Potential Difficulties with the New Updater
If it's not working correctly now, it'll continue the same way until it is sorted by yourself. NC have finished updating the updater.[/QUOTE]
I cannot even begin to say how wrong this is. They put out an update that makes their game unplayable on my computer and it is up to me to get it working?!?!?!?!? That is beyond ludicrous. I HAVE submitted a ticket, I HAVE tried calling, I HAVE tried every option others on this forum have suggested. Again I uninstalled the game and can now not even re-install it. I even tried the procedure that Ultima Shadow suggested but once I have the CoH_EU_ Setup running it just crashes like when I tried the other re-install

So yes, it is up to you to get it working as they aren't psychic and don't know what YOUR issue is. If you have sent a ticket then you will get a response soon enough.
When your updater crashes, does it create a file called "CohUpdater_UI_Win.dll"?

No it doesn't create any file. Keep in mind that I uninstalled the game. So there is nothing in the CoH file except an icon for CohUpdater and one for Uninstall. I click the CohUpdater to start the install and it crashes. I am currently trying a re-install from my CoV DVD.
Same problem when I try to install from the DVD. Once it launches the updater it immediately crashes and says "cohupdater.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Under error signature in the report the ModName is cohupdater.exe Dont' know if this is significant or not.
What operating system are you using?
I'm curious as to why you still have an uninstaller if you've uninstalled it. Try running it again and see what it does.

there is an uninstall icon because the game client gets installed. then the game needs to update and at that point when it attempts to connect to update is when all the problems occur
If you have the game installed (just wanting to update now) then check your CoH folder to see if you have a "cohupdater.prv cohupdater.new and CohUpdater_UI_Win.dll" files when the updater crashes.

I am using XP pro.
I just took all CoX files off my computer and will tell you step by step what I am doing.
Ok ... no CoH folders in program files or any where else.
Installed the game from the CoV DVD
After install it goes to the updater
message on bottom says checking updater
updater closes then restarts itself. Upon restart it immediately crashes and I get the error box. cohupdater has encountered ... blah, blah blah.
The coh file now has both cohupdater.prv and CohUpdater_UI_Win.dll. No cohupdater.new although there is a "cohupdater" icon and a "CovUpdater" icon

Delete the cohupdater.prv and any other updater that isn't the one you're using but keep the .dll
Run the updater again. It may appear to still not be working (disappears for awhile) and then see what it says.

ok I deleted the cohupdater.prv and the "cohupdater" once i click the CovUpdater it says updater not found. So apparently that is just a link to the cohupdater with a CoV Icon. So I deleted the CovUpdater.
That just leaves "cohupdater" and "CohUpdater_UI_Win.dll" there are no other updater files in the folder.
When I run the cohupdater it immediately crashes and I get the error box. Again ModName is "cohupdater.exe"
still having problems working fine last night and now same probles again failed to rename error keeps comming up operating on windows xp ive uninstalled an reinstalled came back on went to make a brew got back had been disconected and same problem is happening again am ready to start screaming DOOOOOOOOM! FOR THE EU! in a min and give up on the game all together after 3 1/2 years of playing this is how im repaid feels like a kick in the teeth if im honest! and with double xp looming round the corner i dobnt wonna walk away but im realli fustrated with this ****!

I have absolutely no idea what that means. I've only got a limited amount of knowledge about this and i've never come across that error before. I've just had a quick scan through this thread and it looks like you're the only one getting that error.
I think the tech team are going to have to help you with that, sorry.
If at the moment, you just want to connect so you can play for now (short term fix) you could use the US updater (which appears to run fine) to download the game.
You could then copy the files to your EU folder and do the updater by-pass method to at least get you in-game while you're waiting for a response.
I don't know if that could be an option for you as well Fatal?

not an option for me since I uninstalled I need the updater to get to the latest version of the game. when I rename cohupdater -> cohupdater.exe I can get it to run but it will not connect. I am up to try #81
Yeah, renaming the file to .exe does cause it to hang.
Here is a link to the US updater. If you download it, click to install and point it to your EU CoH folder it will download every update that you need and apply it to your files.
When it's finished updating, you can then look at doing the updater by-pass with the CityofHeroes.exe.
There's no reason we can't get you back in-game before the end of the weekend.
[Edit] I've been assuming you're having troubles connecting to the EU servers Turbo but i have just this second realised you're probably on the US servers.

yes US servers
Well it does seems something weird is going on anyway. Two days it started. went to this thread and did everything up till re-installing nothing worked. Then I re-installed the game yesterday and I could play it yesterday. Closed the computer for dinner intending to come back in the evening when I did. Same problem as friday. It did say it was trying to update to prv again, but i couldn't finfd the prv anymore. Played another game yesterday so not to waste my entire weekend. Closed the computer for my nightrest. Just got switched on the computer and NOW i can go into COH again for some reason. I don't know what's going on. It just doesn't make sense. One moment I can play one moment I cannot. Everything what's been told on this thread either doesn't worl or only temporarely it seems.
I agree with some posters. I pay for playing the game not fixing the devs issues. I realise I am apparently of of the few with this problem. But it is very annoying as I am not a computer expert. I am not an idiot I can after play the fairly compently. I am not gifted in solving the technical problems
This problem gets weirder. I have both live and test on this PC. Test was setup for the closed beta test. As such I just copied the files to a new folder and renamed.
Now I have no problem with test at all. But everytime I want to play on live after a PC shutdown I have to delete files and rename cohupdater.new

im on the EU server- union and this is getting rather *&^% taking/.
evertime i shut my computer down, reboot it and play the game i have to rename. del. rename del etc the files before the uploader is working..what is going on here.

The problem we have here is that it didn't affect EVERYONE. So while yes, it is affecting you, it's not like NC just sent out a poor update. There's obviously something that conflicts on certain set ups.

Given that this has a very wide-reaching effect across a number of different platforms and different Operating Systems, it smacks of incredibly poor quality testing by NC. Their official input says only one OS is affected and it has affected many users on all the platforms they offer their game on.
It's not the fault of the users and NC have been very lax at best, and incompetent at worst.

Last time I logged in without any problems was Thursday. Since then, had the same problem ie: renaming it, shut down, rinse, repeat, mumble...
And NOW it is making my PC reset completely, I have run a number of checks and it is definately not my PC in any way I can honestly figure.
When I log into the game, after a short while it crashes completely as if I'd hit the reset button (I didn't by the way. )
I would reinstall but I don have the installer anymore and not sure where to download it from?
*shakes fists at the air*
Yeah, I keep fixing this too every day or so. I would not like this to be a persistent part of my CoH experience funnily enough.

back from work and tried to play again today, and low and behold another 3 hours of downloading and updating this is getting beyond a joke! think we all need to thank nivene for her help as she seems to be the only one who gives a crap about the player base. to the rest of the devs at paragon studios- never mind trying to get another issue out and an expansion fix the god damn game thats already here! or you minght find that there will not be a lot of people that want to re-subscribe or continue with the game if this is what the future has for us!
now im realli ******* angry just finished updating and downloading updater as usual as soon as timer hits 0 and im about to click next to actually get back into the game the updater crashes and now its peek time in the uk internet has slowed way down and its ''fixing files'' and has an ETA of 5+ hours im just about at my wits end and just about ready to write the game off!! my job has weird hours so ive had maybee about 6 hours to play over the weekend and its been busted and now tried to do the same on sunday evening off for a quiet nite and its ****** still! after fixing it 3-4 times still havin **** with it grrrr well peed off now
