Skynet is just letting us kill ourselves off. Why lift a robotic claw when there is a very good chance that we will do it for him. All he needed to do was get rid of everyone responsible for the project that knew he was sentient.

Beware:NERDS ARE THE WORST FANS!!
At first I thought it read Decapitations, and I was like, who would be dumb enough too..
...then I read what the thread is really about.
Really? Really! Really?! Really.
Programing human extinction. FOR SCIENCE!
Always knew it would be my father's almuni that would doom us all.
Didn't expect it to come in the form of killer robots though.
In the Arena of Logic, I fight unarmed.
for some reason I read the title as decapitation. This is far less scary. Nothing to see here move along...
I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.
You know what I realized? If they teach that robot to drink, then we've got the early ancestor for Bender.
Goodbye, I guess.

"We have been concerned from the very beginning with the ethical implications related to the creation of robots capable of deception and we understand that there are beneficial and deleterious aspects," explained Arkin. "We strongly encourage discussion about the appropriateness of deceptive robots to determine what, if any, regulations or guidelines should constrain the development of these systems." |
Science...it's all about coulda' not shoulda'.
Well gee, Mr. Mad Scientist, do you really think so? "Beneficial and deleterious aspects," you say? I wonder what those could be. I'm drawing a blank on the beneficial. As to deleterious, how does SLAVING IN THE VENUSIAN DEUTERIUM MINES FOR OUR HEARTLESS, DECEPTIVE METAL OVERLORDS sound? Think that might be "deleterious"?

Seriously, though, I can't think of why you want a deceptive robot, except for use in combat drones. Am I missing a possible use here? Well, it'd make a mean AI for video games, too, I suppose.

The Abrams is one of the most effective war machines on the planet. - R. Lee Ermy.
Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?
A: You crash into another one.
is the story that robots can be programmed to be deceitful to other entities? or that the next step would be robots that can tell when other entities are being deceptive? hello automated tsa security with permanently affixed latex arm with camera fingers...
alsowaiting for the next generation of the dogs playing poker picture, with one of them pulling a gun on the 'bot with an ace up its' sleeve....

At this point I consider the Technological Singularity as a practical inevitability.
The only thing that's really uncertain is exactly how long it's going to take. *shrugs*

Yeah, it's not the mines we have to worry about. It's being enslaved DJs on Skynet radio. Trust me on this.

Seriously, folks, this isn't new. It's just the first time it's been reported from a well-funded establishment.
Well when the renegade robots attack there will be only one thing to do......

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
Qualities such as selfishness might be considered negative if they are taken to absolute extremes. But a basic component of the human ego is the need to assert itself and protect itself. If machines can be ingrained with the working concept of selfishness and a means to act on that desire (via the ability to deceive) then they would develop a functional degree of self preservation and by extension a degree of self awareness.
Obviously that has uses in a combat situation (a machine that doesn't "want" to be hurt will probably function more dynamically than a machine that has no real sense of self) but clearly this research will further contribute to the overall impending Technological Singularity in general.
The real trick won't be making selfish robots.
It'll be making them just selfish enough to be productive members of society without being sociopathic.

Alternate title: "Where's Optimus Prime when we need him?"
While this most certainly is impressive to have robots that can decide whether lying will benefit them more than not, I can't help but think that giving robots this ability is an inherently bad idea. At least they didn't name it "Decepticon". It is pretty cool, though.
