Potential Difficulties with the New Updater

Done that and it holds between 1 and 3 reboots. Then back where I started

hi guys the way i got it done was to create a dummy file in notepad called cityofheroes.exe this is just a blank notepad document and cityofheroes.exe as the save title and saved it to the folder where my coh shortcut is worked fine and had no trouble since on xp comp and the widows 7 comp

Suppose I should be thankful I have my regular CoX working, but now I can't get my test CoX to work. No matter what I delete, rename or download I get the failed to rename error message.

Running on XP here. Any suggestions?

Ok - ive fixed it twice and its broken AGAIN!

It is starting to get rediculous

Again its looking for the US updater file not the .eu one! Please can they fix this or roll back to the old updater until they have a proper fix for this

Edit - the fix I use is:
* Go to the cohupdater.eu file
* Rename it cohupdater
* Run the file
* When it asks to install the US version, select no and choose a random place
* As soon as it starts to install cancel it (you may have some files to delete in the random location you chose)
* Go back to the cohupdater file
* Rename it back to cohupdater.eu

Now when you run it, it should work. However this is a temporary fix - I have had to do this fix THREE times now

Deja vu.. every time i restart my computer i get the "Failed to rename" error! I have to either rename the .new file to a nice .eu.exe file.. or delete the .prv and change the name of the updater to the US one, then back to the EU one after it's tried to install... or i download the updater AGAIN!

Nice work devs, which genius wrote the code on this update?

I managed to get in briefly last night but after logging out and remembering I needed to check the market it went back to giving me the same error that the application is already in use. If I rename the US updater connects just fine and wants to know where to install to. When I go back to a .EU naming it just brings up the error again.

I sat for 30 mins trying all the fixes in this thread before I got on and then 15 mins after trying to log back in at which point none of them worked at all.

So glad I decided to pay for GR preorder on the crazy assumption I'd actually be able to log in this dxp weekend...

Have any of our community tech guru's come up to with an alternate workround as at current I'm not able to log in at all?

try keeping a copy of both cohupdater.exe & cohupdater.eu.exe in your game folder, don't just rename the EU version (works fine in XP anyway).

There is no fix if you ask me.. The updater does whatever it wants.. Today i got the same ridiculous .prv error, but there was NO .prv file to delete.. Followed the process again and again, but nothing happened..

I usually don't try to be rude or anything, but let's face it :
Instead of posting a POSSIBLE fix, wouldn't it be nicer for you my dear NcSoft to revert to the old updater until the new one is bug-free? Why do i have to literally spend my precious free time trying to FIX YOUR DAMN ERROR!? In case you didn't notice, many people are working and want to BLOW OFF SOME STEAM with a game INSTEAD of wasting hours of their lives trying to make something work OVER AND OVER again!

Yes, i was able to run the game once with your possible fix, then i tried to re-play with no success in bypassing the damn updater..

So a question if i may : You said that in order to handle the game at it's new state you needed to make this faulty updater.. Are you going to FIX the damn thing in the NEAR FUTURE, or we'll have to PREY to whatever Gods we pray to in order to play this game!?

just ran into the same problem (which is strange seeing as I've played and updated since this thread was started)

system: XP sp3
AV: ESET (I disabled firewall even though I have both COH files as trusted apps)

error: could not rename cohupdater.exe to cohupdater.prv

I noticed I had a cohupdater.new but no cohupdater, just cohupdater.EU.exe... sooo, I renamed the cohupdater.NEW to cohupdater.exe and its worked.

I will say missed a post earlier that said you can download a new EU updater from:

I did that last night, backed up my original updater and placed this new one there. I ran it a couple of times last night and again this morning and its been working. I guess only time will tell if it will continue to work! Fingers Crossed

I finally found a fix that works from one of my SG mates which basically bypasses the updater, of course next time they patch or something changes, not sure if dxp being turned off will do it, I'm going to be snookered again.

Next time you release something like this a good idea might be to not release it on top of early access people have paid for on a dxp weekend and maybe even test it before you hamper/annihilate a whole bunch of peoples ability to play the game, just a thought.

This sucks. Done everything they say and nothing works. Not getting any errors. The damn updater just keeps trying to connect. I even went to the link to send them the info and the link kept having a problem. Even re-installed the game and it is still doing the same thing. Best I have done is get to "Verify Files" part but, after verifying the files it hangs up again.

Are we going to get any help beyond "this should work"? How about testing something before rolling it out before double xp weekend as well as after people have spent extra money on Going Rogue early...

Any help would be appreciated, and I don't want to do the "bypass the updater" route, since I want to get updates and patches when available.

Strange problem seems to afflict the EU Client these days. More players like me have downloaded the trial, installed it, patched it.
When all the operations are done, i clicked on "Next", then agreed with the EULA. The Loading splash screen appears, but the game doesn't starts.

Any idea about it?
