Not overly exciting (Unless it freaks you out), but pretty cool.
One night, I was driving and an animal ran out in the road in front of me. I stopped the car without hitting it and saw, in my headlights, an opossum.
They're a bit creepy looking in general (In a weird/cute sort of way), but...
Suddenly, I noticed that the animal's body was CRAWLING all over itself...
For just a second, I thought it was diseased/infested with something...
But then I realized it was a bunch of her own babies crawling along her back.
After the initial freakiness, it was very cute/endearing... but also a bit disheartening considering the mother was not doing such a good job crossing the street.
Just thought I'd share...

This states they live on their mother's back until they can hunt, so I can only assume that means they live on her back until they figure out how to eat her. Doesn't it just seem like they would?
Unlike the human animal who is better known for living on both parents' backs until eventually desiring to kill their father and... do other things... to their mother.
(Hey, it is a common mental facet, according to some psychologists... So, don't lookit ME like that!!!)

See some spiders are so intelligent they can learn to type and participate in internet forums.

The picture is actually our Goliath Bird Eater on holiday, he was taking part in the Worlds Strongest Spider contest held on the Isle of mann every year and that was the judges measuring him up for his stat card, it appears on the 'web' every year...

Turns out I was misremembering the fact that wolf spiders were merely agressive. I was just wondering about the type of venom.

Sounds right, about the Daddy Long Legs.

The big reason, I think, that the widows are feared is a) that coloring is kinda a danger sign to most people, instinctively, and b) the younger ones are more dangerous. Adult venomous insects ration their venom. Immature ones tend to spend it all in one bite. Also, kids tend to get everywhere, and thus are more likely to get bit, and smaller bodies have less mass to diffuse the toxins.

Although, are you sure you want to post naked pictures of me here? I mean, this is a T-rated game after all.

I prefer using back-mounted laser cannons. I do have an unhealthy appetite for SPAM, however.

well it's better than a spider in a boob tube...it's just unnatural I tells you...

So how did you place in World Strongest Spider this year...last year I heard you placed second to Henrinch Von Stretchylegs from Bulgaria...did you manage to take home the trophy this year?

One more to add to the collection.

Oh congradulations!

It's a mighty fine trophy...and since Golaith Bird Spiders don't build webs, I imagine you've got a nice log to place it on and show it off.

It's nice to see the World Strongest Spider contest got over the drugs scandel of a few years back and is once again the top contest of Spider strength in the world.

Not like it was a very well-kept secret that some competitors were using illegal substances ...

In before that youtube video. You know what I'm talking about.

I am mostly indifferent to spiders, although they lose points if they surprise me.

My wife however, is performing an experiment in evolution. She is attempting to see, if given enough generations, they will develop the skill of not being near her . Except for jumping spiders. They don't move like other spiders; they look like they were animated by Harryhausen. Also, while we know they are effective hunters, they just seem so inept. Watching a jumping spider attempt to navigate a window screen is good for several moments of amusement.

I hate spiders.

By the way though, according to Wikipedia (with citations) Wolf Spider bites only cause mild discomfort.

What do you have against Goliath birdeaters?
Or were you referring to one of the anti-spider posts? Silly arachnophobic bigots, i agree.

(After a few dozen posts have been made in a thread when you post a fairly generic reply without quoting the post you're responding to it pretty much means that anyone who posted before you could be the target of your bile.)

That's how I prefer to handle them. I've gone out of my way to kill them if I see one. Any and all spiders give me the willies, I don't care how docile or cute other people say they can be; if they are found inside my home I will kill them with extreme haste, hate and bile.

One, of the several creatures named "daddy long legs", only one is actually a spider, and none of the others even have venom sacs. The one that does actually has uncommonly weak venom for a spider that preys on insects; while no attempt has been made to test its effect on mammals, much less humans, it seems to me that a venom that has an extremely weak effect on insects would not be fatal to humans. Certainly not anywhere near "most deadly" spider venom in the world.

Two, MythBusters had an episode where they investigated the myth, and they found that the daddy long legs fangs are, in fact, capable of puncturing human skin.
(Though they do have uncommonly short fangs)

So, not only is it false that daddy long legs venom is particularly dangerous to humans, it's also false that they're incapable of injecting us with the supposedly dangerous venom.

Really? Wow, that's pretty cool.

I once held a Bird Eating Spider at a zoo when I was younger. The one thing that still stands out to me is how light they are despite their size.

I actually happen to like spiders and other things that most people fear such as snakes. I also used to have an Emperor Scorpion as a pet, which on a side-note also keeps its children on its back much like the wolf spider in the video does.

I do however have an irrational fear of oversized catepillars! Especially hairy ones! I don't introduce them to the 2D world because they are overfilled with bodily fluids so I instead introduce them to my cat, who I then stay away from and refrain from allowing it to lick or touch me for about 72 hours.

Actually, it was targetted at the OP, and was in jest, I just left off the smilies indicating emotion. To be honest, I... Ahem, forgot to quote the text when I posted, and left for work immediately afterwards. I dislike spiders as a rule, they give me the willies, with their... Hair, and their... Legs! And fangs and venom and the way they move and... Ohmahgodohmahgodohmahgod...*hyperventilates*

Just kidding, I don't like them, but have an understanding with them, they stay away from me, and I stay away from them. I've even watched a garden spider weaving a web in rapt fascination before (from behind the safety of a screen door, granted, but... Non-aggresion pact and all.)

Seriously, bile though? Honestly, you don't think I'd literally hate someone over a harmless forum post, do you? I'm not that much of a jerk. :-p

It's about the size of my hand... fun!

I like spiders. More spiders mean less insects around here. In the summer, I never clean off the spider webs if I can get away with it. Spiders are on my list of summer allies, along with songbirds, frogs, and other things that prey on insects. Things that prey on the above are enemies, though. Stupid hawks, storks, and cats.
