I have an urge for music. Heavy, heavy music. Classic albums from the greatest bands of the late 80's, 90's and the early 2000's.

I'm looking to order some great albums from Amazon.co.uk, and am looking for suggestions. Currently on the list I have:

Soundgarden - Superunknown
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
Queen Adreena - Taxidermy.

So please, help a young woman in her time of need by providing her the means to experience some of the greatest albums of the time frame and genres, and I can always look things up on Youtube to get an interest.

Metallica- Kill 'em All
Metallica- Ride the Lightning
Metallica- Master of Puppets
Metallica- ...and Justice for All
Those four are must haves in any heavy collection.

Anthrax- Among the Living
Megadeth- Peace Sells, but who's buying
Motorhead- Ace of Spades
Pantera- Cowboys from Hell (I prefer this to Vulgar...)

White Zombie - La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1

White Zombie - Astro Creep 2000

Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe

I'm a huge White Zombie fan, seen them live 3 times and Rob twice. Nothing quite equals the industrial metal. Except maybe...

Tool - All four are worth it. This band is the pink floyd of metal!

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral

That should be a good start!

Maestro Mavius - Infinity
Capt. Biohazrd - PCSAR
Talsor Tech - Talsorian Guard

Right, this month's purchase is:

Tool - AEnima
Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell.
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Soundgarden - Superunknown

That's £30 of CDs, which is more than enough for me for the moment to work through, though I'm still taking suggestions. I've got a few Metallica tracks dotted around from various purchases before, but definitely looking into the four suggested, and will be keeping an eye on here for more ideas in the future. I just hope that some other people get some good music picks out of here too.

OPINION TIME:

Anything after the "Black Album" in my opinion is not Metallica and even that album is them transitioning into what we have today (Selloutica). Those four albums are (to me) simply put, "must haves" in anyones metal collection. If you just want to sample some tracks from these albums I'd suggest:

Whiplash, Seek and Destroy, Am I Evil [Kill em All]
Battery, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes [Master of Puppets]
For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Creeping Death [Ride the Lightning]
Blackened, ...and Justice for All, The Shortest Straw, The Frayed Ends of Sanity [...and Justice for All]
Bonus: Last Caress/Green Hell [Garage Days]

Oh and some great suggestions so far from the others.

Well, for me, it doesn't get much heavier than early Black Sabbath, but that would mean going all the way back to the 70s. Specifically, the Paranoid and Master of Reality albums, although Volume 4 has its moments.

From the 90s - heh - all the crazy stuff I've listened to over the years, it took a song by Garbage to finally blow the woofers in my old Pioneer speakers: The Trick is to Keep Breathing from Garbage 2.0. It happened when they went into the chorus and the bass line took that plunge waaaaay dowwwwn. Now THAT was heavy.

Always willing to go a little further back, I just didn't want to overwhelm myself with choices. So yeah, will definitely look into Black Sabbath, some Iron Maiden too.

I'd love to hear your opinion on Death Magnetic. I appreciate Metallica music in all forms, but I do agree with you that they never were quite as good as they were then they did their early stuff.

Okay, back to the topic at hand. Most of the obvious choices have already been said. So some of these may not land exactly on target.

-You may want to check out Temple of The Dog. this was Cornells band before he moved to Soundgarden.
-Rage Against the Machine, The Battle of Los Angeles is a great album.
-Collective Soul. Where the River Flows, Shine, and Heavy are great songs.
-The Prodigy's album The Fat of the Land, if you don't mind a little techno with your heavyness.
-Clutch has some great songs too. One Eyed Dollar, Immortal, Mob Goes Wild, Carefule with that Mic, Wishbone.
-Stone Temple Pilots. I don't really consider them Heavy, but they're good none the less.
-If you don't mind going into the later dates, I highly recommend anything by Coheed and Cambria. Welcome Home is still one of my all time favorite songs.

I grew up listening to the music my brothers had, along with my folks. I was introduced to dance and trance from an early age. I do love a bit of classic Prodigy.

Much love for Coheed and Cambria. Lots of love for 'The Lying Lies and Dirty Secrets of Miss Erica Court.'

My musical tastes range from many genres and countries and many time periods, so I'm always willing to give something a listen. I just happen to be on a feeling for rock/metal/grunge/thrash/nu metal lately.

Oh wow......did someone invoke the Rock God in me

Ok, seriously now, I know I plug the station any chance I can get, that's only natural, I own and run the station with my good lady wife, Rose, but I had to reply to this one.

When it comes to Rock music, we have some AWESOME DJ's who speicalise in just the sort of thing you are after.

As well as my own Rock Zone on a Saturday night 10-12pm, where I play, well, whatever rock and metal nonsense come to me at any times, we also have 3 others who play Rock.

Headstrong is on every Tuesday at 7pm, but he's a young 'un and tends to play more modern stuff, like Disturbed, Trapt and the like, perhaps not exactly what you are after.

What you really need is to tune in on a Thursday night, as we have 2 DJ's you might love. At 10pm we have Escalus who tends towards the Queen/ELO style of rock, but plays plenty of other cracking rock stuff.

For the true connoisseur though, you need to listen to Jay, Thursday night at 8pm. His knowledge is second to none and constantly leaves me amazed at the depth of information he has about the music he loves! A lot of the stuff been mentioned so far in this thread has been played by him and discussed as well. If you want to know about the albums, he's like the Wikipedia of Rock, but without the fanboy inaccuracies

Again, apologies for coming across like a plug for the station, but I really think you'll love Jay's set, he reaslly deserves the mantle of Rock King.........I am the Rock God though :P

Great choices there, but no love for the Black Album by Metallica? I know a lot of people class it as the album they sold out, but there's still some awesome stuff on there!

Avoid the Tin Bath......sorry, the St. Anger album though, dreadful album, but their latest album is a big improvement at least.

If you're looking for some thrash, along with the others might I suggest a little band that sadly never made it all that big, Testament. One of the big stars in Bay Area thrash. Here is one of their newer songs, and The Formation of Damnation is a fine album, but they've been around since the 80s and have quite a few choices. Personally my favorite song by them is Low. There are several compilation albums from them too.

Otherwise I'd also suggest some of Soundgarden's older stuff too, specifically Badmotorfinger. I really really like Slaves and Bulldozers off of it. They have a compilation too, called A-Sides I think, that would be well worth a purchase if you're into them and don't have the originals. Only thing it's really missing is their cover of Into the Void, easily my favorite Black Sabbath song, Soundgarden REALLY does it justice.

Gonna have to disagree slightly with the Maden there, Death Magnetic is thoroughly kickass. The Judas Kiss is just awesome, as is All Nightmare Long. Though I do agree that the Black Album...lacked something, to be nice. And nobody likes St Anger, lol. Of course my favorite Metallica song ever is Phantom Lord.

Anything by the Upper Crust, one of the BEST BANDS EVER.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20t4gBf_1d4s

Lord Bendover, the Duc D'istortion, Count Basie, and Jackie Kickassis, four men dressed like noblemen whose songs are all about the hardships of being the idle rich. The music and lyrics are tongue in cheek double entendre stuff, and are reminiscent at times of Bon Scott-era AC/DC. I never leave the house without the Crust and their rocque & roll on my iPod.

Thanks to a great Satelite radio station called Octane I've recently discovered quite a few new bands that kick it like old school.

Avenged Sevenfold - I initially didn't like them.... Then I heard Nightmare at full volume! It's my current favorite song.

ANew Revolution has some choice stuff, Head against the wall and Done most notably.

Five Finger Death Punch - Never Enough
This song makes me want a tattoo for some reason...

Clutch - 100011 Robot Hive Exodus Not your typical metal but it still rocks!

Not listened to much of Trapt, but when I first started watching Kerrang and the like (Go go Digital Television) I started to fall a bit for Disturbed. Love their cover of Genesis' 'Lands of Confusion'. And Indestructable is great too.

Enjoyed a lot of ELO's stuff (Especially 'Time', 'Yours Truly 2095' is stunning) and my mum was a 70's girl, so long car journeys Queen used to go on.

No worries, I'm definitely going to give the suggested shows a listen to, though if anyone on your station plays some Drone (I wish I could get my hands on their EP, The Queen our Slave. I've only found a few songs on YouTube by them, and have some songs a friends sent me: The Queen is our Slave Run), Opus Bridge, The Delta Fiasco or Machinae Supremacy, there'll be some major props from me.

And again, thanks for even more excellent suggestions everyone, I'm going to be slowly making my way through these before my albums arrive.

.
Going to address a few points here.

1. Death Magnetic is a slight return to their "old" sound, but its more of a Black Album sound, not "true" Metallica, the mix has some of the St. Anger problems and I'm not crazy about the new bass player . A lot of it for me though is they blew a lot of their good will over the years since Load (appropriate name for the album). Edit- I tell you what, I'll give the album a good once over and see if my opinion changes.

2. Temple of the Dog is not Cornells first band. It was actually a super group put together in 1990 by members of Soundgarden (who had actually been formed since 1984) and Pearl Jam to do a tribute album for the late Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone. It is a very good album if you are into grunge.

3. I recently got turned onto Clutch, great band.

4. I don't think STP has recorded a bad song. Great, underappreciated band.

Another good way to find new stuff:

Seed a Pandora station with a band or bands that embody what you're looking for.

It consistently surprises me with great bands I've never heard of, and I'd say I pay fairly close attention to my chosen genres.

While not strictly metal, you can't really go wrong with Priestess, even if they are from Quebec. I prefer there first album, Hello Master, but there's some decent stuff off of there second effort, Prior to the Fire, which is growing on me every time I listen to it.

- I am the Night, Colour Me Black (HM)
- Lay Down (HM)
- Blood (HM)
- Ladykiller (PttF)
- We Ride Tonight (PttF)

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

I'll address the whole Black album thing, from a pre-Black album fan's perspective. (Nobody do the age math on that please!)

The Black album is an important album. It's the one that turned Metallica from the best kept secret of all metal lovers into the biggest rock and roll band on the planet. You can't argue the "quality" of the album as it did become extremely popular with fans and people not aware or interested in them before. Once the smoke cleared and the tours ended and they put out ...........Load (ugh) it became clear that the Metallica we ended up with was a shell of the Metallica we had. Gone were the lengthy songs with changing time signatures and key changes and quite frankly some of the heaviness. We no longer got the head banging middle section of songs to rock out to in between verses, interesting lyrical exploration of tough to deal with subjects or blazing minute long solos from Hammet, instead we got tight, short, heavy popish metal. Songs for the masses. (I'm looking at you Fuel)

Now I don't begrudge them (or any band) the right to experiment with new techniques and song structures; it is afterall their right. But it's also the right of any fan to genuinely like or dislike what the experimentation brings them. They had stored up a lot of credibility, so this opinion comes after years of being let down by them (nail on the head= Some Kind of Monster). But I miss the more complicated Metallica music; I miss the more complilcated band. While maybe they've matured, they've also softened and that just isn't Metallica to me.

I don't hate the Black album, it was the album that got a lot of my non-metal friends to see and appreciate and even love the band I'd admired for years before that. The only problem is it turned them into the real fans and me into the old fossil that liked "those weird old albums". It's a bittersweet thing, the Black album. I had someone I dated years ago borrow my Black CD and after the breakup I found myself not that upset that it wasn't returned. Never bought another one, although in times of nostalgia I think about picking it up again. Hell, I played the grooves off the thing when it came out and I still have every note memorized, but it's still not Metallica-Metallica. For me at least. I can and do appreciate the album, but I don't "love it". When I jones to hear them, I want Blackened, or Battery, or Master or Am I Evil. I could go another decade without hearing Enter Sandman on the other hand.

As I said in another post, I'll give Death Magnetic another try. Maybe there is hope.

well, if we are talking good metal, i suggest you check out blind guardian. a mix of huge, wagnerian symphonic styles and some aggressive thrash, all with lyrics of the nerdiest variety, they did an album entirely based on the lord of the rings, for goodness sake. my personal taste is "night at the opera" is a good starting point, their most recent cd, "at the edge of time" also is very strong and even has a great thrash tune in "ride into obsession"

do you do symphonic metal as well? i'm kind of in a symphonic stage, so nightwish, within temptation and epica have seen some rotation.

as for metallica, yeah im on the "ride the lightning" "justice for all" and "master of puppets" as solid suggestions. The black album was one i personally liked, but it is suggested with some reservations, it has great songs, but more skips than i'd prefer for a full recommendation. "kill em all" also didnt quite jell with me, its good but a bit stripped down.

Not wanting to rehash previous suggestions too much, I'll just go with some stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet:

1) Deftones. Their early stuff is basically textbook nu-metal, albeit very good textbook nu-metal. They've transitioned into something else entirely, equal parts delicately beautiful and heavy as hell. Check out their new record, Diamond Eyes (go with the deluxe version, the bonus tracks are some of the best on the record), and their third, White Pony. Incredible stuff.

2) In Flames. I may have missed someone mentioning this band, I was a little surprised they hadn't been mentioned. Great European metal. I'm not really sure what style to even call them, just check them out.

3) Three Inches of Blood. Somewhat obscure power metal band from Canada. These guys embody everything fun about metal, IMO. I actually made fun of them a bit when I first heard them, but they got stuck in my head and I eventually decided I was off base in criticizing them; the things I was making fun of about them were actually all the things that make them awesome. Great fun metal, none of the navel gazing that seems to have overtaken mainstream metal these days. Check out Advance and Vanquish, you can't go wrong with it.

4) Mastadon. I've only heard a bit of these guys, to be truthful, but I've really dug what I've heard. Very cool prog-death-thrash-whatever metal. Sort of a mixed bag of heaviness.

5) Dared The Knot. This is a shameless plug for some good friends of mine. Great industrial metal band with prog and alternative rock influences. Check them out here. I think you'll like them, they're drawing ideas from a lot of the bands you're asking about.
