Crazy 88's: O & M
anybody can construct a giant Ziggurat of inf, but it takes a cold blooded marketeer to set the whole thing on fire just to prove a point.

It's not necessarily because he's afraid to burn his money.
It could just be because he wants to look impressive and scary and cash in on the success of the 88s without having to expend things like effort. It's basically the marketeer equivalence of hipsters talking about how they were into things before they got all popular. |
In the world of hollywood a sandhog (per Mad magazine)
I prefer the good old term Hypocrite.
Seems like someone wants to be cool without spending the inf the get there.
In the skating world that'd be a poser.

Yup, I see the 88s as the equivalent of building a giant laser to carve a picture of ones face into the moon. Ultimately, just a pointless expression of wasted resources in a tribute to ones own hubris that is clearly visible to anyone who bothers to look.
You dont get cool points for "saying" you could build a giant laser to carve a picture into the moon...

Boasting about the possibility is weak.
Burn your own giant pile, and impress the heck outta all of us!
/e prepares to watch the conflagration...
First - the main reason I haven't bothered to motivate the troops and make it a real effort is because I would find it a real pita to global that much inf from all the various characters on the various servers all over to virtue.
Second - as noted in another thread I was told, "no one would care". Apparently the "wow" factor I would have thought would be fun to get out of ya'll wouldn't exist according to various posts by yourselves. So what would be the fun in achieving it if no one cares, lol.
Lastly - since you already hit the 1 spot on virtue, if we go there now and make a run at it, would it be anti-climactic at this point ? And again as noted "would anyone care".
Now all that being said - would you all promise to be suitably impressed ? I would like a cookie for the effort of course.
Do you want this to be on virtue ? Do you want to throw down the gauntlet elsewhere ?
Finally I will not allow the competitive group to be called "crazy whatevers". But in the info section I'll put "crazy 88's competitor" or some such.
In the end this challenge doesnt mean that much to me. But it seemed like a fun idea to simply get a reaction based on how much you all pat yourselves on the back regarding your efforts. That and some of you purposely antagonize the other SG leaders who take the prestige ranking more seriously. IMO the antagonizing seems to be in poor taste. So it seemed fitting.
Any other thoughts regarding this challenge ?
Over the hills and through the woods.
Crazy 88s on Guardian is now ranked 5th!
I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.

So, you want to get a reaction out of the 88ers BECAUSE you think that some members of the group getting a reaction out of others is in poor taste? Psst, kettle? Pot here. You're black!
Get off the pot and crush the 88ers like bugs! Conversely, you could do nothing and stop your idle and meaningless threats! =) I for one promise to be impressed if you hit the prestige cap.
Ooh, a sarcasm detector. Oh, that's a *real* useful invention. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...t-sarcasm.html

1) Its not to count up your moola and say I "could" buy the top spot. That is not impressive.
2) Its was not explicitly to tweak anyone. That is byproduct or fortunate coincidence. I mean if someone didnt get tweaked would the process still have happened? Yes. In fact, a month after the one (I only saw one such "unnatural" claim) thread calling us cheats we had our largest burning on the winter solstice. The timeline hardly supports that
3) The stated goal was to burn inf. There really was no endgame or machiavellian plot other than to waste inf.
4) We wanted other SGs to burn inf because that would make us more effective. If a leader was annoyed and burned inf to stay ahead of us then that made the plan was more successful. If we never made number one and leaders burned to keep ahead of us I would have been happy.
5) We did tell you to go ahead burn your inf. We would cheer you on. Would we cry when you passed us? Not even a little bit. Im sorry if thats the reaction you were looking for. No one in the 88s would care about being number 2. You would be playing into our clever plot. Maybe not. See #3.
Here...let me give you what youre looking for...
</e scarywallet>
There is no way you or anyone else could top our prestige based achievement. We are the magna *** awesome of the inf holders out there. You guys are posers and would fall short by a significant amount. Name the time and place and we'll give you a month head start. If we're not past you in a month, keep burning, we're just storing up for a big bonfire and have already passed you.
Seriously though....its not that we care or dont care. Its that you havent done anything. Do something and then we'll react suitably...until then youre noise.

That'd be worth watching.
...maybe twice.
I think a lot of people have failed to understand the degree to which there is a hope that other people will be motivated to burn lots of inf to "compete". The 88s can't burn enough to make a dent in the numbers. If everyone started competing with them, though, maybe it'd matter.
If we could get several trillion inf burned, I think the markets would be a lot easier for people to get the hang of.
I was paying prez on Virtue and noticed the #1 spot. Just want to say:
Congrats!
In other words no real answer, or the general answer of "no one would care". Again the very first time I mentioned this was simply wondering at the "wow" factor of it all.
I was willing to take up a challenge but there isnt really one being offered as a whole.
Again bringing me to my malaise over whether the venture is worth doing.
I have nothing to prove. I don't have a need to prove. I was more looking for the fun of the venture. You folks arent making the idea terribly fun at all, lol.
Over the hills and through the woods.
But I'm sure you're too cool to care.

I double dog dare you to try to do it, and if somehow you manage to find some sort of exploit that would allow you to actually take the top spot, I will gnash my teeth and rend my clothing in anguish.
The real beauty of it is that if you don't do it, most people will just think you are all hat and no cattle... Any blowhard can make empty boasts...
c'mon...
do eeeet!

I'm pretty sure the consensus was, "Oh, totally possible, that'd be awesome".
That might not be the answer you'd hope for, but it's not "no-one would care", either.
I don't understand what an "answer" would look like.
Look, this is anarchy. There's no leaders. No one is particularly in charge. We don't necessarily care what other people think. I'd group with Chaos Creator any day of the week, but I don't particularly find the lulz in buying up thousands of some salvage just to delete them. I think the nice lady on Guardian whose SG made #1 seems to be a pretty cool person, and I'd likely enjoy grouping with them if I had any toons on Guardian. I disagree with her vehemently, though, on the nature of the 88s.
But... There is no authority. There is no "us", there is no "them". There's just a bunch of people playing a game all for different motives and with different goals. Some people contributed to the 88s exclusively because doing so offended a particular player they disliked. Other people did it because they thought it was funny. Some people did it because they are convinced that destruction of inf makes the market better. Some people did it because they had nothing better to do and were bored out of their minds.
There's no one with the authority to challenge you, to impose conditions on a challenge, or to enforce the terms of such a thing. If you try to beat the 88s, some people will cheer for you, some people will try to compete with you, and some people will claim you're doing it just to create forum drama and blacklist you. Whatever.
Don't do something or not do it based on whether or not you think some group of people has an opinion on it. Do it or don't because you think it will be fun. This is a video game. If you are not having fun, you are doing it wrong. If you are having fun, you are doing it right, unless you are somehow making it impossible for other people to have fun. That's it. There is no other standard. There are no rules (outside the ToS). There are no requirements, there are no goals. There is no win condition. There is also no loss condition.
There is no answer because there was never really a question.
That said!
If you start a serious effort to compete with the 88s on Virtue (say, if you make it into the top 10 by buying prestige), I'll chuck a billion to ya if you'd like.
