Why would they develop CoH2 with GR right around the corner?
Edit: Good points have been brought up, I guess this has merit. I'm attached to my characters and had a kneejerk reaction to the thought of losing them. Can you blame me?

Why else would the hiring page mention "our next MMO?"
With the way many requests are met with skepticism about working with the current engine, which is licensed from a now distinct company, this isn't a surprise.
I do think that 2 should import current characters and content (even in oro form) though.
A game is not supposed to be some kind of... place where people enjoy themselves!

I would LOVE to have a desktop version of COH that would be mod-able like Neverwinter Nights. Imagine giving the player base not only a mission creator, but the freedom to "mod" to their hearts content. :::looks around for his GMAX notes:::

I'm going to go out on a legal limb and say "City of Heroes 2" will likely be considered too derivative of the trademark "City of Heroes."

Even if they're borrowing heavily from the resources they've created for the current CoH game, it'll still take at least 2 years to release a whole new game.

Interesting.
I'm generally of the opinion that MMOs and sequels just don't mix; it seems like the most likely outcome is the same playerbase split over two separate games.
But perhaps watching Asheron's Call 2 detonate has jaded me. If NCSoft is serious about this, let's hope they prove me wrong.

CoH is a good property with a loyal customer base and is the sole money-maker for a given company (Paragon Studios). If they feel that making a new engine is the best way to stay relevant and profitable, then more power to them and I wish them good luck!

I am just wondering if they will follow their pattern...and have the already customers....able to transfer their hard earned titles and characters and stuff to the new game...and if it will be some huge huge upgrade so to speak.
or if it is a brand new game....does that mean we would have to spend time leveling up from ground zero again...taking tons of time to collect the accolades and rewards and unlocking all the stuff we had to unlock before???....
I mean there was alot of things still planned for city of heroes....but if thats being put into the newer game instead....makes we want to stop playing and maybe try the newer version.....though i dont know if i will be able to deal with starting out from scratch again.
My own personal opinion for ultimate game design is to always have upgrades....so if a brand new version of something comes along....the old characters and such will be able to be transfered over....
I mean dont get me wrong....i could forsee an entirely new game engine and such for a game being made and the ability to transfer the character data from the previous game to the new one being possible....its been done in many games before...and considering characters are stored onthe server...it wouldnt be difficult to create a system of transfer...might not transfer everything....but it would keep alot of things....
I always wanted to be able to grandparent my characters and account one day....to maybe a younger generation....thought it would be an interesting concept....a 100 years down the line....the updates and expansions keep happening making the game alot different then it is today....and there would be old characters still there with differing powers and abilities then the newer ones in the game....

GAH!
No, if they start from scratch then nothing should be the same. The bare bones archetypes and city structure could be different. I imagine they would get rid of the horrid war walls. At the very least, the zones would all be redone, and exploration badges could easily be added, removed, or moved around. New enemies, different enemies, and removed enemies could all lead to different defeat badges. Task forces could be redone as well as the badge granting missions, or maybe a whole new system enacted. More badges that change and affect the accolades.
Perhaps they want to rebalance the accolade powers. Even if they don't, maybe the badges you got them with before don't exist anymore.
What if they remove powersets (They didn't get finished for the new engine)? Consolidate powersets (Katana and broadsword become one set with different animations)? Change them in any way? Your old characters would no longer be able to be transferred.
Maybe they'd look at the game entirely differently than before, and have a 100 level cap. Or they go back to a level 40 cap.
Basically, given that CoH2 should start from scratch, there's no guarantee that your old characters would be compatible with the new game.

At the Meet and Greet I attended in Boston recently, mentioning "City of... 2" would elicit a vague "I can neither confirm nor deny" type of response from anyone I spoke to from the dev team.
Global = Hedgefund (or some derivation thereof)
Like others have said... it takes years... so... that's the first part we need to keep in mind...
However, on to the subject of transferring/porting over existing characters...
It doesn't matter if the game is entirely different, it is still possible to grant an approximation of a player's/character's previous achievements.
The simplest form of which would be starting the CoH1 character off in CoH2 as advanced: Some percentage based system of advancement... how far along the scale of progression they are [CoH- level 1-50 = CoH2 advancement 0-100%]. Choosing powers/powersets/whatever the options would be... would just be open to the player to choose (Your blaster could now be an axe wielder, if you were to so choose).
Now...
All that being said...
It seems unlikely they'd want to allow a player to have completed advancement without playing (a single bit of) the new content.
That being said...
This team has always been pretty spiffy and loves the playerbase so much... Who knows what they might come up with.
As for myself... Its seems like a great move to make the CoH1 playerbase feel as though they are porting from one game to the next. Otherwise, as was said earlier, they could end up with a split population between the two games... and that could hurt the new title (Might not, but it could).
However, to what degree you allow players to have advanced within a brand new game... that's a tough tough call. Allowing grandfathering and initial advancement could turn off new/potential players.
Best idea could be... starting the new game on a level of power that matches CoH1 level 50.
What if CoH2 were more like World of Heroes... Or Universe of Heroes? (Galaxy of Heroes!)
A lowest level character is more like a level 50 CoH character...
And advancement puts people more on par with cosmic forces.
Of course... that too has problems... (Never mind the monumental development/design obstacles [although, could be totally worth it and immense]) as many people certainly enjoy playing a far-less-than-cosmic-level character.
It'd still be possible to accomplish this and include smaller/street-level heroes/criminals... But yeah... It'd be a bit tougher. Still, that could be the way to go, hehe.
Okay.. get working on that...
Level 1... Is level 50!!
Go!!!!!
Honestly... a sequel is a favorable eventuality...
It is either... a sequel one day...
Or a dead CoH.
With this team and the great run this game has had so far (And should continue for some time now)... I'd be happy to see them continue.
Let's hope we get a full virtual-reality/holodech version soon!
and round up everyone that knows more than they do"-Dylan
Blah blah blah, some stuff about porting your old characters.

Anyway, have you ever powerleveled a character to 50 and then tried to learn how to play/build it? It'd be like that, only with a potentially new combat/power system, a hundred times more complicated. If anything, pre-leveling would be a disadvantage.

The only thing I could seem the porting to us is veteran badges and maybe some "Legacy player" benefit. I doubt they'd let you bypass any of the new content by "pre-leveling" you.

I...think a CoH2, with the same kind of Dev team, would be awesome. But Im not giving anything past that, because at the moment its the hint of a dream, and possibly just a trademark placeholder.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

If CoX 2 is made on a brand new engine I would like to see it include functionality that would allow the existng playerbase to port over their existing characters as "Golden Age" heroes and villains. If, for whatever reason, you choose to keep your Golden Age character you can continue to play it but if you want to upgrade your character it would be cool to have a retcon feature that works kind of like respecs do now save for the fact that you would have to reselect your powersets and/or archetype and start at level 12.

I think that any sequel wields more power if it has some identity of it's own.

I like the name Galaxy of Heroes, implies a continuation of City of Heroes without having to name it City of Heroes 2. World of Heroes makes sense as well, its just too close to the juggernaut of MMOs and we don't want people to think we're "WoW in tights!"
Well if they are in fact making a coh2, it would be a really, really, really good idea to figure out some way for existing customers to transfer their characters to the new game in some manner.

They COULD however, let the oldest Veterans into Beta earlier to "grab-up" their character names before the general populace can "take-away" your favorite character's "moniker".
I for one, would look forward to playing an all-new and improved system from the ground up, but dread the thought of some of my "cool" names being used by someone else.
