VEATs and HEATs
You should try logging in one of those villains over 20 but I recall people in beta actually had to train up to a level of 20+ to unlock it. So if just logging in doesn't do it, you need to have someone gain a level who is 19+ and go train them.
|
I did have a spare Earth/Fire dom hovering at 19 just in case though.
I don't really know where else to put this but is anyone else rather pissed that just about anyone can get a EAT now?
|
There are called Epic or Prestige because it is a badge of honor just having one. I know when I was a newb I used to think it was so cool when someone had HEAT you had to earn it, you had to know what you are doing, you had to work to get it.
|
I've played a lot of MMOs, RPGs, FPSs and PC games of all stripes.
I enjoy CoH/V thoroughly. It's a very fun romp, and I love the genre, the costume options, the game background.
All that being said, this game is easy.
Seriously, getting to 50 is not hard - you don't have to "earn" 50.
Get into a group and you can practically /faceroll your way to 50.
Now just some dumb *** newb who spend a week getting to 20 can get one. It took me 8 months to get my 1st 50 blueside and I had been playing almost 2 years before I got a 50 redside.
|
I got my first 50 in about a month and a half blueside. Approx 50% of the time I was solo, the other 50% was radio mishes/story arcs. No AE.
My second character, redside, took about a month to 50.
Combination of solo, paper mishes and AE mishes (starting around L40) - all in roughly equal measure.
So I really don't think getting to 50 is any chore unless your AT/Build is difficult to solo with and your time constraints prevent you from frequent grouping.
No one but the devs know why they made this change.
We do know that many of them thought that unlocking archetypes at 50 was always a bad idea. |
In my opinion, and it's only that, an opinion, I think they dropped the level requirement for no other reason than "what the hell? What's the point in leaving the unlockable at 50?"
|
Starting in Praetoria, IIRC, L20 is when you need to make your future faction choice as it pertains to traveling throughout Paragon City & the Rogue Isles.
That L20 character, upon choosing one faction or another, may actually unlock the faction specific EAT for the side you choose. This would allow players who dislike one faction or the other to level in Praetoria, choose a faction at 20 and unlock the faction specific EAT - while avoiding the time spent to 50 playing for a faction they dislike when their only goal is to actually play a different AT.
Also, neither VEATs nor HEATs can start in Praetoria, so this may be some sort of AT population balance incentive.
So basically something for players who want to play EATs, but don't like the faction in which they originate.
Or maybe they just flipped a coin when the idea came up.

Be well, people of CoH.
Jealousy is ugly. It corrodes your morality and clouds your judgment. It also steals your ability to enjoy what you have.
If I am at a gourmet 5-star restaurant and the couple next to me got a free meal but I have to pay full price. My food still tastes exactly the same. My waiter will treat me exactly the same. The restaurant still has the same atmosphere, furniture, decorations. If I let jealousy steal the pleasure from my dinner, that's my fault, my problem, my weakness. In short, grow up and don't blame the developers for your own character flaw. |
Then when CoV came out I bought it, and got to 35 within a month. Realized I was rapidly running out of non-newspaper content and nearly stopped playing the character. Grandville reinvigirated my love of masterminds. But again when I got to 45 I almost stopped playing the character. You know, running out of content again. It was the announcement of VEAT that finally got my second level 50. And I felt great about the accomplishment.
To me, playing my EAT was a proof of the skills I'd picked up from playing. And I felt saddened every time someone came up to my warshade asking me to PL them with my 50.
Still, this is a good change. No matter my personal view.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.
Nope, doesn't bother me a bit.
I don't care about what other people do, as long as they don't do it to me. I don't care about what other people have, as long as they haven't taken it from me. I don't care what strangers think of me in a game.
I don't see where I have a stake in this, really. I already had Kheldians and Arachnos unlocked. I can't see where more people playing these ATs diminishes me in any way.
I don't think anyone ever respected me for having them, so I don't think I've lost anyone's respect because they will be more common.
/e shrug
I admit this rant does make me think of the time last Summer when I tried out World of Warcraft. There was always a big crowd of people hanging around the bank in their best armor and showing off their raid gear. And always at least one guy on a gnome-built motorcycle. That really doesn't play well here.
I had exactly *1* villian that I started about 2 years ago and he was lvl 30 or so when the announcement came out about lowering the requirements to 20. Purely as a personal decision, I busted my hump to get him to 50 just so that I could say I did it when it was "hard". Heroside it actually tok me about 2 years to get my first 50, more from Alt-ititus than anything else. As someone pointed out earlier, different people have different playstyles, time constraints, desires, etc.
I have no feeling one way or the other about them lowering it to 20, and I'm certainly not going to hate on some new person because the rules have changed. In fact, I'm glad in a way because my second account I only have *1* villian and I made sure that he hit level 20 the day before I17 hit

Don't think anyone else ever found it impressive, though. Did I mentioned I deleted him at 50? And again at 30something?

OO OO OO!!! Right after I dinged 50 on my PB someone sent me a tell stating that they were impressed I could tolerate it long enough to get to 50.

That is a change, I forget which issue added it. You still need one on each side, but now you don't need them on each server.
|
Edit: Just checked, and one of my PB's on Freedom has every anniversary badge including the first and i have never had a level 50 on Freedom. My current highest is 41 or so.

IN addition, the devs said before that setting the unlock to 50 was a mistake. VEATs only got that requirement for parity.
Personally, I would have preferred to change the requirements to completing a SF/TF. Moonfire would be a good TF to do for it since it gives honorary peacebringer and a new SF is always a good thing for red side. You can level to 50 by just doing TFs after getting to 10, but there are gaps redside.
The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.
Playing a Kheldian requires some work compared to others, but they can be pretty impressive. Arachnos Soldiers are awesome right out of the box provided you pick certain powers.

Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
So now can we see some Kheldian story content that non-Kheldians can access without a Task Force?
It is my personal belief that the reason Kheldians are less popular than Spiders is not entirely a matter of mechanics (although Spiders being mechanically better doesn't help), but rather because when you unlock the Soldier of Arachnos villainside your response is "oh man, I can play as one of those guys I keep fighting with the cool weird attacks!" and when you unlock the Kheldian your response is "..a what now?"
ITF, Moonfire TF, one or two non-story-arc missions from contacts that you frequently just won't see on the way up. I think some clues on Tobias Hansen's story arc might mention Nictus too. That's your heroside exposure to Kheldians unless you're already a Kheldian yourself, and it can make the whole thing seem stapled-on rather than "Wow, I can be one of these guys now!" Give us more Kheldian-related content for non-Kheldians, let us get to know them like the other factions, and it'll be a lot more satisfying when you unlock your own whatever level it happens at.

Because you never needed to have a 50 on a server in order to make an EAT on that server. Hitting 50 on a Hero unlocked Kheldians for the entire account. Same for a 50 Villain unlocking VEATs for everywhere.
It was always that if you had a 50 Hero on Freedom, you could make a Kheld on Virtue.

I think it's entirely possible, Bill. Remember, a lot of people play MMOs - not every person pushes towards the end, or have a single "main" like you do with BillZ. I mean, people could be alters, badgers, or completionists (run all available content on the way up, turning off XP to stay in the right level range). Another possibility is people with less time to spend on CoX.
It isn't hard for me to imagine enough situations where people level much slower than we'd expect. I know what you said was just an opinion, just trying to maybe give some insight on the other side of the fence. [edit: Also, don't forget the people who just started playing the game, and quit before hitting 50. I know it took me a loong time to unlock VEATs. It's not because I couldn't do it, but because I have a much harder time enjoying CoV than I do CoH. I still only have 1 lvl50 villain, a Dark/Rad/Soul Corruptor.] [edit 2: Btw, I wanted a VEAT, too. I simply wasn't willing to spend all that playtime on a character I didn't enjoy just to unlock one. Further, I refused to do any PLing just to unlocked them. I didn't want to be "that noob" in an epic AT that wasn't well versed in CoV.] |
I even have a level 46 Corr, who *was* going to be my next project (getting ehr the rest of the way to 50) before they announced the new unlock at 20. Now I'm just happy that I can play with some other alts instead, and just go back to playing here occasionally when the mood strikes.

Hope you didn't spend any money doing that. Maybe it wasn't that way before, but now unlocking them on any server unlocks them everywhere (just checked on Justice where I have no 20s).

It would've been a major hassle, even during the 2 months (or so) when they had the "Free Server Transfers = 7/per week". And, I would've had to add more slots to the server(s) I wanted to create the HEAT's/VEAT's on.
Issue 3 changed it.

I'm quite patient, and there were a number of things we didn't know about how side-switching would effect existing SG's - we still don't know a couple things I'm want to know before I start moving toons around.
I may move some of them - once we get all the 'deets', some of them may just switch sides (on a couple servers where I ended up with both a Hero SG and a Villain SG), and the cap on number of total "base storage items" - may be a PITA!
But, the ability to Email stuff should relieve some of that pain = mailing stuff to Alts that can use it "now" as opposed to stashing it away for "later on".
And then of course - I heard (at some point?) that the Epic AT's would unlock at Lvl 20 with I17, so I didn't bother trying to hustle around transferring Toons during the "Free Server Transfer" periods. Especially without knowing the entirety of how GR is going to impact Side-Switching, SG Bases, etc.
We know a fair bit more now, but afiak last they said at PAX they haven't really settled on how some of the variables may end-up working between now and GR going Live.

I'm not a fan of the elitism that tends to surround these sorts of unlockables, and would rather they had just been available to everyone the moment they were put in the game. I feel the same way about unlockable weapons, costume pieces, capes, and auras. No matter how many times I've had to unlock such things myself, if they made them all available from the beginning to everyone starting tomorrow I wouldn't be "pissed" because IMO that's how it should have been from the get-go.

Not in my experience.
I dinged 50 on a hero on Pinnacle, and created a Kheldian on Guardian without moving the hero. This was in Issue 7.
Once your account reaches the milestone you can make one anywhere. As far as I'm aware it has always been that way.

After some thought about it, I think this was a good idea.
I may not have gone as low as 20... but I wouldn't have gone any higher than 32, and probably would've favored 25.
Thing is, these ATs are a draw, and the name of the game these days is: retention. If making these ATs more accessible keeps more people playing, then that's great. I can personally attest to the allure of the VEATs. I love playing mine. A lot. More people getting to experience these ATs will no doubt be a positive influence on activity levels.
And it's a good point that making them more widely available might up the priority of them getting some dev attention. I think the HEATs could use some.
The achievement factor of unlocking these Archetypes isn't something to casually disregard. This is a game, after all, so achievement and reward are part of the draw.
But we now have IOs and the upcoming end game content and incarnate levels, which, to me, are (and will be) far more significant than unlocking a prestige AT (which really isn't that hard to do these days).
So, in the end, as far as I can see, this is a net plus.
