Welcome to the game?

Unless you really enjoy repeating the same content over, and over, without checking out what the rest the game has to offer, I recommend you roll a aoe centric toon (melee is great for surviveability) and play the game. Once you have some experience under your belt, you will have a workable toon to farm with.

If you just want influence, I recommend you go to the market section, and take a look at some of the guides there. Tons of info on how to get people to give you lots of influence for things they are too lazy to do.

Fun depends on you. Do you prefer melee, ranged, mix of both? Do you want to play squishies or something sturdy?'

Within those bounds there are some agreed upon "best" combos for farming. Fire/Kin/Fire controllers, SS/Fire Brutes. Those are some of the more legendary ones, but there are plenty of combos that perform similarly to the "top tier" so it's really all down to what flavor you want at the time.

trick question?? Farming isnt fun, cant give you answer. Why dont dev just make it possible to buy a lvl50 toon for 20$ and get all this farming nonsense delt with. Its like RL, its the journey, not the destination, that matters. Its playing the game, not getting to 50 asap that matters.

There are people who enjoy farming.

MOST people who ask about farming are under the impression that:

1) They need the top end equipment to play level 50 content
2) They need to get billions of inf for the top end equipment
3) Farming is the best (sometimes, they think it's the only) way to get billions of inf.

of those three, I'd say 2) is correct. 3) CAN get you billions of inf, but usually you can make it faster and far more easily on the market.

Oh, I'm going to add
4) Marketeers are evil parasites on the necks of the hard working noble farmers. Clearly we're forcing people to sell to us at a price they themselves set, and forcing other people to NOT leave bids at 1 inf over our bid price, and forcing those people to pay our prices to have the shinies right now. Trilateral commission has NOTHING on us.

Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.

So you think you're a hero, huh.

You forgot,
5) Farmers who market are the lowest of the low. They know they are hurting themselves by marketing, but are compelled to do it, even if it makes them throw up after a marketing session.

Surprisingly enough, I'd say the funniest set is the one you find fun, so maybe just try what looks fun and go from there. Now it seems your looking for a toon that is fun, and can do amazing things when in practice. So my suggestion goes to either Dominators or Controllers. If you don't like loads of control with damage second. I would suggest Scrappers as another. As for exact combos to start out with I'd say something like these.

#1) FOTM- Fire/kin/stone Controller. Now not sure how you are about having a toon just about everyone has made, but easy place to start.

#2) Second FOTM- Elec/Shield/? Scrapper. Not real good to start out with, you need close to soft cap to be ok, and decent recharge.

#3) Fire/psi/fire Dominator. I've heard nothing but good things, and easy to use.

#4) And my fav Mind/Stone/Psi Dominator. Right away easy to solo with plenty of control and plenty of integration.

Edit: Welcome to the game, and hope you find your place.

Emp/Assault Rifle defender. Best farmer in the game.

Plant/Storm Controller is the best farmer hands down.

Elec/Ice Blasters are hands down the most fun and best at farming in the game.

My personal favorite is the elec/shield brute. Very fun and very good AOE damage.

LIES....

I would have believed you had you said Plant/Storm/Ice.

"These are not the farmers you are looking for!" <Performs Jedi mind trick as Salty waves his hand at the OP>

I find Fun and 'Farming' to be mutually exclusive.

how does a fire/dark corruptor stack up against a fire/kin controller in terms of AoE farming effectiveness and fun?

The Fire/Kin is waaaay faster.

As others have said, a dedicated farming character is rather unneccesary. Not only can you do all the content in the game as the devs intended without the level of influence you'd need to farm to aquire, but there are more time-efficient methods of gaining that influence.

That said, I'm not going to say you should forget farming altogether. While they might not reach the income of a, say, Fire/Kin, any character with a decent level of survivability and AoE damage can farm*. Thus, my suggestion would be to find a character that meets these conditions - and there are a lot that do - that you think would be fun for you in normal play, and then just do some farming on the side when you feel like it. If that character happens to be on of the top farming builds, then go for it, but I really strongly recommend against picking those purely cos they can farm well. Play what is fun, not what it good.

*And, indeed, with the introduction of H/V merits, any character can pull in a decent amount of income just by doing 5-6 missions a day. Not up there with farming a Fire/Kin for 6 hours a day or anything, but certainly respectable none-the-less.

I would just like to say, this is the way to go. Farming is fine and all, but doing Tips for A-Merits is nearly just as profitable, doesn't require a specialized build, is alot more interesting, and you get to pick what recipes you want.

I have to disagree with hallstorm i'm afraid...

It is true in game as it is with most things in life, things are fun when you are good at them.
Personally I find farming lots of fun...
This silly business of buy a lvl 50 for £12 or w/e $20 is, well it's just stupid.
Hallstorm, if you happen to think that all this farming business is nonsense, then why post in a thread about it? Your post was neither constructive, informative or useful to anyone.

Now..........

Having said that, I also feel very strongly that farmers should be at a point in their CoX career that they would not have to ask for help on what to make or how to build it...

If you are worthy of farming, these are questions you should not have to ask, if you do have to ask remind yourself of this little analogy.

You are learning to swim, and at the same time
wondering if shaving your head will make you faster.

Think about it...

I am simply pointing out that there should be a difference between farmers, and mindless sheep...

The OP doesn't even know why they want to farm... the have no knowledge of IO's and it's very obvious that this desire to farm comes from seeing others wanting to get in on farming teams.

They are following the croud, like... well, sheep.

Fulmens, It isn't oftern I will disagree with you, but I can't let this slide. There are many different ways to farm. Farming purps? Farming to PL? Farming for drops, etc.

Yes anyone *can* farm anything, but there are people in this game that turn it into an artform.

The biggest challenge I have had in this game was back when there wasn't an aggro cap, when you could have a whole map chasing you down, and you are running around using the map and breaking line of sight to keep the mobs on you. Convieniently, BLOS also gives you a breather till your next stop. Like any other content in this game though, once you do it a couple times, it takes no effort to trivialize it.

Leveraging the map, your powers, the damage types, mob resistances, getting the right recharge down for your attack string are all things a decent farmer takes into account when setting up. Often times taking something hard, and through repetition, making it easy. The first thing I do when setting up my farm is jack up the difficulty for my toon.

In the end, once you do run through the content a few times, It is all repetative. It matters not if you do it 20 times, or 2000...

Donna_ wasn't being elitist, She was telling the op to learn the ropes first. Replace "Worthy" with "ready".

That sounds like Kim Possible.

There is nothing fun about farming. So whatever you find least boring I guess.

Most ATs can farm. To maximize your farm you have to first decide what you plan to farm. So if you plan to farm Malta, pick something resistant to end drain. If you plan to farm Observers, play something with lots of resists since Observers have lots of to hit buff. The correct "best" is only answered once you decide what you plan to farm.
