Potential Difficulties with the New Updater
No you're not the only one. I am a simple user of computer and not an expert I've tried to add CoX to the list of exceptions on my firewall, guess what message I am getting: Windows Firewall cannot add City of Heroes to the list of exceptions (translated from Dutch). Thank you for that solution. Should I switch of my firewall entirely then, oh but then i risk virusses and all. Do I want that? NO!
So I am working to find a solution which works for me, caused by a change by the devs. Thanks devs fort wasting my precious leisure time doing something I absolutely hate. It is not I can ask a dev to come to my house and look what I probably have done wrong. Which is what I do at work if something doesn't work.
So please give me a solution which works....

Also, if you are somehow forced into reinstalling now, it's recommended NOT to use any installation discs that you have because they would contain the older version and would have to eventually be converted and redownload the current patch version of the game again anyway. Follow the link to download the new updater directly instead.

Is there a way of getting the updater to work for the EU please? I've tried all this and NOTHING is working.
![]() Edit: For EU peoples this should work.. 1. Go into the folder where CoH is, for example c:\program files\city of heroes 2. Delete the .prv file in there as per instructed by TheOcho 3. Rename the cohupdater.EU to just cohupdater (if you're in Vista click all the appropriate YES buttons as per normal) 4. Right click and run as Admin if in Vista, or just double click cohupdater 5. When it asks where to put the files (as it's now wanting to install the US version) just say NO! and Cancel.. quit out of the Updater. 6. Go back into the program folder and rename the file back to cohupdater.EU and run it again. Hopefully that should work! |

Dang it.. shut down my laptop when I went to bed last night after fixing the Updater so that I could get in to the game. Now I try and log in only to discover that the Updater doesn't work anymore. Have now just re-named the cohupdater.eu.new to cohupdater.eu.exe and that's fixed it for the time being. If, after a restart, that no longer works i'll have a go at downloading the uploader that Niviene posted..

I had trouble yesterday and this morning. Reinstalled the game and played the whole afternoon, closed the computer for dinner and the same problem is back again.
Ok need to hear from someone official what to do for the European costumers.
This needs to be fixed ASAP. I am not wasting my weekend on the problems caused bu the devs. They should provide us with an easy to use solution which works all the time and not just temporarely.

It didn't work, then it does after reinstalling the game and now it doesn't anymore. It just doesn't make sense.
That's just the updater, not the entire game which is what I'm after but cheers

The updater is the only way to download the game. There's no direct link.

these are good news to all of u, who are victims of this new updater/patch like me.
You suffered through multiple, horrorfying long time needing ties to fix the prob and download and patch new!!
I had the same prob like many of u: xp, downloaded always USversion, renamed, verified, renamed again, followed all suggestion at boards but nothinn really worked.
Kallandras fix got me a while ingame but after a crash i had the prob again.
Then i deinstalled all and manally deleted the left data from CoX and the installfolder and the registry(don do that if u used to it).
After that i followed theOchos instrucktion to load the CohUpdater.EU.exe from FTP servers, but that dont worked 2.
Cleared all data from CoX again and tried the other EU updater versions from FTP and look!!! IT WORKS !!!
and i promise u it really does, i reloged several times now to test it and made a servertransfer and created a new toon( always logged off to desktop and started CoX new, no problems anymore!!

Run it, put ur data from cossies stories, clues, etc. into the install and play and enjoy, u dont need to rename anything or do something else.
(The best way is probably really to clear the PC off all left CoX data manually after deinstall ur current version!
U can also try only to delete your actual Coh.exe and the CohUpdater.EU.exe and copy the CoH EU Setup.exe instead into your install folder and run it to verify to correct version. BUT THIS I DONT HAVE TESTET and idk if then at relog from desktop the prob will appear again.)

Ok so after trying everything I have read in the 2 threads on these forums I still couldn't log into the updater. I also could no longer bypass the updater and play because it now says I am not running the correct version of the game. So I uninstalled and attempted to re-install. Of course every time I try to run it I still need to update and the updater closes right away and i get the message "CohUpdater encountered a problem and needs to close." I only have 2 days a week I get to play and now after spending the whole morning trying to fix it I am worse off then when I started. This is typical of why NCsoft has lost so many customers. First of all I shouldn't have to be troubleshooting to make their game work. I pay my money and should expect them to provide me with a game that works. Additionally putting out an update that causes so many problems should never have happened, don't they test this stuff? I am about to get on the phone with them and they better get this resolved immediately.
Oh yeah it is Saturday ... they are closed. Man am I STEAMED!!!
Well, I have followed the 'official' fix and it doesn't work for me. The only thing that HAS worked is completely uninstalling and re-installing the game. CAn anyone suggest what I must be missing out in the fix? Even after re-installing, if i turn the game off for a short time but keep the PC on, and THEN try to start game - the updater gives me the same problem and it all starts again. As you can see, im not very techie so any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, is this just happening currently because NC SOft are still playing with the updater or will this always happen from now on?
As the above poster says, this seems to be a poor show on the part of NC Soft and I too have 2 days to play a week most of the time, and this weekend has done more to put me off playing the game than anything else in the last 2 years. Thoroughly fed up with it.
it apears i was using the US updater,trouble is i am not very pc technically minded and messed up totally,i re-installed then still had to download from the link rent listed,which tbh should have been posted by a mod immediatly,shows that some players know more than the devs,
