Weirdest Rescue Ever

Okay. I just had a radio mission (a rescue) where apparently the "situation" really really did not match the villain group I was up against.

Check out the chatter between the rescuee and her captor. Does this seem a little odd to anyone else?

Anyone else encountered missions where the crime and the perpetrators seem like a very unlikely match?

Yes, that sort of thing happens. Clockwork that talks like street criminals; Trolls that sound smart.

Well, I recall running into a redside mission where a Circle of Thorns boss "calls me out in front of the press", and when I show up it's a Behemoth. Must have been an interesting interview. And there's all the Carnival of Shadows bosses and occasional CoT succubus who get referred to as "he" in the mission description. Clearly the CoT and Carnival have great skill at cross dressing.

Oh, and it was actually even weirder. After I posted, I took a look at what was said before what I showed.

Here's the full transcript of the conversation...

Quote:
[NPC] Cog: We can afford to let you live if you help us, how's that?
[NPC] Audrey Farber: Look, I'll just put it simply: Crime just doesn't pay. Seriously. How much do you guys make?
[NPC] Cannon Prince: Actually, you know, she might have a point.
[NPC] Cog: The money may not be great, but evil is it's own fringe benefit!
[NPC] Audrey Farber: These guys are idiots.
[NPC] Cannon Prince: I ain't ready to go straight yet!
[NPC] Audrey Farber: So many criminals are just dumb. 9 times out of ten, they'd make more if they just got a job.
Perhaps I am just too easily amused.

At least the boss didn't do the punchline to the leprechaun joke.

Come to think of it, I've never heard a clockwork do that one (BP masks on the other hand seem to have a particular fondness for it though).

You guys need to stop interrupting the Clockwork King's roleplaying.

Yep, as noted, happens all the time with radio and newspaper missions. My favorite common by-product of that little design flaw is the missions where Sky Raider Jump Bot bosses talk like low-level Mafia soldiers. Perhaps they have more sophisticated AI than their normal-mission dialogue would lead you to believe.

There's one I had recently that sort of works into this. The mission was to rescue a cop who tried to go under cover into a villain group, but got found out and is now in trouble. The Villain group he was trying to get into? Circle of Thorns. And he wondered why his disguise didn't work.

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

There's a story arc circa level 20 that involves an undercover cop tasked with infiltrating the Freakshow. What idiot volunteered for that assignment?

Well, at least with the Freaks there's that holo-projector thing that can make it look like you've got the usual Freak 'attachments'. How in heck was the cop in my example going to act up having been through CoT 'recruitment' already?

True, though, recalling that mission, I rather doubt it could be expected to hold up to the kind of prolonged contact actually pretending you'd joined the gang would involve. (Indeed, if that's the way they equipped their man, it apparently, uh, didn't.)

Again, not very well, apparently, since you had to go rescue him. Still, it could've been worse. They could've sent someone to infiltrate the Clockwork.

Or The Devouring Earth? Then again, I don't recall ever getting them in any radio missions.

My personal favorite was one of the Council hoverbots telling its companion "I hope I'm selected for the Vampyri program". I had to admire its optimistic attitude.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

I guess the Lost are big fans of Lost and wanted some scientists to write a new script for it.

Yaaa . . . forget all those requests for NEW newspaper/PPD radio missions . . .
Let's just have the Devs fix these ones first.

I mean, not that I don't enjoy the occasional laugh, but those laughs should be brought on by something intentional in a professional piece of work like this, I think.

Thanks for necroing this thread. It was fun revisiting and reading through it again.

That said, another one I like is when you get a paper caper concerning some CoT boss you did time with who hit it big. Then it says you didn't like said villain in the can, and you certainly don't like him now. Then it turns out to be a Behemoth or ghost, or Hordling.

I'm really hoping my Dominator gets one of those missions soon, and the boss turns out to be a Succubus.

I'm all set for when that happens to address my team by quoting the mission text, and then declaring, "Actually, I did like her when we were in the Zig together." (eyebrow wiggle)

Not a rescue, but my weirdest kidnap mission was on a lil SS/Invul brute.

Forget who the enemy fraction was supposed to be, but when I got into the mission it was competely empty. The only one on the map aside from me was the hostage. Guess they heard I was coming and ran for their lives!

Heheh I think MAYBE I can top that one. Got a Radio mission somewhere in the 20 levels to rescue a kidnap victim. This was shortly after AE began which may explain what I found. I forget what villain group I was "supposed" to face but when I entered the mission the Villains were are dressed in street clothes and their group.. KIDNAP VICTIMS! Not one of them was considered a valid target so I figured okay lets head upstairs and finr our real victim. I found her but she was guarded by more Kidnap victims and since I couldn't attack and defeat the mob I couldn't end the mission.

I went back down, left the mission and reset. SAME identical group as before. Unfortunatelt I had already dropped a mission a day or so earlier and did not feel like waiting since i was trying to get a Safeguard. I petitioned and I actually stumped/shocked the GM when he arrived. Prior to entering my mission I think he was sure I was crazy and then when he did. "WOW they must be some sort of bleedover from AE caused by a bug!" He autocompled the mission and BOTH of us submitted a bug report.

Hehehe Actually I think this is the new Villan group alluded to for "The Coming Storm". Hundred perhaps thousands of NPCs disguised as normal citizens with special powers. It completely explains how that woman in Atlas Park can hold on to the straps of her purse as the Hellion tries to steal it. Hey I've had "citizens" shove me aside cause I was in their way like I was nothing at all. It's all a Nemesis plot! They aren't really helpless citizens at all they are the next generation of Automotons and slowly the are taking control of the city posing as average citizens. Think about it. Eventually they have enough registered voters to elect their candidates for Mayor and City Council and simply outlaw Super Heroes working within the City Limits. "Hey you want to play Super Hero fine but we don't need your kind here in Paragon CIty. Take your act on down the road to Hartford. Cn or Boston, MA." At this point we either leave town or, being defenders of true and sworn to uphold the laws of the land, we arrest ourselves and send US to jail! LOL
