Why do you pay for two accounts?

36 slots per server per account...

That barely appeases my altitis...

When CoH went live, i got 2 accounts. One for me, one for my kid brother/sister to share. Baby sister didn't like it, kid brother made one guy, into the his 40's... and that was that. Fast forward a few months to a year, i'm out of slots on Triumph... my bro's account is basically unused, so i took over it. (I was paying for it anyways... heh) So there i had 2 accounts. Got a few 50's on second account. Then the extra slots came... and eh, i didn't want to lose the 50's.

Mainly as I have an active roster on Triumph of about 50 characters.

Plus various alts scattered elsewhere.

I like many I know, started our 2nd accounts via a buddy code, so no box purchase was necessary.

I rarely 2 box actively. I have been know to park one at a Positron, whilst the other 'solos' the TF, swapping to the leader to set missions etc. Then bringing the leader in only for the final mission and badge.

Well, let's see. Got a friend of mine into the game a while after I started - he stayed around for about 4 months, got bored, and left. Some time later I reactivated his account (with his permission, of course) to strip IOs and inf off his characters, but I eventually decided to just keep the account active.

These days I usually use the accounts for dual-boxing various encounters (TFs, farming, PLing, clearing my own missions, etc.). Very handy since it means I can have a buffbot along for the ride if I really want to, and I can have multiple characters logged on for whatever is needed.

Originally it was so I could have more slots on my home server. Then they added more slots, so it became mostly moot for that. (I'm not in danger of running out soon.)

However, once I had a 2nd account, I found it insanely useful for all the following reasons.

  • SG management. I can invite myself using my other account.
  • Inventory management. I can pass items to a character on one account to give to a character on the other. There's no way to do this with recipes, though you can do all the rest with base storage bins if you have room.
  • Padding missions for larger spawns. I did this all the time before I16. It's still worthwhile for the teaming inf bonus if you're into farming for cash.
  • Getting badges. Before Ouroboros, this is how I got missed badges on characters that may have predated the badge in question, now outleveled. I still use it for characters who missed a badge that's not in Ouroboros (usually Mayhem/Safeguard). It's also still useful for defeat count badges, particularly for getting such badges on lowbies.
  • Multi-boxing. My preferences in ATs and powersets aren't actually that great for this, but I still do it from time to time. I've "soloed" GMs controlling two Dark Defenders at the same time, for example.
If I wasn't such a stickler for leveling my characters the old-fashioned way, it would be huge for leveling my own lowbies up. While SSK may have made this slower, assuming you could leverage the old optimal XP spread, the lack of a sidekick "leash" has made this so much more reasonable to manage. (You can door sit without an anchor.)

Like a great many others in the thread, I got the 2nd account before we could buy extra slots since 12 wasn't enough. By the time we could buy slots, I had 50's on the account that I didn't want to lose access to.

Then I found other uses so now I would keep it even if I could transfer the 50's to my main account.
- An 'anchor' to solo the Positron TF.
- Any time we're one short to start a TF.
- Park a hero at Faathim since he never gets a phone.
- Various types of 'solo' farming.
- Inviting new toons into the SG.
- Transferring influence.

Talked brother into trying game, leveled a couple of characters on that account along with mine and just cannot part with any of them so keep both accounts going for when I do come on and either dual box or have a friend play along.

I got a second account way before you could get extra slots. That other account is now 90% full, and there would be no way to put them all on the other account without spending like a thousand bucks on slots. =P

But I like the inventory management, too. I can pass things between characters and I don't have to try and find a third party to help me.

I also like dual boxing.

This!

Also to allow my daughter and GF to play without them having to pay.

And, of course, for multiboxing. Nowadays I multibox 4 accounts and when I play with friends and family I will get restless unless I play at least two accounts.

I have been using up to six accounts, but I am currently down to only four.

I have a second account for my kids to play.
I make use of it to help fill in where needed as well.

All around it hasn't been bad and has been nice having that 'second' account when needed.

First it was because my boyfriend and I shared an account and we didn't have enough slots for all of our alts. Then my now husband and I bought a second computer, so now we can play together.

I have 3, although one is currently inactive.

I use them for a variety of things, like badges(Mayhem Missions in particular), transfers, dual boxing, the list goes on.

Yeah I basically have a spare account in case I needed to pad a team or use it to fill out my personal SG base for members and therefore extra prestige and if I needed to transfer items and cash from one toon to another. I never trusted anyone to help me transfer because the sums I'm talking about were FAR too large and tempting to trust with anyone else. I prefer to count on myself.

There are several reason's why I pay for multiple accounts.

#1 Extra storage, for some reason I can never have enough storage per toon or market slots and I refuse to build a personal SG base; having a second account doubles that for me.

#2 Power leveling, I get to PL my new toons to Stamina at which time I decide whether to keep them or not.

#3 Transfering, having multiple accounts makes it easy to transfer items/money from toon to toon.

#4 Farming, ties into #1 but running "farm" missions while dual, tri, or quad boxing means all your recipes are belong to me!

#5 Sever limits, it's a lot more difficult to reach the server limits with more than one account. It also allows me to have a variety of toons ready for specific tasks.

Because my girlfriend wanted to play.

And because I occasionally need a healbot for my solo-impaired badger character.

I found playing Earth and Beyond that having two accounts was really useful for trading items, because I pretty much solo 99.999% of the time. I didn't buy a second account in CoH for a long while, but finally did because I was hoping to get either my sister or my mother to join in the game. I figured even if I couldn't talk them into it, I would have the second account for my use.

Another big reason, once I bought the account, was to set up a Supergroup and invite all of my characters into it. My two main characters (three, actually, plus my main villain) were supposed to be in a team, so I wanted them to have an SG. I went ahead and created one for my characters on Virtue as well, at first just so I could have a "secret lair".

So it was three reasons, actually:

1) Trade between characters
2) Create my own SGs
3) Extra account for family members to play

Honestly, I've never dual-boxed. I do have some levelling pacts, but for the most part I can't really play two characters at the same time, and putting one of them on auto just irritates me in the end.

This thread reminded me of that screenie of that one guy from WoW who had like 20 accounts or more, playing them all at the same time. My wife would kill me if I ever tried that hahaha
