Rep Trolls Beware!
The rep system is still very much in play we just tweaked it a bit |

The whole rep business is an oddly-thought-out mechanism.
I had thought that the bubbles denoted the gradual effects of single agreements/disagreements accumulating over time. Therefore, since I try to be polite and helpful, over time I should accumulate a pretty good stash of positive rep. Ah, how mistaken I was!
What I did not know was that the effect of each +/- rep on your reputation is NOT merely numeric. No, your reputation is affected in proportion to how large the poster's rep is compared to yours. So there I was, sitting at a couple of green bubbles when someone called me a "*********" in successive negative rep messages (one is not supposed to be able to rep the same post twice, but there you go) and I was left scratching my head about it. I read up on it and went into action. Since it is a "game," well, game on.
So I now currently enjoy two aspects of Rep: the anonymous negative rep bounces off of my battleship armor and I can affirmatively bless good posters on the forums with a goodly boost to their own Rep. I am not interested in handing out negative rep, in revenge or otherwise.
The notion that rep received is proportional to the rep of the giver is an egregious flaw. Drive-by anonymous flames are another; that was surely going to cause a lot of grief. So while my thought would have been to allow folks to view comments only if desired, the system has not followed my sort of thinking in any other aspect, so there it is.
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
Heres the solution.

Again, I'm available for hire... just putting it out there.

I only read every 4th word in this thread, so I don't know if this has been said yet or not...but someone needs to say it.
This is just another PVE NERF made because of PVP!!!! The devs hate red rep (and villians)!
Dispari, I agree. I enjoy reading the comments I get, either way. Especially as a novice poster in these forums, the comments are both encouraging and informative. And some of it has been fun (scapperlock lore abound!).
I don't know if this is a feasible technical solution or not, but perhaps doing away with neg rep entirely while keeping positive rep will reduce the number of comments that cross the forum guidelines. This would be nice to have, although it seems that the forum software likely does not provide for exclusively removing neg rep and comment while keeping and displaying positive rep. |
How much grief there was, and how much was over sentistive responces that took up mod time is an unknown.
Having seen the tales of woe and distress over very simple and non-mean comments about MA stories, I'm betting that the term griefer is used by people who dont know what that word means.
I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.
Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.
So sad to be ending ):

On the old boards they eventually took away the stars for individuals because of the silly abuse and distraction. I suspect it's only a matter of time before the new mods come to the same conclusion of "it's not worth the hassle."

No just a ban or a warning, when that was forwarded to a mod.
Which they've stated they have been monitoring. I'd bet money that since the rep system was implemented, the folks who don't take ANY negative comments well (constructive even if they are) were probably bombarding them with forwarded neg rep issues. Not surprising. |
Which works fine.
Those who want to rep and see comments can. Those who don't, don't. Really should have been that way from the start. Glad it works this way now. So folks like Uber and Clouded and still use it. Those who find it utterly useless can ignore it in complete bliss. |
You don't get modded for non abusive negative reg comments...which is what the person you responded to was talking about. People who didn't have to worry about the person they negged blowing up like a spaz because instead of telling them something directly they left an unsigned note.
And how do those of us who wanted to see know where they are? |
As to your second point: As I said the real way would be to make it work the way it says: If rep is off, you don't see rep or comments. If it's on, you see rep and comments. Or you can turn off comment viewing and still see rep.
If they can't do it that way, (I'm betting the forum software may not allow them to.) I'm fine with the way the have it now. Since none of us were asked BEFORE hand if we wanted to participate in this "forum game".

Be well, people of CoH.
That's why I understand Niviene's post. The mods really do have other and better things to do than to deal with the neg rep comments that cross the line.

I'm sorry to see the comments go, because
a I found my neg rep comments amusing, for the most part, and
b I liked giving people positive rep comments. It's nice to anonymously compliment someone now and again, IMO.

Have you ever read saftey labels?
Darwin shifts in his grave every time a safety label saying do not put finger in electrical socket is printed, but theres obviously a person or two out there that would indeed stick their finger in the socket without the warning...
Therefore, since a couple people could not handle a few negative rep comments, the whole system must be stripped down to the lowest common denominator so that these poor souls do not get all butthurt and emo /wrists.
Welcome to Earth. Enjoy your stay (until of course, your enjoyment must also be brought down to the lowest common denominator, at which point it will no longer be enjoyable)
Since it's obviously very difficult, I'll explain it in detail.
There are people that like to play the rep game, complete with the flaming and antagonism. For them, the way the system was before (with comments appearing on the Control Panel page) was fine as it was. That is how it should be for them.
There are people that did not want anything to do with the rep game. They should have the ability to disable the rep system in its entirety. That means people should not be able to post negative rep OR negative comments on these posts.
Simple. Those that want to play the game can and without the current inconvenience, and those that don't need not be concerned by it in any way.

There were several people that refused to follow the forum rules and guidelines posted by NCSoft. Their constant abuse of the rep system finally forced the mods to disable a feature you and I and everyone else was enjoying.

Or, like a big boy and an adult... you could simply NOT LOOK at things that you know you'll probably be offended by. You know, exercise a little bit of self control? Or is that too much for you?
Why ask some moderator to change the way the boards work for YOU, when you are fully capable of moderating your OWN behavior?
Sorry if I sound a bit snippy, but I'm getting tired of people perpetually suggesting that they have some sort of "right" to "not be offended", ever. In this life you WILL be offended once in a while. That's reality.
If I am looking in the direction of an ugly naked dude that stays in the same place all the time and never moves... and seeing that naked ugly dude BOTHERS me, then guess what? I don't LOOK at the ugly naked dude or in his direction anymore. I don't feel COMPELLED to have him moved somewhere else or to have him forced to put on some clothes. I just DON'T LOOK.
How is that so hard? Someone please explain it to me because I just don't get it.

Sorry if I sound a bit snippy, but I'm getting tired of people perpetually defending the jerks that can't follow the forum rules. If people followed the rules the mods wouldn't feel compelled to change anything.
Obey the rules, how is that so hard? Someone please explain it to me because I just don't get it.
Who said I was defending the jerks? For someone to be offended, it has to come from BOTH sides, the sender has to send and the receiver has to receive.
If the sender acts properly and the receiver acts properly, then there's no problem.
If the sender acts IMPROPERLY and the receiver ignores them, then there's no problem either.
That's all that I'm saying. Jerks are still jerks no matter what. You just have the power to not pay attention to them. So why give them attention?
Why make someone else step in and do it for you, when you can just ignore them yourself?

You and I and everyone else can still enjoy the little Rep game, except for those of us that considered reading the comments as part of the game. Sure, we can still read them if we slog through all of our posts clicking each one, but that's rather tedious and time consuming. And in some people's opinion, not worth it.
As an example, I've had people post rep on a post that was well over a month ago and in a thread that has been inactive for over a month so isn't on the first page even with an expanded listing of threads. To be able to read comments, how far back am I going to have to check?
Either disable it entirely, disable the ability to post comments if you aren't going to let us easily see them, or just put it back the way it was and deal with the PM's. If people are abusing the PM system with needless PM's about negative rep comments, let them know that the comments are within the forum guidelines and after two such notices warn them that further PM's about rep comments that follow the forum guidelines will be met with a temporary ban of the complainer's account.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
