Carnies in Peregrine

Anyone have any advice for finding Carnies in Peregrine? I have the mission from Harvey Maylor to defeat 50. It says to look around Poseidon Square and Mera Heights. I haven't had much luck, just spent 1/2 hr looking around and have killed a grand total of 12. At this rate the mission is gonna take over 2 hrs and be painfully boring.

This is why I say that any hunt mission of over 20-25 foes is an intentional waste of time. "Hunt 50" is a crock, IMO.

My advice is to either use your mission drop or kill non-Carnie mobs to pass the time. It's been a while since I was blue-side, but I could have sworn that some of the spawn points were coded for multiple factions to spawn. So killing off one spawn could make way for it to be repopulated with a spawn of another faction.
At least killing the other spawns is good for earning a little XP/Inf/Drops in the meantime.
Keep moving and keep killing.

Good luck!

I was gonna try to tough it out, but I think your advice was best. I dropped it and moving on to next task. It's a shame really. 90-95% of the time this game is hands-down the best MMO I've ever played with great game mechanics, content, support, etc. Then 5-10% of the time they have missions like this that you find in crappy time-sync MMOs. Oh well, just have to focus on the 90-95% (and be happy the good FAR outweighs the bad).

Yeah, that one's a bit odd, as there aren't too many hunt missions with that high of a counter (or with that rare of a mob on the streets). The earlier advice to drop a lot of mobs is a good one, as a lot of the mob space in Peregrine is shared... you could see Carnies, Malta, Rikti, or Crey in a lot of the spots.

Carnies usually spawn in the central area of Peregrine, but you can find them in the docks on that SE side. Sometimes there are big spawns of them hanging out on ships.

Heh, I just got this mission as well the other day. I couldn't drop a mission yet, so I just paused with him and played another alt (good thing about COH as well). He'll be ready to drop it when I play him again.

I'm glad it didn't keep your experience down, as this really is a good game, as you said.

When I get these, my next step is to take a Carnie radio mission. That usually works just fine.

Note that one or two of the "Hunt 50 Carnies" missions are actually "Hunt 50 Carnies in Peregrine Island". In that case, the radio mission won't work, so your best bet is to give the contact the one-finger salute and drop the mish.

For Carnies hunts, my usual recourse is to drop it.

Well, sadly, the next step (or the next, next step) in the mission chain was a find the hidden entrance mission (another that falls into the 5-10% category in my mind). So I page a GM and 30 min later I start the next mission. I do love this game, but will always be puzzled why they do so much SO WELL, but then do the rest so poorly.
Anyhow, bottom line is that I would not recommend the Harvey Maylor story arc.

Holy crap, finishing this mission yields a defeat 65 Carnie mission. Is this the absolute worst story arc in the game?

Arguably, yes. In regards hunts most assuredly

Well technically only the 65 one is part of the actual arc, the two different 50s are just generic hunt missions he gives out. While the hunts are annoying, I actually quite liked Harvey's arc. But then my character is an AR blaster so he chews through carnies no problem.

The arcs that most annoy me in terms of hunts are the one's given out by the Hansen brothers in Striga. They both have good arcs but the hunt missions are rather annoying. Striga gets hazard zone sized spawns and the missions tend to be in areas that are even con for you which makes it hard (or at least slow) for a lot of characters.

I always liked the arc, personally. Pretty much the only requirement to liking it is being able to deal with the Carnies without too much of an issue. They're usually a fun challenge, so I like it (and they're usually easier on a character that has some defense to drop their end drain on defeat). From there, the story is pretty interesting, as you slowly unravel how the Carnies work and track down Vanessa Devore. Actually, I'd say it's on par with a lot of those arcs in the 40s, as what you are doing sounds quite important (as well as being interesting). Taking on all of the plots Nemesis has, finally dropping the Countess Crey, etc.

Hunts are always pretty "meh." As Hawkwood pointed out, the second to last Striga arc is a pain because of all the hazard zone spawns you have to deal with. Stephanie Peebles earlier on is pretty easy, as the spawns are smaller, etc. in the port area. Taking on 5-6 War Wolves at once in the mid-20s is usually a bit tricky for most characters, though (especially since you'll probably have a boss and a couple of lieutenants in there). All that's too bad, as the Striga arcs are pretty interesting.

Hrm. I never had a problem with the "hunt carnies" missions.

I think it's the Bayside Docks area... anyway, the moored cargo ships usually have a Carnie group spawned there (if not more then one group), and if they don't just kill everything on the ships, circle around and wait for the respawns.

Probably the easiest way to rack up Carnie kills in PI is to find Master Illusionists. The mobs they summon count as Carnies, and usually fall pretty quickly if you have any decent damage-dealing capabilities.

You may not realise that most of the 'hunt' missions are very old content, from when the game was first released and expected to conform to an older definition of the MMO, which was basically bad design that players got used to for some reason. (see: Everquest)

Newer content and missions have very few to zero street hunts, and never quite as annoying as that. They really need to go back and revamp the older content, though.

Even City of Villains, which is by no means "New", is quite low on hunts. Our devs catch on very quickly to what is and isn't fun, and try to give us more of the "is fun" than the "isn't."

The one hunt I do rather like is the series of hunts in Numina's TF. Sure they are pointless and go one for a while but they're an iconic part of the TF, something besides door missions.

My friends and I were unfortunate enough when we decided to run Numina during Halloween event of 2008. Zombie invasions followed us from zone to zone. So instead of normal, around 40 minutes Numina TF, it became 2+ hours TF. We had moratorium on Numina during Halloween event of 2009 as result

Interesting....

I used to hate these carnie hunts.

But I have done them both twice in the last two days, and completed them in 10-20 min in all cases.
(Two with a full team, two solo)

I decided that the devs had redone the spawns as it was so easy.
I was finding many in the regular place, toward the north before you reach PortalCo.
But I found quite a few in the middle where malta usually were, and middle, east side of the island.
I was even spotting carnie swarms toward the south, near Vanguard, mixed in with all the Nemesis.

I was surprised, and pleased.

Edited to add:
I just went and looked again. and there DO seem to be less than when we were running them before, but there were still more than there used to be.

Do carnies only come out at different times of the day? I don't remember. I must say I usually haven't had much of an issue hunting carnies, but then, after 4 years you kinda get a 'feel' for where particular spawns like to hang out.

One thing I found interesting though was during the numina TF. Defeat the Council in Boom Town.. that mission has gotten rough! you know how fast the 5Th column go through those things!! xD

lol I volunteered to do the Council bit just the other day and was really embarassed at how long it took! Felt like a right newb

On the other end of the scale however, I have also been doing the Croatoa Kelly Nemmers arc with its hunt x mishs for the first time in ages.
Defeat 15 Fir Bolg in Misty Woods sounds a breeze or would be if you can find any! I spent 30 mins on patrol before I got the 15. I was also using the taunt and retreat back into the Woods method.
That did include a couple of minutes getting my second hit on sally so that was a bonus but I am not a fan of those location based hunts.
Cheers

There are usually loads of Fir Bolg in the 'finger' of the Misty Woods zone that points out into the lake. If there aren't any there on the first try, circling out and letting the groups respawn usually does the trick.

Carnies are best hunted working a pattern from:
- the two cargo ships across the island from the ferry.
- from there head north to the center of the island to a block with a warehouse and open storage shed, about hte middle of the map.
- from there head northeast to the open area by the shore, to the east of the big office building a block or two north of the shed.
- and finally, pass through the short alley heading north out of the open park, and look to the left.

Carnies, Nemesis, Rikti, and Malta spawn in those areas, in a pattern which I have been told is tied to time of day, but may as well be random. If some other opponent is in the area, you will cycle through them to Carnis faster if you have the muscle to take out the "wrong" foes standing there. Work back and forth on that route, from the ships to the alley and back.

Higher level Carnies spawn in a few other spots around the island, but they will be beyond you in the low 40s.

My scrapper doesn't need an AoE. She IS an AoE.

I must have done something wrong because I could not get the story arc until I completed the defeat 50 mission. I had a choice between that and generic door missions. I did quite a few of the door missions, but did not get the Find Ellie mission. After getting (and eventually dropping) the defeat 50 mission I got Find Ellie, go figure.
I appreciate all the info here, I'm gonna take a break from this for awhile and play one of my alts today, since I have the day off (yee-ha). Maybe I'll revisit in a couple days when I will again have option to drop mission.

Also, just dropping an AoE on some near, but no in, the area you need them in and dragging them there works.

Their "arrest" merely has to happen in the correct area, they don't care about where the npcs spawned.
