I'd say it would be a better idea to bring your loyal customers with you by offering an opportunity to transfer their toons in some manner, even if no other mmo has done it before. CO followed mmo convention and look how well that turned out, lol.
You don't even have to look at CO. Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, and that soccer noise were all major flops by PlayNC in the last couple years. TR followed the MMO formula to a T and it lasted, what? 5 months? Lineage 2 to my knowledge still has never had more subscribers at any time than Lineage. Oh and how about Everquest 2?

There is no argument from what other MMOs have done, because the model right now is like shooting in the dark. The games that have started and stayed strong mostly share one thing in common: low hardware specifications. Not being a sequel certainly helps though.

The idea that new content with transferable characters (or any such in game resource) must be in the form of an expansion and not a new game is silly. The idea of transferable characters has crept, with varying levels of success, into most platforms and genres of games. Game creators aren't bound to some code of conduct that dictates how they spend their production money and what the final product will look like. All having players start with a blank slate is reduce the disparity between new and old players. City of Heroes has doused the problem of this disparity so well though, that any similar line up wouldn't suffer for it. At WORST it would suffer something similar to what was lovingly called AE babies in this game, where players have the levels and in game resources that do not accurately reflect their knowledge of the game (or ability to play it). However, people moving directly from one MMO to the next would likely adapt and know well enough to start over if they were disoriented.

@Gilia1
I play heroes on Champion.
I play villains on Virtue.

Heh... This is a bit silly, but, that's the point really...

An idea that just came to mind would be unlocking your transferred (And advanced) character through achievement in-game with another character.
Similar to unlocking an EAT.

Want your old characters from CoH1?
Transfer that character and then reach Level XX with any character and your transferred character is now unlocked with the full CoH1 to CoH2 conversion advancement (CoH1 - level 1-50 = XX-XX% of CoH2 advancement).

Again, I am not saying they will do any such thing, nor even saying that they should. I just enjoy exploring the options of making such an idea (As transferring characters into an mmorpg sequel) work, without messing things up.
This method would 1) not give players a huge advantage 2) not give advanced characters to someone who has never played any of the content

You can never make everyone happy, of course. Anyways, just throwing out an idea there, hehe.

Did anyone else look around a bit on the wesite the OP uses as his source of information? Go back 2 days to the interview with the Duke Nukem exec and tell me honestly that that's real.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

I may have missed it already being said, but I believe the most likely scenario would be a full restart, new characters. However, given the loyalty of the player base, I could also see the current CoX accounts carrying over into CoH2 (two games, one price!) like they eventually did for CoH/CoV. That way, new players could get the bonus of starting out with Veteran Rewards on the new game instead of having to start fresh. It would give you a benefit for having been with the game so long, but not something totally game-breaking.

just $0.02

People expecting to transfer characters just don't seem to have a reasonable evaluation of the MMO market... Every MMO is a pay to play beta for the first year, there is no end game content to speak of for months and months and months. Even Blizzard, the most (financially) successful MMO maker, develops content behind the curve of power players' advancement.

If you let the CoH playerbase migrate to CoH 2 it would just apply pressure to the devs to develop content that's slated for the backend of their development cycle. Maybe CoH2 will prove me wrong, but I seriously doubt it. The trend as of late seems to be slanted more and more towards selling the product before it's 'finished' and marketing its completion as ongoing support and expansion (for example, the Lich King wasn't in Wrath of the Lich King for what, a year and a half?).

As for verteran benefits carrying over, I don't really think it makes sense outside of something purely cosmetic, and even then it might deter new players. Would it increase the likelihood of return customers? Sure it would, but even the most loyal customers fade away eventually and I would think that the launch of a brand new game would be seen more as an attempt to build a new audience than pay lip service to the old one, no matter how faithful it's been.

The one thing I would like to see in terms of "character transfer" is a way of readily porting costumes, even if it ports as a "best match" instead of an exact copy due to new costume mechanics.

No need for actual mechanical character transfer, but being able to copy over your characters' looks would be nice.

Costume transfer sounds, at least, a realistic possibility, unlike many of the pipe-dreams in this thread.

Full character transfer? Vet rewards transfer? Get real people - those just aint gonna happen. Even Negrodamus could predict that.
