effects of free server transfers on the forums/global channels

now that free server transfers are long since over and a sense of normalcy has begun to set in, i would like a show of hands of the people who made mass moves from less populated servers to the more populated who still view their home server's forum and/or global channels as 'home' and regularly view and/or post there. also, though i am not of this group, those that completely made the switch and no longer post on their old server's board or even view it.

did people have as strong of a connection to the actual server or did most people just move where their friends went? do you get the feeling of being a nobody in a huge city of strangers and sometimes feel the need to go where everybody knows your name? or do you generally make new friends super easy and have no problems severing old connections?

personally, i moved everything except my retired toons and one active toon that i felt compelled to keep on my home server in order to keep a connection to it and still read all my original server's threads and keep a tab open for it ingame.

I didn't use a single transfer. The only toons I have on another server are a few stragglers on Pinnacle that were all a) under 20 b) not very fun and c) I didn't have any room on Freedom anyways.

My original switch from Pinnacle to Freedom was definitely following friends, but that was many years ago, and at the time I had zero interaction with the Pinnacle community. These days, most of those friends have buggered off, and I've got much more of an attachment to the Freedom community, so I doubt I'll ever change my major server.

I have considered rolling some toons on Virtue, however. Partially for the experience, and partially because I don't feel like paying for extra character slots.

I reactivated my US account and moved some chars from Freedom to Virtue. But I'm pretty much a newbie US side anyway so the only motivation really was to have everything on one server.

I routinely play between Liberty and Infinity... and usually when the drama of one server kicks in, I find time to play on the other, with Protector being my fallback server. I wind up checking globals from all 3 servers, and really only used free server transfers to clear up space or find better fits for current projects. On one channel a few players moved to Freedom/Virtue for the larger player base, but still come back and chat on their original server, going so far to even recruit (poach) for teams on the other server.

Some of the once-hopping channels from Liberty I dropped when most of those players moved to Virtue. It didn't make sense to keep them even though those players really did focus on the game more so than the server associated channels (IMHO YMMV). After AE, I turned to the globals to find teams rather than hitting broadcast... After all the changes in server population, my SG's/coalitions seem deserted. The server channels feel more important now.

It's been a much better gaming experience (despite silly dramas), run into a LOT of quality players on 3 servers, plus my alt-aholic tendencies flourish with all the choices.

Only move I made was to take a single scrapper from Guardian to Virtue where he will have more opportunity for RP.

I also started a second account and used that to transfer some influence from Guardian to Virtue and some infamy from Virtue to Guardian, but those aren't toons I play otherwise.

I stayed on Freedom, but used the server transfer to send two lvl 50's of mine to each of my other servers, Champ and Pinn. Now I have a least one 50 on each of the servers I play on.

The whole process was good for a quick free name change too for toons that I felt needed it.

That's... A pretty specific request. Broken down to the specific conditions, it comes down to:

1. People who moved at all (I didn't, so I'm excluded from the rest of the steps)
2. Moved enough characters to constitute the moving of their server focus
3. Moved from a "less populated" to a "more populated" server.
4. Still monitor their old server channels and/or boards
5. Still consider their old server home despite not playing there much.
6. Visit General Discussions at all and are likely to participate in this discussion.

My thought is you're going to see very few people who cover all of the bases.

As for myself, as I mentioned before, I didn't move. Not a single character not a single time. And it's not because of some deep-seated loathing of character transfers or the people who practice them, but merely because I saw no need and no point. My characters are fine where they are, and there are more than enough people to irritate me on most servers, let alone enough to team with should I be so inclined.

I only transfered one character, but it was really to mule over some Set IOs and rare salvage to a new character at a new server. My brother, who doesn't play much anymore, noticed he had inherited leadership in a hero-side SG. I didn't have any characters there, so I made one to take it over. This was a couple of weeks prior to the Free Character Transfer grant, so my new character was at the point where I'd usually switch to Set IOs. Unfortunately, the inherited Base wasn't stocked and I didn't have enough Infl or Market slots to do some serious long wait buying. The transfered character was a lowbie hanging out at a personal SG where my storage bins needed thinning anyway.

The global channels I monitor hadn't changed. I already had some characters at this server villain-side. The rest of my characters are still where they are and I still keep an eye out for TF and PUG recruitment activity there.

Well, I didn't really go anywhere but I used a ton of transfers.

1) I loaded a bunch of influence on one toon on my home server and sent him on a tour to play Santa to my poor toons on other servers.

2) I used my fire/kin to PL a hero for every other server, just in case.

3) Then, they extended the free transfers and I used my fire/kin to PL a villain for every other server. (I used Dark Watcher's outdoor Nemesis map, now that RV has no level restriction.)

So, out of all my 'real' characters, only one used any transfers. He used 6 or 7 and ended up where he started from.

Pretty sure I only used two transfer tokens:
1) Moved an alt from Virtue to Freedom to run a TF with friends.
2) Moved the alt back to Virtue from Freedom.

i admit this isnt all that scientific of a probe, i was just trying to see how different people handled their new surroundings that this opportunity presented. i see nothing wrong with anyone who didnt move, actually i made no mention them simply because thats not what i did. i'm glad you brought those groups up, they may even be facing another set of issues i didnt even think of. for those that did though, especially in bulk, there might be some shared sense of almost being new to the game again. new SGs, potentially a new sea of global names on channels, new forum games... and all with a history of their own.

i havent been able to just jump in to a new crowd, i tend to be a silent observer until i feel i know whats going on and it hasnt happened yet.

I moved most of my toons from Justice to Freedom. I usually have no trouble making friends and this was in fact the case my global friends list is now split between the servers. I moved there to get away from people so i didn't follow friends it was a new start where i was relativly unknown so it was difficult, though i did know a few people from my time at PERC.

I do still maintain ties to Justice and keep 2 global channels up JU (cause i mod it) and tic's cause they are my family. The others are tabed though just not in my active window. I still check the Justice forums but not like i used too. I also will do tf's with my friends there, though the majority of my time is now on freedom which i now consider my home server, Justice will always be where my heart is though.

Why do you assume it's only that direction?

I moved several from the more to less populated (and one or two from about equal to about equal.)

Couldn't stand Freedom, moved a few off of there. Moved one I just wanted to finish up with some friends from Virtue to Victory. Shuffled one between "homes" from Pinnacle to Victory, another from Infinity to Victory.

Number moved TO Freedom or Virtue? *0*

Any "connection" felt to those? Nope.

I relocated to Freedom from Infinity. Mainly because pretty much all my ingame friends have their characters there. There's really no sense in having a level 50 on a server that you don't use. So I sent my favorite Infinity heroes to Freedom. Infinity was my home server once, but I've been playing Freedom mostly the last year or so. So the move came naturally once transfers became free.

A fun side effect of the transfer was that it allowed me to rename a few characters for free, too. If you transfer to a server where the name is taken, you need to rename. Do that and transfer back. New name, no charge. Of course, it only works when transfers are free.

Same, though my wife used the freebie pretty extensively, mostly heading from Champion to Freedom, rgh.

I used a bunch. I moved some less played characters from Protector to Virtue, Pinnacle, Triumph and Champion. Not because I plan on playing them more, just because I wanted more space on Protector. Too bad it was so long ago, I am almost full again.

I moved one villain to Freedom from Justice and started leveling some new characters there as many of my friends moved to Freedom.

But after I got a few characters to 50, mainly soloing or getting AE PLs from friends, I found I missed Justice's raids, TFs, and community in general. Nothing against Freedom. There's a lot of really cool people there. But I did feel like an outsider, whereas Justice makes me feel like Norm at Cheers.

I also missed my stuff. I have an SG and a VG on Justice with lots of stored enhancements and salvage and lots of "rich" characters that can help twink new ones. I felt like I had to start all over on Freedom.

So while I still play my Freedom characters from time to time, I went back to spending most of my time on Justice.

I only used a few tokens.

I did move one villain from Triumph to Freedom, to see if I could finish levelling her to 50. But then they announced that VEATs would be unlockalble at 20, so now there's no rush to take her to max level. I didn't really like Freedom, so I used another token to move her back to Triumph, where my SVG is located.

I moved a few more from Infinity and Liberty to Victory, rebalancing three SGs and freeing up spots for new I17 & GoRo heroes.

Since I stayed on my servers, I also stayed in those fora and globals.

a TON of people moved off of guardian including all the guys from plagued vg that i am with along with many of our coalitions...

i know i sent plenty of my 50s to virtue ( 7 or 8 of them)and freedom (7 or 8 as well)and we all much happier about it.my pvp toons are on freedom as well.

i still have like 10 lvl 50s on guardian but thats only cause i like my sg and base and wasnt ready to shut it down...but since the server barely exsists anymore it was the best move ever.still funny looking around p.i or gv and seeing actual people there.

I actually moved a couple heroes and 4 or 5 villains from Triumph to Champion. I did want to clear some space on Tri, but I also liked what I found on Champion when I started attending Tanker tuesday's on a regular basis so I now have 2 servers that fit my style. I pretty much stick to the globals of the server that I am on. If friends want me to switch over for something they just toss out a tell or jump on the vent.

I think the server transfers were great. People got to shop around a bit and take toons they are already invested, in instead of starting from scratch when they got where they wanted to go.

You dropped $20 to play a TF?

That was during the free transfers, so no.

I shuffled a couple characters around on the lower-pop servers, and I moved a character from Virtue to Infinity. Otherwise, didn't do any low-pop to high-pop transfers.
