) got a tip drop for the same mission, in the mission (it was a different location).
Completed the second, nothing (no badge, reward screens, etc).

So, since I NOW have the book that can rewrite reality, can I rewrite reality to give myself a badge? I want the 'I have power to rewrite the universe, but all I did was get this stupid badge' badge.

In this very thread Positron confirms the lack of badge is a known bug.

If you intend to use the Malleus Mundi, you do know you have to read it first, right?

I would like to hear from anyone who had done the halloween tip mission, finished, trick or treated some more. and gotten a second halloween tip mission - the next one, not the same one.

Has anyone gotten any halloween tip mission other than the first one?

This YearÂ’s Halloween Event Includes... a brand new Halloween Tip Mission. These events aren't limited to Primal Earth either, but can also be found in Praetoria!... Specifically we are most interested in:...
  • Are players receiving the Tip Mission...
I believe the use of the singular was on purpose. There is only one Halloween Tip Mission. When the reward menu is working correctly, you'll have to do the same mission four times to earn all the rewards.

There's another thread that I started on the Training Room board where I got help turning my Beta install into a test install. You may want to check it out as it worked for me.

I deleted the beta folder once GR went live - so I think I'll just have to delete the bugged test folder and redownload everything.

Doing a little more testing, it seems that credit is not being earned towards the Zombie Apocalypse badges (at least the ones for defeating minions and lieutenants). Soling the apocalypse, tried fighting zombies in Grandville and Cap, and after going through several waves of zombies in both locales, the character (level 50 villain, never side-switched) does not have a single point of credit towards either.

Tip Mission Feedback:

I picked up the Tip mission itself using RWZ as my usual trick or treat stomping ground. The Tip dropped relatively quickly which is always nice when you are only able to get in short gameplay stints most days.

Usual issues noted for the ambushes turning up early and there being no reward table. I have to ask though, from a design perspective, whats with the clockwork ambushes? I didn't really see or understand why we're fighting the clockwork, who I can only imagine are there to repair the changes made using the Malleus Mundi. So rather than fight the invading thorns, they decide to beat down on player characters?

Anyways, apart from that (confusing) issue, it was quite a good mission, although given the tools that are availiable, I would have expected to see more "Halloween" enemy groups.

The lighting changes made during the map for those that have them enabled are great, nice use of the flame torches but again I felt the map customisations could have more of a "blend" to them from one theme to another.

I spent 15 minutes testing this in peregrine.

My very first door click, I got the tip mission. Love the jack-o-lantern art for the tip contact by the way.

Got into mission no problem. The dialogue for the mission was cool, having the malleus mundi in play again is fun, and fitting for Holloween.

I loved the mission map. Having the CoT merging parts of Orenbaga with parts of the Praetorian Underground was actually pretty cool, nice etc. No real issues here, it all worked and made it feel unique.

Beat the mission no problem, Last boss wasn't too tough, not too easy.

No reward table, though others have pointed this out, so nothing new.

Then trick or treated a few times after I beat the mission.

Got temporary costumes.

Got Costume Salvage.

Got Bad guys...

As far as I can tell, everything outside the reward table is working nicely. Glad to see the new tip mission system getting used outside of just switching alignments. Can't wait til it hits live!
