Flickering Graphics
ok guys, read though whats been going on, some are assuming the fault even though the opposite has been noted.
Also having this issue.
desktop nVidia GTX260(216)

Quick update. Tonight I turned off dynamic shadows, going back to normal stencil ones. Played a good number of hours with no lock-ups.
Whether they're the direct cause, or if they just help memory usage to balloon out quicker I don't know. |
To update: I'm not having any crashes and it does indeed seem to be linked to both dynamic shadows and ambient occlusion.

Though I've decided to just hold off on really diving into Praetoria till the new shiny syndrome goes away.
Personally, I found that using /unloadgfx stopped the flickering for a short period of time. The black flickering I mean. It would of course return a few minutes later.
It does not however fix the flickering of objects such as park benches that mysteriously appear/disappear depending on which way I'm looking or moving.
We'll see....
well leaving Ambient Occulusion on and my Shadow settings high, /unloadgfx did indeed work. Now that was after I had logged in a few characters on one server to swap day badges, Later on I'll try it on a fresh load in and see what happens.

Bleh, I don't think I can play with the flickering or with Dynamic Shadows and Ambient Occlusion off.
Branching Paragon Police Department Epic Archetype, please!
I had it.

I fixed it by turning off Anisotropic Filtering. I defaults at x4. Turning it completely off killed most of the flickering for me (It's still there in some spots, but it's far FAR reduced from where it was).
Other than the occasional spot or two the only real flicker I get is when dragging the scroll bar on the badge listing(Nav Bar). It is really bad though whenever I scroll the badges even just slightly.

Although I seem to get a similar jumpy-ness in FireFox as well, thought it was a problem with my mouse.
I cleaned the mouse (found one nearly invisible bit of fuzz/lint - that may appears to have helped somewhat), But I'm still having issues when scrolling fast in FF & CoH in the longer badge windows.
I've also tried adjusting all the available mouse settings - that are known to cause "issues" with scrolling in FireFox, and it seems to happen a bit less... but its still happening?
In Firefox it's just a jumpy-ness (up or down) like something recently "broke" 'smooth scrolling' or 'autoscrolling' = it's not a major problem.
BUT, In CoH the whole damn UI/screen flickers and this IS a major problem, anyone have any answers aside from the standard/generic ones? Because I've already tried all the "usual suspects"...
City of Heroes didn't fail, City of Heroes was killed. If a 747 dropped on your house, you'd say you were killed, not you failed to find a safer dwelling.

Yes.
I've had it most noticably and consistently on the enhancement screen.
It is (seemingly) random at other times.
No crashes, and no similar effect in any other programs.
I was going to come in and post this same thing this morning (OP).... Though I had no crashes at all.
It would make sense that it is somehow tied to the shadows as it doesn't do it at all inside mishes which don't use/have shadows. I haven't played with my settings because I didn't really have an idea where to start but now that we are leaning towards shadows/ambient occlusion, I will mess with it when I get home.

I'm getting flickering, bad LOD (though that may be unrelated) and lockups as well
Only seems to happen outside in Praetoria. However once the flickering starts switching to the enhancement screen, power selection screen or taking a screenshot will lock the game
I made a video and watched frame by frame and it looks like the Ambient Occlusion is going nuts.
Here is an annotated youtube vid I made:

I have also been plagued by flickering screens. It's the worse when I'm doing something with the menus, like when I level up on the odd numbers and the game takes me into the enhancement slot screen, the whole thing will flicker when I place a new slot on a power. It will also flicker when I'm reading through the dialog for a new mission. These show up as a white screen flicker.
Now I also get a flicker when I'm out traveling around Praetoria. These come off as a black screen flicker.
I've tried playing around with the different settings, but I'm not sure if I tried the combination that some of you have done. I'm going to give those a try tonight.

Praetoria was built with Ultra Mode in mind. Its a shame because all of us on this thread (and many more that I've talked too) have the flickering problem only while in Praetoria, and cannot experience the new city zones as they were meant to be seen.
I don't understand is why GR was pushed live when this bug existed (and was reported) in Beta, and why the Devs have not commented about it. As it is, it destroys the experience of Praetoria, and is a real disappointment after waiting so long for this expansion to be released.
Here's to hoping this glitch is addressed by the Devs soon.

Running advanced shadows on med, except with shadows set to "near", has helped with my flickering while moving around ingame.
So I played around with different settings last night and I never found any combination that removed the flickering problem completely.
I tried the advanced shadows suggestion, still flickered.
I toyed with the ambient occlusion, still flickered.
Anything to do with windows inside the game, like clicking open the map, looking at clues, doing anything with the powers/enhancement windows makes the whole screen flicker.
Also I did find that while flying around Praetoria when the lights are coming on or going off between daytime and nighttime is when the flickering is at it's worse.
Just to make one more note, I also get some flicker when I'm inside missions.
If this could be cleared up I would be so completely enjoying this expansion.
I don't have GR yet. I'm getting the same flickering all over the place. I noticed it pretty bad in Atlas Park. Also at random in menus and frequently in the Enhancement screen. It's popped up less frequently in CoV zones.

I'm having this problem too. Found this thread whilst the servers were down for maintenance & figured I would take a look at my Shadows & Ambient Occlusion setting when I could log back in, thought if I turned these down I could play without these Lockups which really ruin the game for me.
Upon checking it appears I have Ambient Occlusion disabled & Shadows at 'Lowest', so I don't believe these are the problem.
I'm a returning player coming to see this new Going Rogue & ... this is pretty poor. That & the fact there appears to be no copies of Going Rogue on the shelves, in the UK at least, ... I am getting the impression that CoX is dying & the Dev's know it & don't really care.
After Tabula Rasa I would not be surprised if NCSoft pulled the plug soon

The problems are definitely not because the Devs don't care. The Paragon Studios Devs are among the most responsible and caring Devs I've ever seen when it comes to their player's contentment.
There are problems yes, there are always problems after a major expansion as this one is. While I have not had the crashing issue, really the only problem I've had is the flickering, and knowing how often the Devs watch and read the forums I think you can bet they are looking into the problem.
I've had very bad menu flickering on bigger/longer menu screens. The badge window or badge tab of a player profile who has a lot of badges is an almost surefire way to replicate this for me. I've turned all the ultra mode settings off and it hasn't had an impact on the menu flicker at all.
Exiting to the login screen and changing characters seems to make it worse, as does typing something. It may just be my impression, but until I type something into my chat bar, I don't seem to get any/much menu flicker.
I'm using a radeon hd 5850, amd athalon 64 x2 5400+ (dual core 2.8 ghz), 6 gb ram and windows 7 64-bit, without any overclocking. I've had the problem on every driver version of catalyst I've installed since UM went live.
Back in the ultra mode test I was using the same system but with an nvidia gts 8800 512, 4 mb ram and windows XP 32-bit; I didn't have the problem then.

Happens to me too, the whole environment randomly flickers all black only while moving.

Once I turned Shadows down/off (cannot recall which at the moment) the zone flickering went away, but the flickering in any window that I have to scroll is pretty bad.
Edit: The zone shadow flashing is something that cropped up during Beta on the version prior to the one that went live. The windows scroll flashing has been occurring for me on live prior to GR Beta.
