Weird rules you make for yourself

Heroes may not leave Outbreak without getting Isolator Badge. Eventhough you can get it via Oroboros now.

I've been working on the idea of creating characters for specific zones that they protect. So when a certain hero reaches the appropriate level I turn off his XP and he guards that zone.

I have a Roman themed scrapper who resides in Cim, a punch drunk boxer in KR, and I've started a leprechaun tanker destined for Croatoa.

Let's see . . . Oh. When I'm on a robot type character I won't go into bodies of water. If it's before travel powers I go around, after I fly over them.

I have a Rad/Rad who only takes harmful powers because radiation is bad.

I have a character who is a magical golem made out of a Mystic 8 Ball who only says things like,

"Outlook not good."
"Yes. Definitely."

when talking to other players.

I must be a little thick because it only now just hit me. You HAVE to break the one character rule to play in Praetoria, don't you? MWAH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

not much of one for self imposed limitations, but I do have my 'normal human' themed ninja/willpower stalker (with power graphics disabled) who has no travel power but Ninja Run and who has to navigate the game rooftop-to-rooftop whenever possible.

it makes getting to missions an engaging mini-game.
Hey, that's not a limitation, that's just plain fun! I changed five (I think) characters to Ninja Run/Swift/Hurdle (mostly Naturals) and I'm having a blast between missions, whereas before it was kind of go there and not pay much attention. It's very immersive!

Power customisation has definately helped me here, but there's still some that I won't play.
I went that route with a Stage Magician concept. Fire/Psi seemed to fit that concept nicely.

MaHaBone23 must adapt, improvise, overcome:

Only when grammatically correct. I have Two-Fisted Sister, but I would never do Fire-Dude. Or Fire Dude' or anything like that. Also, no substituting lower case "L"s for upper case I's.
Ah, so that would let out my The Knight-Watchman and Nuclear-Warhead. By that token, Spider-Man is right out as well.

I will not compromise on Cut-Up though. The hyphen was intentional, as he's my "bouncing around joking Ditko hero" and the spelling is a Spidey homage.

I misspelled the name of my BS/SD scrapper Metranome, and it kills me. He's 32, I like his concept/costume/etc, and Metronome is taken. I can't bring myself to reboot him.

Work it in! Say he's...dyslexic or something!

That's really cool! I like that a lot!

It does put me in mind of another rule of mine, but one I'm sadly behind on fulfilling. I have to go around and find the actual building (and take pictures) where each of my characters live (only one doesn't live in Paragon. Cut-Up lives at the Polk & Prodd Sanitarium just outside of town ). I think I haven't done this for about 1/4 of my characters (newer ones). I will get to it eventually, though.

Cut-up makes sense, although I've never liked that "Spider-man" was hyphenated. I would not be surprised that there was some weird story behind that, like there was some other obscure comic book character called "Spider Man" and Spiderman just looked too hard to read.
Okay, so maybe not weird, but a story none-the-less.

I may just use the free server transfer to do a ghetto rename on him, if i can think of something that still fits his concept. He's a clockwork toy soldier little guy, so dyslexia seems like an odd affliction for him.

Some (or all) of these are repeats, and some are more guidelines than rules, but here are mine.

- All characters log out where they'll get Day Job credit, and MUST be in a comfortable position. Mostly I find a desk, bench, or a barstool, and utlize the appropriate sit emote. If I plan to log that character for a great length of time, I put them somewhere they'll be entertained as well, namely Pocket D. (Hey, if it was me in the game, I'd hang out in a nightclub all the time.)

- No character does AE at all. To me it's simply too immersion-breaking. I've considered making a character like Decorum's, who only does AE, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

- I hardly ever do sewer teams. They really bore me. Sometimes I'm just that desperate and on a character whose soloing ability sucks, but it's rare and I try to avoid it.

- I level to 50 at the trainer I started with. So far that's only come up twice, but there you go.

- I always pick a Badge name that's appropriate for the character, and go out of the way to get one if it'll fit.

- My Stalkers don't get the travel powers either, just Sprint, Ninja Run, and Hurdle or Swift (or both). I too find it fun to navigate via rooftops and trick jumps, and with Hide I don't have to worry about aggro much. They do have that jump pack for emergencies.

- I never use stray numbers or punctuation to fudge in a name. I will use them if it's appropriate.

- If I decide a character will work better as something else, I delete and reroll without a second thought. Concept is everything.

- I don't push characters to 50 just to have them there anymore. I've done it twice to unlock the EATs, and felt bad about it both times.

- Relatedly, I don't play my 50s. No motivation there at all.

i just made a new rule today:

Please double check your time off request for the correct date before sending it off to the boss. This will help avoid taking the day off BEFORE a major launch. >

No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded...

Reading over these I find I have a couple of more rules than I thought I did. o.o

My toons must have a character concept as well, no "I want a Grav/Thorns Dom so BANG" for me. (My trouble is I come up with far more character concepts than I'll ever be able to run. Maybe I should give them away or something... Sometimes the concept is open enough I have to decide what sets fit them best, or they even leave it open for them to be anything; really, what does 'Clave Dark 5' suggest, other than say a Dark/Dark/Dark defender or something?)

My toons also always get a badge title fitting them, no exceptions. Isn't that what they're there for?

I only really have two rules; My heroes and villains must be on separate servers, and my male and female characters must also be on separate servers. So all my girl heroes are separate from my guy heroes, and so on.

Posted

1. All Heroes train up at Miss Liberty at Lv50.

2. My order of getting to 50 "must" be Hero, Villain, Hero, Villain. A pattern like that.

(NOTE:: In six years of playing, I only have THREE 50s, a hero, a villain, and then a hero. So these rules are more of a minor pattern/trend than an actual rule.)

50s: Silent Spy - MA/Regen Scrapper | Tinkerhell - SS/Inv Brute | Extrasensory - Psi/Men Blaster | Ana Cruz - DP/PD Corruptor | Sara Thunderbird - Elec/Elec Scrapper | Pinstrike - Spines/SR Scrapper | Cold Feet - Cold/Cold Blaster

it definitely makes you appreciate the environments more.

I started him before Ninja Run and he got around with swift, hurdle, sprint & as many GotA +runspeeds as I could stuff into his build. Ninja Run is great because it delivers the same kind of travel experience but is fast enough that I don't get impatient and resentful. Plus the animation is perfect for his concept.

Most of my characters actually use Ninja Run/Hurdle now. Its such a great combo. Its not as fast as Super Speed/Super Jump, but considering Ninja Run comes automatically and I tend to get Fitness Power Pool anyways, its much nicer than getting a travel.

(I also have 6 year vet badge, so I end up picking Fly [w/o Hover] at Lv30 to get to heights I can't jump to.)

All of my tankers use the "Tank" badge. Always.

I have a few:

1.- Only have 1 character of each AT active at all times. If I want to roll a new character of a given AT, the previous one must be deleted or moved out of the server.

2.- All my characters must be able to do at least one of these:
a.- Solo Giant Monsters
b.- Solo Archvillains
c.- Solo +4/x8 spawns of most enemy groups (barring wierd stuff like Rularuu or custom OP'd critters in the AE)
...while still being useful contributions on a TF/Raid team.

3.- All my characters have "Silver" on their names (Silverius, Silverster, Silverette, Silveratrix, etc)

4.- All my characters must be distributed equally in gender: 6 male toons, 6 female toons

I don't take Aid Self. Ever.

If I use Super Jump or Ninja Run I do my best to stay off the ground as much as possible. That can mean rooftops, the train rail, power lines, or whatever else I can find.

If I use fly for a travel power I fly up as high as possible and log out. I don't use fly on many characters so it is usually a nice little surprise when I log in and start falling right away. It has caused me a couple deaths before, but I don't mind because debt builds character.

This is about the only real 'rule' I have for myself. I'm also with the people who said they'll delete a character if they'd work better as something else, and I've done it with characters up to 40 or so.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

My only real rule is not to use misspellings of character names in game. I'd even use the spelling of a number if I warrant the use of a number eg: Link Six - explained in a bio that they are the sixth in a line.

Ok so I have another - I have to write a bio for a character even if I don't rp with them and if I can't by level 20 they get deleted before I bother with extra costumes or capes.
