Oh, sorry, got distracted there. In light of this latest sad news, I have just deleted all my characters, and I now sit forlornly in my sackcloth and ashes. Thank you Dispari for opening my eyes to the sad inevitability of the end.

I agree with the OP, but I think the wrong symbolism is being used. It's not the prominence of the hero's picture, but the name.
First we had Statesman. What is a Statesman? Someone who is able to speak to the people, bring them to his cause, but also someone who is certain that their way is the only way. So we began with someone who knew what we wanted better than we did and was able to convince enough people he was right to keep the game going.
Then we had Positron. Which sounds like "positive". Now everything is all good and happy, and we all think positive thoughts and get along. Players are kept happy (or as happy as any group of disparate people can be) and everything is brightness and sunshine.
and now...War Witch... War is conflict, horror, destruction... While the cause may not be, war itself is just evil and cruel. Witch, well, that is often used as a substitute for a similar sounding word the forums will filter. This is our new lead, and proves beyond a doubt that this spells doom for us all....

I've been here a while now, but am a relative late-comer. I just have to say how happy I've been that in a game going on six years old, the dev staff is fairly big, active, and creating new stuff, not just maintaining old stuff. We can disagree, sometimes jokingly, sometimes a bit heatedly, about what that new stuff is; but there's been sixteen issues in just less than six years, another one around the corner, and a substantial expansion just over the horizon. I'm happy.

Now our lead dev is War Witch who isn't even in the image!
This is obviously symbolism meant to imply the fading interest in the game and the loss of interest by the devs. This is a message by the devs themselves that they no longer care about the game! The game will be shut down within the year, and this is PROOF! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
