Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches are cute and interesting, spiders *shivers* NO WAY! bleh
i will concede that actually having most spiders and centipedes on me triggers a reflexive action resulting in sudden extreme acceleration of the critter when i'm not forewarned. Dangerous spiders and centipedes creep me out when in close proximity, but not so much at a remove.

Hey, is anyone else a Car Talk listener? In their January 16th episode they had a story about a pregnant Madagascar Hissing Cockroach that accidentally got loose in a car, then did what pregnant roaches do. Hilarity ensued.

On a video screen that mother spider with little spiderlings are just adorable.
However, if I saw that thing crawling on the floor, I would just go "Oh gawd what is THAT?"

Also, I had found out that I had been living with a spider for at least a few weeks when I checked the insides of my then unused reading lamp. The poor thing escaped when I turned the lamp on. D:

First off, spiders are arachnids. Arachnids <> Insects.

I love spiders. One of my favorites is called a Spinybacked Orbweaver. It has a chitinous shell on its back, and the patterns on the shell often look like a skull's face. Here's a pic:

They aren't that big; the largest one I've ever seen was about 1/2 inch across. The white parts can also be colored red, orange or yellow. They're really cool, I usually find a few around my back yard every summer. They make large webs, sometimes up to 4 feet across. I always leave them be.

So? Just becuase an animal or insect has venom, whatever kind, doesn't mean that it WILL bite.

One of my favorite websites was started as an art project... photographing insects: What's that Bug? It soon became an incredible source for insect identification, as people from around the world submitted their own pictures of all kinds of bugs; moths, beetles, caterpillars, wasps... you name it. The Arachnid pages are quite extensive. And they even have a page dedicated to Unnecessary Carnage.

I usually hate spiders. However, in the past, we've had several Wolf Spiders that have gotten in to the house and become pets of mine. I had one wolf spider I named Harley. For the short duration of her existence, she would sit on my shoulder or crawl my arm. Never once did any of them bite me.

My rules for spiders in my world are simple. If you peacefully coexist with me, we get along great. If you show the slightest sign of aggression, you forfeit your life. So far, everyone's happy...except a few smears on the wall...

And it's fairly common for venomous animals to use dry strikes when biting to conserve their venom even when they do bite. Venom usually represents a fairly large metabolic investment, so many animals avoid using theirs when trying to repel threats.

Even many critters with reputations for aggressive behavior can be docile if handled properly. This of course does not apply to things like Box jellyfish. The most complex of jellyfish, they also have the most dangerous venom.

You can color them? Must take a lot of patience and a VERY small paintbrush... but, what if I wanted a blue one? Can I have a blue one? PLEASE?

Ummmm...that was my point. The spider in the video wasn't dangerous.

A family friend had a wolf spider pet of sorts...it had a corner in the laundry room window where it sat peacefully. She's give it flies when she could...the thing became pretty comfortable with her, it was kind of cute. It would actually crawl into her hand. The thing got pretty big, too, so it must have been older. It was about 2" wide, legspan of course.

Harley loved crickets and flies. She was about 2" tip to tail, about a 1/4" wide, and had a leg span of about 2-3". From what I've seen around my house over the years, most of them are very large compared to what I read about.

BTW, I do have a catch and release policy for those peaceful enough to allow me to transport them to the backyard.

Last year I had a huge ant problem. Most of them would come into my room through a crack between the bricks and the bottom of my window.

Then one day I saw a cluster of dead ants in the region I normally saw them enter. Then I saw a tiny little spider rush in carrying a dead ant, drop it on the window sill, and rush back out. While the dead ants were a bit annoying, it was hilarious to watch (and lasted about a month).

It doesn't matter if they're the cutest things, a forest of tiny living insects scurrying about is not cute.
Arachnae

Some highlights:

Quote:
slightly taller forehead marked by six small red spots that are, in reality, eyespots geared toward detecting motion
Quote:
The lower body appears very spider-like, save that the legs are proportionally much thicker than a spider’s leg.
Quote:
a very friendly species, though somewhat too tactile for the comfort of many
Quote:
touch is considered a very important sense to the Arachnae without having the intimate connotations that other races place with touch, and they rarely do anything without shaking hands, hugging, thumping, clapping, kissing or otherwise involving their body with the other person's.
Yes, I made this race to play with latent arachnaphobia.

Oh...and, yes, they are genetically compatiable. No, I can't even begin to figure out the mechanics behind that. Just say "shapechanging spells" and leave it.

Quote:
Web Born (Heritage Feat)
Prerequisites: Non-Arachnae at 1st Level, Arachnae at any Level
Benefit: Choose an intelligence based skill, you may reroll that skill once per encounter.
Description: Arachnae-blooded characters have often funneled their inherited talent into very specific fields. Full-blooded Arachnae rarely find blanks in their knowledge, but some have specialized into a field such that they have even greater ability to find answers.
Special: Non-Arachnae with this feat are considered to be Arachnae for the purposes of using Items and Powers.
Appearance Effects: Arachnae-blooded characters have pure-black eyes.

This is my policy as well. And that video didn't particularly bother me.

However, I don't even want to see a freakin' roach. Beetles, spiders, snakes, centipedes, flies, ants, I can handle armies of those over a single roach.

depends on species...a lot of spiders don't survive the birthing process, so they tend to be dead before the babies hatch....

others lay eggs and leave....

wolf spiders are one of the few (comparatively) maternal species...

oh, btw, widows quickly become an infestation if you're not careful, had rain drive them into my apartment once a few years back.....REALLLY fun time cleaning the apartment after a friend of mine found five widows and egg sacks on a suitcase of mine (had to throw it out)

Widows are also blind. They rely on the vibrations of their webs to tell them where their prey is. This is why they are also shy and reclusive, preferring to lie in wait for their prey as opposed to actively hunting for it. Widows rarely bite unless they are physically disturbed or assaulted.

Their bite is venomous, but not as deadly to humans as rumored (though can be quite dangerous for small animals). In actuality, Daddy Long Legs have a more powerful bite when percentage of venom is compared (though Daddy Long Legs are generally considered harmless to humans... something about how they are unable to puncture our skin, if I recall).

But what if you eat them? You know, thinking they're... uhm... candy dots with legs or something. Is their venom very dangerous then?
