Power Customization= sickness?
The sonic rezz bubbles. Also, brightly colored Ice Slicks on white floors turn your monitor into a laser ray.
High alpha colors of certain wavelengths can cause pain for some people (certain yellows can be particularly vile). If you combine multiple examples of different pain-inducing colors...yeah.
As for making people literally sick...probably not unless they have a preexisting condition. I'm sure you can find some stuff about epilepsy to get more precise on what to avoid but I wouldn't worry about it.

Red: ~Undoing of Virtue on [3 guesses]~
take some gravel first?
Mr. Tealeaf has informed me that bubblers who set to black and red are very annoying and should be beaten with a shovel. So, perhaps that might be one to avoid.
I'm Tealeaf, and I approve of this message.

I was away when it first came out, see i didn't see all the post about it in test or when it hit live, but i've heard about it. I've mostly made natural characters since i'm back so now it's time to have a really flashy character. But.... i always play on lowest setting and i'm color, so i have no idea when my graphics might be a little too much.
Anyone know what kind of effects and what kind of colors are the most likely to give someone sickness? I don't want to incapacitate my whole team. =P |
(Still wishes there was a way to turn OFF customization so that you didn't have to see other people's [sometimes] abominations.)
Nothing makes me sick, although there are some things that bug me.
One is when people don't tone down, or even sometimes amplify already annoying graphics. Worst offender is ice shields. My ice character has them set to a very dull gray, so the graphics show up as a faint white. They still look like ice, just extra translucent. I hate seeing the default ice that you can't see through, or even brighter and denser colors.
I also hate how everyone just colors their stuff black. We have such a broad spectrum and can come up with cool stuff. For instance, I played with a Rad/Thermal Corruptor who colored their thermal powers to the exact shade of radiation so the flames and stuff looked like radiation. So it makes me roll my eyes when I see the 500th instance of pure black fire.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

I teamed with a sonic defender that colored the sonic dispersion (big bubble) an extra bright metallic yellow that made my head hurt from how bright it was. Subtlety can be a good thing.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.
My latest Power Customisation experiment is Everlight, a cosmic powered Rad/Rad Corruptor. Pretty much every power is a different color. All using the Bright graphics with the primary color being a heavy blue for example, the secondary color is the lightest blue from that line.
The only powers that are the same are my three anchor debuff powers, they're all colored Red/Red, when I'm on PuGs I'll say "Red means stop, kill them last", which works pretty well actually.

I hate when someone claims their method of customization is somehow original or superior to another. If I had a nickel for every hero/villain I saw that matched their primar/secondary palettes...I'd have a sheetload of nickels. Wait, I think I forgot my eye roll somewhere.

My Rad/Fire Blaster uses Radiated Fire.
My fire/fire troller uses pale white/blue flames in varying hues. I still get the occasional compliment about the look. I tweaked it a few times to ensure that it was attractive and subtle and didn't overwhelm anyone.
I was in a cave map with a grotesque bubbler that had such hard bright bubbles I couldn't see anything most of the time.
I did it the other way around: I've got my Poison vibrantly colored instead of the sickening dingy yellow/green it was before. All the powers are colored according to the buff or debuff they do: purple for the mez protect, dank teal for the -speed, orange for the hold, etc. With the shocking contrast on the character's costume, it actually looks pretty good.
"Superior" is quite debatable, but so far I've only seen one person using radioactive fire, while I could go count 10 using black fire if I made a lap right now!
And here's your eyeroll: |
well what does that tell you then? Black is obviously a very popular color while *radioactive fire* which ever color that would happen to be if such a thing even looks different then regular fire is not.
Of course black is a popular color. Half the people who play the game sit in their rooms with the lights off and they can't open the window because they're in the basement. Either the bright lights hurt their eyes, or it's cool to be evil even if you're a good guy.
Incidentally, based on conversations with people, I believe more people are likely to roll a Warshade as their first kheld rather than a Peacebringer. Why? Because dark is cooler than light.

I see dozens of powers colored black every day. Mostly black fire. Doesn't turn my head cause it's so common. I do however occasionally see someone with a color scheme that makes me double take and compliment them on it.
For instance:
1) Radioactive fire; Thermal colored to match Rad Blast
2) Pale green "mystic" fire and electricity
3) White-colored spines to look like protruding bones
4) Differently colored sonic buffs that blend the musical scales smoothly
5) Dark purple Plant Control to be deadly nightshade plants
6) All the cool combinations of colors that Phantom Army can have
7) Blue, red, and yellow Energy pompoms used with /e jugglemagic
8) Earth Control colored red and green to make a blooming crystal flower with immob + hold
Three of those are mine. Try and guess!

Nowadays I can't tell the difference between buffs and debuffs unless I see who cast them or try to memorize the colors each teammate has chosen. And if they all have taken red and black (not uncommon nowadays) I can't quickly tell the difference between Tar Patch, Ice Slick, and Liquify.

I won't debate "popular" since it's pretty obvious black fire (black everything really) is popular. What I will debate is boring, interesting, creative.

Thanks all for the answers, I'll keep that in mind. ^-^

...I admit that my Brute's powers are colored Red/Black. But that's because they're supposed to be Mu Magic (which, ironically, is actually Red/White, so I need to go fix that...) But he's SS/WP so no one really cares anyway...
One thing that does bug me though, is Pain Dom's colors. No matter what I pick, I always end up with some color and Black.
I wanted to match the powers of other incarnations of that toon, (Dom/Troller/Mastermind whose powers are all a light grey, except on the MM...), but there's this fugly cloud of Black I can't get rid of...
I have seen some cool Power customization though. The Bone Spines are common. I know someone who colored Pain Dom to match Dark Blast.
I know two people with Pink Dark Miasma. I would like to recolor Dark powers to look like Nictus powers... It may be possible...
Bright sonic dispersion, some dark armor customs makes me nauseos.
A friend has problems with red dispersion.
