Overheard during Reactivation/DXP

There was the usual influx of players during the weekend, magnified by the Reactivation event and double experience weekend. I had TF or leveling groups pretty much the entire weekend and heard some telling things over and over again:

"I'd love to come back, but I can't afford to."

I heard this personally in group chat or tells from three or four different players who'd left the game and came back for reactivation. I saw it repeated a few more times in broadcast or global channels. It hints at something that I've suspected for quite a while; the rough economy is having a very large effect on the number of people who WOULD be playing.

NCSoft financial people: Aren't quite a bit of your Asian sales from people who pay daily or per session in net cafes? If you can get some kind of pay-as-you-go plan in place for CoH, you might be able to catch some revenue you're currently missing because some North American folks simply can't justify or budget $15 a month.

It also means that as the economy is now in a 'starting to recover' phase, it's an ideal time to attract players who suddenly have a bit of disposable income they're not used to. It would seem especially important when there are newer games intent on carving away from CoH's playerbase.

"Yeah, I played [competing game] for a while, but it really sucked. This reactivation weekend makes me realize what I was missing."

I heard this repeated at least once an hour as the inevitable end to the conversation that began, "Well, I switched to [competing game]..." The only time that players were in any way positive about those other games was when they were describing features that were also strong CoH features, such as a certain other superhero game's character creator. Even then, it was usually in the context of "But it was ripped off from CoH."

This illustrates an important facet of the 'City of' franchise's customer loyalty. The game trades heavily on its quality and featureset maturity. This will be an important subject to keep in mind as the game continues to age, especially when integrating new features into it. If the quality of the game degrades significantly for any given reason, it could have a larger effect than you might initially think.

"So what are people doing for exp these days? Are they still farming AE?"
"Only Dev Choice Missions work with DXP this time around."
"Really? Okay, I'll do those."

or
"Really? I'll just do regular missions then."

I heard this quite a few times in the course of the weekend from returnees. Current players griping about the most recent AE exploit plugs were over their tantrums by the time DXP started (or had moved on to another exploit). There was little or no whining or moaning about having to do Dev Choice missions to get DXP. The choice between regular missions and Dev Choice was a non-issue in every chat venue I monitored.

This tells me that the balance of reward-to-effort in Architect missions, especially those Dr. Aeon's been flagging for us, is just about right.

Personally, having been playing my lowbies through AE missions BEFORE the weekend, I think it may be just a hair on the low side, but so close to 'right' that it merits only minor tweaks.

It's been a hard, nasty road for those working to balance AE, but it looks like you're finally at the top of the peak, and have to maintain balance rather than try to create it where none existed. Good Job!

Good post. I enjoyed seeing yellow Freedom dots all weekend. (happy for you too, Virtue)

While playing this weekend gave me the enthusiasm to log in for hours on end again i did hear a few unfriendly people chat about the game unfortunately.

They were nearly all from returning players saying that they WONT resub until GR comes [they feel that i17 doesnt bring enough to them as a person], but the pleasing thing was that they all said they knew people who were saying the same thing. Not enough has changed in the game to warrant them wanting to come back but they will when GR comes.

So i dont think we'll see a lot of returning players now but least its more positive to hear that they are at least interested in returning for GR

Plus i hope they do, saw a few very old mates this weekend and was just nice and refreshing to see people i used to look up to as a young player

It certainly depends on how you measure recovery. If you measure by GDP, then the econonmy is recovering for the 2nd straight quarter. If you measure by unemployment...well...

Yep. 'Starting to recover' is a pretty broad descriptor there.

The most even handed economists (as opposed to those with an agenda to push) I've heard discuss it talk about it like we're right at the dog-leg part of the curve. It's still bad for a lot of folks, but various indicators like luxury spending are just starting to trend in an upwards direction.

The same speakers all mention that the last things to recover during most recessions are businesses in the financial sector, including banking, and that the last indicator that starts moving is total employment.

When I use it, I mean that NOW is the time to start planning for people to have a bit more money. Start reserving advertising slots, etc...

I'd love to see CoH have some sort of "pay as you play" type of system. Whether you pay x amount for y hours or something. I know my boss at the first job I had was always busy and maybe had 1-4 hours a month to play a game or two. He loved playing games/MMOs (he was the one that got me into AC2 when it launched ) but he never saw the justification for spending $15 a month when, like I said earlier, he'd play maybe 4 hours a month. If he could just use some other way of playing a MMO/game I'm sure he'd do it.

I can't say too much on this. I've seen people say, "CoH still doesn't have x?" Or have others that say that they have missed CoH...so...*shrugs*

Edit: It was also really awesome just to see/hear all the people that were back playing (even if only for the weekend) CoH. Almost every time I logged in I got in a team within a few minutes (with sgmates/coalition peeps and not just pugs)...man that's nice.

My guess would also include those that now subscribe to several MMOs at once, and are unwilling (at the moment) to add COH back into their budgets.

Very good post.

Sadly it will fall on the deaf ears of the black pebble that is NC marketing.

Well, they used to, until they fell through the hole in the geometry in Grandville. Haven't seen them since.

Yeah, they're the ones who force the devs into not telling us anything about upcoming content. Aside from that I'm not sure I've ever seen or heard of them doing anything.

Heh, I think the channels we watched may have been an anomaly Ion. I suspect they were skewed by the posts of a few people making jokes, or rather the same bad joke over and over and over.

"I can't afford to find $15 a month" is only the completely true reason in a very small proportion of the population who are truly living pay cheque to pay cheque. Most people who make those kind of comments likely can't justify the cost in terms of the value they get back from CoH/V. It's also a kind way of saying, "I'm just not that into you."

Personally CoH/V could probably drop its price down to $9.99 a month and attract some more players back that way, but I couldn't guarantee that the number of returning players would match the loss in revenue as it currently stands.

Ai, this sort of nails it.

One of the problems here is that the pay-scale on CoH already runs from ~$11 - ~$15 a month if you pay in advance versus paying monthly. I, personally, save up and pay for a 12month / 14month subscription which means I don't have to worry about setting aside $15 each month, nor worry about the subscription dinging the bank account at the wrong time.

There is the empirical evidence from Sega that some gamers will play some MMO's just because those MMO's have a lower monthly cost: e.g. Phantasy Star Online

Ergo, I think that most MMO's could probably afford to decrease prices over-all.

However... in a niche game like City of Heroes, when it's the only game that offers this kind of experience, it's a bit of a moot point. If you really like to play the... ante up and pay up. If the cost of a happy meal is what's keeping you from playing each month, well... maybe this isn't the game for you.

Good grief, where in the world do you live where a happy meal costs $15?

All kidding aside, I saw a couple of people mention that they were back simply for the free weekend and then would likely return when GR hits in July.

Another had been gone for 6 months and when they got back in and started playing they decided to re-sub.

I actually can't remember seeing anyone mention that they came back and were reminded why they stopped playing in the first place. Which to me is a huge win for CoX. It's inevitable that people leave from time to time, but when most of them usually return, there has to be SOMETHING good about the game and/or the community.

Coming up on 6 years and this game, despite the competition, is still going strong. I look forward to another 6 years.

And then 6 more after that, to be followed by an additional 6...

Okay, point. Badly phrased. It was supposed to be a point that there's not a whole lot of difference between $15 a month and $10 a month if you are paying each month as it comes. If $5 is the breaking point for somebody's income on a consistent per monthly basis... I'm not entirely sure they should be playing an MMO.

Granted, I'm saying this having spent years supporting Cable TV and Cable Internet where there was an endless parade of people with either or both service(s) that couldn't afford things like:
  • a new pci network card. The network card's port had gotten buggered up and the customer flat out said they didn't have the money to buy a new network card... although they were paying for the fastest HSI service Cox offered. For those interested, the buggering up of the old network card involved peanut butter. No. I didn't ask WHY there was peanut butter in the network card port.
  • batteries for the remote. Customer's account had the premium cable service (StarZ, Showtime, HBO, all of the HD channels), and when told to replace the batteries in the emote, exclaimed they didn't have money for batteries.
  • A portable radio. This is one call I wanted to get a copy of. During Hurricane Katrina I took a call from a customer who had both the fastest Internet Service and all of the optional Cable Services. As there was a freaking HURRICANE going on, of course both services were off. The customer called in on their cell phone, desperate for us to send a truck out... in the middle of a freaking HURRICANE... to fix the cable service. Why? Because according to the customer their cable TV and cable internet was the only way they could keep track of the weather. When asked what happened to the battery powered radio that anybody in a freaking HURRICANE should have, the customer replied that they couldn't afford a portable radio.

The point of these anecdotes is that they have generated an inherently low opinion of people buying, or thinking about luxuries, that duck behind the well if it was $5 cheaper or I can't afford that. If $5 buck item purchases are the make or break point on things like video games, well, there are larger issues at hand that need to be dealt with. Namely food, shelter, water, medical supplies, and basic utilities.

They must have hired people who used to work for Commodore's marketing department.

That went over all your heads now, didn't it?

Even if measured by unemployment the economy is recovering. Unemployment still rises during a recovery but at a slower rate.

It would be interesting to see how a pay as you go plan would work (capped at $15 a month). I'd certainly signup.

I personally think that anyone that says they can't afford it is simply making an excuse. It's roughly 50 cents a day, at full price. Buy one less soda a day from the vending machine. And if you "only play 4 or 5 hours a month?" If you go to the movies twice in a month, you get roughly 4 hours of entertainment (usually less), and pay more.

It's an entertainment expense.

My take on DXP weekend, and this hasn't much to do with how the game overall is doing, is that I'm more convinced now that the devs must be at least considering server merges.

Sure, Virtue and Freedom were in the yellow the whole time, but I was playing on Champion, and it was dead. I hardly ever saw other players. I could walk into Wents' in Talos and find a whole one other player at prime time. When I made the new DP Blaster there was no one in Outbreak. I had the place to myself until I was halfway through Isolator.
