Consolidated Base Concerns, 5/2010

Wow, this is an awesome thread, I have actually learned a lot...

Being relatively new to base construction, this had a lot of great infro, such as pressing c while in edit mode to get chat box up!

I am still trying to figure out how you work with doorways, specifically how you get them to look like the rest of your base.

I do have an addition, wish list, to your list.

Have bases recognize alignment such as Hero/Vigilante and Villain/Rogue; as a result allow bases to have teleporters to go both red and blue sides respectivelly, but if you are "blueish" base only Vigilantes could use the red side teleporters at base, same on reddish side with Rogues using blue side teleproters.

Unfortunately, you can't at the moment. Each half of the doorway will pick up the look of the room that it connects to, but that's the closest you get. We've never actually gotten a good reason for it to not have the ceiling and floor trim. You can suppress the trim everywhere else if you want to, though.

It's an ongoing desire and has been suggested to the devs. We have no idea what they're planning, but something's been said along the lines of considering it. It was very non-committal.

It has been a bit since I've last looked in this thread, but I think I can answer why we don't have the following:

This (no bottom or back) is to speed up graphics rendering. If the items had bottoms or backs the game would still have to process the unseen side, this would bog down the graphics engine and the developers would either have to further limit the amount of objects that could be put into the base or up the minimum requirements to only the top end video cards.

and yet... giving bottom skins to.. say... the floor tile(s)... would greatly decrease the number of items that folks use to create their multiple floor levels.

Not unless they're giving us floor tiles with more textures than the while tile deal we have now. I only use that as a last resort when I need to cover something else that's an even worse fit aesthetically.

First off, I would like to say great job on compling yet another list of base items requests. But does anyone else feel like I do, that feeling you get when you bang your head against the wall, or you could get a better response from a wall, then you can from a Dev! I mean how many times do we have to post ideas in the "Forums", because the Devs read them everyday. But if they really do read them, why don't they respond to our posts? I mean since the conception of the base came about, peeps have being requesting new items. How hard is it really to incorperate some of these requests. People want pool tables, slot machines, vending machines, ect, ect, ect... Don't we already find these particular items in missions that we play? Yeah Im sure that they are already there. So why do the devs ignore the base edit players?

A popular theory that some have proposed boils down to "coding".... they are deathly afraid to try to "untangle the christmas lights".

But that doesn't make it any less necessary for doin'.
So, we keep track... as best we can.

There were a lot of really great suggestions here. I hope I'm not bringing up something already mentioned. I checked, but didn't notice it.

I'd love to see a bulletin board or messaging system added to the bases. Right now, there's only two ways to share information with other group members.... the MOTD (which is limited in length), and through SG chat. What I'd like to see is a base item that you can build that can be placed in any room that adds a messaging/posting system to the base. I kind of picture a bulletin board or terminal. When you click on it, you get an interface that lists various sections.

Events: Can post when someone is hosting an event on a certain date/time. Could be putting a task force together or an MA run or a trial.
Notices: Can post things of general interest. For instance, let people know there's new storage units, what the rules are for using storage, addition of workable items, etc.
Policies: Can list detailed SG policies here.
Seeking/Looking for: Can post here if you're looking for something special. It could be a certain IO that's too hard to find on the market, or too expensive, or that you're looking to run a certain task force with SG members.
Selling/Offering: A section for listing enhancements or recipes that you're willing to sell to SG mates cheaper than you would on the market. Or maybe you're offering services, such as helping mates get experience while you run arcs or MA stories.

I really think there needs to be something like this to help unify a SG. A separate messaging/posting system lets you share information that otherwise people would have to go to outside forums to do.

I love to base create now that i learned a thing or two about stacking lol. My wish list would just for cosmetic stuff.

- Pool Tables
- Black Jack Table
- Those Pocket D laser lights (I have a club in my base lol)
- More furniture
- More fun stuff in general
- I would love for more of the things that people wrote here too.

But thats why they call it a wish list

Mmm, this is sucha great thread...

I been planting trees inside my base, and use the dirt mounds to cover their bases to give the illusion they are actually growing out of the ground and not in planters. Unfortunately many of the planters are very tall and very difficult to cover with the 2 choices for dirt mounds. While I was traveling in front of the train in Talos I saw trees with very short skirts, these would be ideal to cover with mounds and not have to over do the mound laying as I had. So my suggetion is to add base trees with bases as such are found in Talos by the train station.

Incidentally, if you ever log in Champions and want to see my base, give me a yell @Stormfront, I gave my base a very distintive ancient druid like feel...

OK, skimmed through the whole thread and don't think I saw this expressly addressed: can Vigilante/Rogue collect teleport beacons on both "sides?"

Hiya Yes, Vigilantes and Rogues can collect the Teleporter Beacons for each zone. BUT, Teleporters for a Hero SG can only have Beacons to Hero Zones, AND Teleporters for a Villain SG can only have Beacons to Villain Zones, WITH the exceptions of the Rikti War Zone and Pocket D, since they are Co-Operative zones. Now, there are some awesomely glitched SG/VG's out there that have glitched base rules that glitchily allow them to glitch the Beacons of the opposite side into their glitchy base Teleporters. But, in case you missed it, this is a glitch, and is not working as intended. Will, at some point, the Devs make it so we can have Beacons to both sides? Perhaps. ::shrug:: Good luck with your base creations.

Happy Gaming,

Red

And that really nails it on the head. They have pasted the base system together so poorly that they are afraid to poke at it. And so we suffer.

I would add one other thought which may or may not belong here.
In my discussions with other base builders the consensus seems to be that we love our bases so much we would even be willing to PAY for a new Base Booster pack.
Surely the thought of some extra income might prod some of the devs to give priority to bases.
Heck, I would even pre-order a base booster pack so they could hire a few more coders to 'untangle the x-mas lights' as you say.

But I wont hold my breath.

The only base "decoration" I'm interested in seeing at this point is some sign of developer interest in supporting bases. Until that happens, all other concerns regarding bases are distantly secondary for me.

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

I had this idea back in the day with another Forumite called Monitor Duty but it never took off. It would be a combination Base and SG thing. I'll try to keep this brief but it's complicated so here goes:

The idea is to have items in the Base that would make it possible for one character to participate/help on missions being run by a team. He would play the Oracle/Overwatch role, guiding the team and helping them in small ways from his chair. Sort of a '9th guy on the radio' sort of thing.

The SG connection comes in because the team has to have at least one member of the same SG as the person doing Overwatch.

The Base would require a piece of Control gear (call it a Monitor for now). A member of the SG clicks on it and gets a window through which they can see the minimap of the team they're connected to. The Monitor would only enable the Overwatch to see the minimap and communicate with the team in the Team Chat. Additional gear might enable the Overwatch to grant the team small (1% or so) buffs or inflict debuffs on enemy mobs defined as tactical control of the team, messing with the lights and doors in the mission building and so on. Another piece of ad-on equipment might allow the Overwatch to call for reinforcements once for his team (in the form of PPD, Longbow, Arachnos or whatever seems appropriate). At the top end the Overwatch might be able to actually see enemy mobs (by hacking enemy cameras) and alert the team to incoming danger. All of these items would cost Power and Control to operate of course.

I see this as having implications for Bases, SGs AND RPers. It's been done in movies and comics countless times...the guy in the van guiding the other guy creeping through the enemy base or whatever. The buffs would have to be small so as not to be overwhelming and the reinforcements would mean less to a high-power team since they would spawn at the level of the SG member on the team and not the actual mission (therefore a lvl 40 running at +2 will have his reinforcements gished pretty fast but it's something...).

As for the Overwatch, this person might glean a small amount of Exp (say 10% of what a member of the team would get) for his time and efforts (or Inf if he's a 50). Also there would be badges for guiding teams well and so forth.

In any case...a fine list and obviously a LOT of work. Kudos for taking the time and energy!

I really don't see any of this as viable. Far too complicated and do you think anyone would really want to sit unmoving in their SG base and do nothing while everyone else was playing? And if you give the person in the chair any XP at all then it becomes just a leech tool for someone to park an AFK toon in.

But I do have one question.

Why would the reinforcements spawned have to be any different from the mission level?

The Base Building Committee is currently running an event to try and rally Base Builders. The thread is on the Base Forum.

Bases get no luv because atm they attract very little attention relatively speaking. Earlier efforts to get the Base Community to actually DO something to convince the Devs to take notice all fell through.

The Base Community needs to show the Devs that we're willing to work for Base improvements...not just make lists of wants and demands. The BBC is planning a series of events to raise Base awareness but we NEED people to put forth the effort...not just gripe.

I just recently returned from taking a year or so off. Why can't it still be 999? It's all virtual - including the rent money. O.o I mean, if real money was to be made, i could understand why it took such a huge drop....

[*]Bring other existing game functions inside the base (as was done with functions introduced in Issues 9 and 10) For example:
- Tailor (perhaps combine with the request for a SG Costume system)
- Auction House
- Trainer
- Mission Difficult Setter
- Mission Doors
Gawd yes. I rarely go to my base - so this would improve going in and doing things. Like a one-stop shop.

Also, why only 2 tp locations per unit? Can't we have more? It would just make things so much easier

And the personal storage - i think it would be a good idea if we could store more than just salvage. How about everything? Put recipes, enhancements, maybe insp's as well?

Posted

As far I know, Recipes are the only things that can't be stored (other than in WW/BM/Mail). It would be nice if there were a base item that filled this void -- even if it needed to be crafted.

I've made updates to the Base Usage and Base Building sections.

  • marked alphabetical storage as done
  • added Veteran Reward and Banner bugs
There is another item that I would appreciate confirmation on from our community; supposedly, the leak/crash when spending a lot of time editing was addressed. Have folks been experiencing better performance in that respect? Has anyone else tested for the memory leak?

I see all the items and patterns on missions that I would so want in my base. I mean it's all just decretive now. So why not let bases get it. Also I think a tailor, auction house and recipe storage would be nice. Even know not everyone enjoys base creation some of the community does and even if they added some stuff each update. Hey why not.
