Dr. Aeon's Architect Challenge

Hello everyone!

Dr. Ego, er, Aeon here. That's weird, I almost said Egon, but that guy is long dead. Ha ha...ha.

Ahem. So today I was ruffling through some papers my secretary sent me, and it dawned on me - I'm not challenging you people enough!

So I'm here today to announce to you Dr. Aeon's Architect Challenge!

This contest is going to be a little...different from the Architect Awards. This is me challenging your Architect design skills!

So...what should the first challenge be...hrm...I know! We'll start with something simple.

Write an arc where a hero must do evil for the "greater good". Really, villains have to do good for the greater good, it's about time heroes pitch in their fair share!

When you feel that you've made an arc that has the chops to meet these guidelines, send an e-mail to AECommunityContest@ncsoft.com with the following in the subject line:

@Global Name - Arc ID - Arc Name

Submissions for the arc can start NOW and will end on Wednesday, December 9th, 11:59 AM PST. You can only submit your own arcs. No submitting for shy people!

This contest is open to our American and European players, where eligible.

Winners will be announced on Wednesday December 16th.

The grand prize winner will receive a permanent title on a character of their choice among other possible prizes brought to you by Aeon Corp.

Hrm...I'm feeling a bit generous, so here's a tip.

An arc that meets these criteria will just get your foot in the door. Working within these limitations to make an arc with a great story or surprising mechanics will go a long way towards getting you that grand prize.

So, what are you waiting for? The contest starts now! Good luck!

Terms and conditions for the challenge can be found here:

Oooh, I like this idea a lot! None of my arcs currently fit this criteria fully, although one of them gives you the choice to do something quite evil for what your character could perceive as the greater good. Perhaps I could try to see if I can come up with something within the time required. It'll make a nice self-challenge!

I shall make heroes punch puppies and then kick kittens. After that, they will be put in a sack and thrown out of a tall build. WHILE ON FIRE!!!

More specifically:
  • The US except:
    • Rhode Island
    • territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam
    • military installations
    • commonwealths
  • Canada except Quebec.
  • The EU.

I assume that since Washington DC is a district and not a territory that its residents can enter?

Bleh. I could understand this is there were actual physical prizes, but for a yellow title?

Looks like I need to get back to revamping my Dr. Brainstorm arc... though I warn you, Aeon, Dr. B mentions in it that he doesn't think too highly of you. I believe the word "charlatan" was used.

Le sigh. Indeed. And to think I already have an arc that'd fit the criteria (in a Shoot The Dog kind of way) but I'd taken down due to the Ninjitsu bug at release.

At least this time around they included Europe.

I sent a PM to Dr. Aeon, TheOcho and Avatea regarding a potential opportunity for Rhode Islanders to possibly particiate in this contest.

It's up to them and/or the lawyers to hash out, but the following pretty much states Rhode Islanders can legally particiapte without having to file or pay a fee in this particular contest (all this is CoH/NCSoft decision pending, of course)

LINKS

http://www.howstuffworks.com/question541.htm

www.sec.state.ri.us/corps/GC/Games%20of%20Chance.pdf

Of particular interest, the statute, Section 11-50-1 of Rhode Island General Laws, reads:
"Any person, firm, or corporation proposing to engage in any game, contest, or other promotion or advertising scheme or plan in which a retail establishment offers the opportunity to receive gifts, prizes, or gratuities, as determined by chance, in order to promote its retail business, where the total announced value of the prizes offered to the general public is in excess of five hundred dollars ($500), must file a statement with the secretary of state."

All follow-on sub-statutes all reference Section 11-50-1, thus it seems to me Rhode Island is clear of any legal issues in this regard. Since this contest does not provide a prize in excess of $500 (this contest's "as advertised" value is "$0.00"), this should make the requirement null and void and thus allow Rhode Islanders to potentially be allowed to participate in at least ONE CoH contest.

I'm hoping the lawyers/community relations team are able to allow us few Rhodeys a fighting chance this time. Please?

I'm a little confused now.

Not to sound like I'm complaining, as I'm not, but more curious, how come the EU players can enter this one and not the previous competition?

Is it down to the fact that there's no physical or monetary prizes for it?

You know not that I want to look a gifted horse in the mouth, but this first challenge sounds a bit... tricky. You're going to find players who will hate arcs like this since it forces their character's hand, especially if it means having their hero commit acts of evil, no matter how 'justified' the author spins it.

So I've gotta ask, does the arc HAVE to end with a hero performing an evil deed, or can their be a 'non-evil' resolution also present, even if it means dooming the 'greater good' as it were?

You do know that Dr. B is a villain in CoH lore, right? Just don't want you to waste a lot of time.

I really wish NCSoft contests didn't always have this "permit us to publically release
your personal information" clauses. This has always been the deal-breaker for any
participation for me.

Geez. What the hell is wrong with submitting from Singapore? Or any of those other excluded places? New Zealand doesn't strike me as particularly dangerous.

Can you find a way to have these announcements not reach players in the countries you find objectionable?

Why restrict entries based on location? Since this is an entirely in-game contest with no real-world prizes it shouldn't be governed by any sort of sweepstakes / contest laws should it? It's like a costume contest, only the prize is a title instead of inf and it rates AE arcs instead of costumes...

I have a problem with this contest. See, from my point of view, if your actions have a good result, i.e. cause mostly good for the greatest amount of people, then it was a good action. How can I make an arc where a hero must perform an evil act if that act causes the greatest good? Yes, I can probably fake it. It's just hard for me to think of anything which will fulfill those criteria.
