Whats the most popular origin in the game?

I *always* choose mutant. I was wondering if there is an official list of the origins ranked by the most to least popular

I chose magic because I farm magic... and I like being able to just drop the SOs straight in my alt... instead of ever having to buy enhancers.

I'm primarily tech, because well.... a powered exoskeleton is made of PURE AWESOME!

I'm afraid not. Early on, Statesman said that Mutation was the most popular, but that's all we heard.

I use all the origins, but I tend to use Magic the most and Technology the least.

Magic the most (I have the beginner Hero Magic arc practically memorized) and Science the least (I have more difficulty coming up with a bio for a Science character that isn't really better done as Tech).

My most common is mutant, followed closely by natural and tech. Magic is by far my least frequently used. And I have a hard time coming up with concepts I like that are purely science-y and NOT technological.

There USED to be a fan website I think on the Titan Network where people could register their characters, and you could actually SORT the results by popularity and commonality.

I wonder whatever happened to that database?

The last time statistics were released on this, back around the time of the first anniversary, Mutation was the most popular choice by a significant amount I can't remember, followed by Magic, Tech, and Natural at all about the same frequency, then Science coming in slightly below the others. However, those data included the era of CoH release, the Age of Clones, when there were probably a disproportionate number of characters who were attempts to duplicate the X-Men or other famous mutants from other sources.

These days, the only origin I don't see that often is Science. I think it's partly that Science is more of a Silver Age-y type origin (bitten by a radioactive wombat) rather than the more Modern Age Comics or Manga-influenced stories people tend to make up more often. Additionally, for those who care only about mechanics, low-level Science content for heroes features the challenging Vahzilok, and SO's for most of the other origins are somewhat easier to come by.

Personally, I seem to use Magic about 50% of the time, Natural and Tech each about 20%, and the others the remaining 10%.

I try to have variety, but I end up using Science and Tech the most.

Same here, with Magic very slightly edging out Natural. I only have two Mutants, neither of which I play much.

I see Magic the most in the game, though that's just anecdotal.

from what I've seen mutant and magic are still the tops.

I use tech the most, magic the least. I don't always select the origin based on concept. Many characters I built to play the power set combos, with no concept. On most of these, I've put tech origin because I've found the taser's stun to be quite useful, even at high levels, for buying me a few precious seconds when soloing a difficult opponent. The mutant "dust" with its choke is almost as good. The other origins I'll build strickly as concept, as I don't get much from their origin abilities.

In the beginning, origin didn't mean much to me. I'm not a role player. I just cycled though them with each new character. Then came Vet attacks and I prefer the Nemesis Staff way more than the Black Wand. So this limited me to Natural, Science or Tech. After a while, I have settled on Tech because the little origin ranged attack Taser hold is more useful than the others (DOT Throwing Knives or Tranqualizer sleep Darts).

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

I favor Science and Technology origins myself based on my affinity creating backstories of that nature. Though I do try and use the other origin types with mutation being the least used.

In the back of my mind, based on popularity by DO/SO enhancement availability on the market I tend to think Magic and Mutation are the top origins.

I noticed at higher levels there's no Mutant based villain groups to get SOs from (The Lost is the last one and top out around lvl 30) so I doubt I'd make another mutant since I like being able to use my SO drops to plug holes until I get the IOs. My main is a mutant though.

My latest characters have been Tech which is nice because you get tech SOs from Arachnos, Council, Malta, etc through the top levels. Better yet, you start fighting Tech-origin villain groups early on and keep at it the whole game. My recent characters fit tech as a concept but, if I didn't have a concept in mind, I'd choose tech anyway just for that reason.

Rikti, if I remember right, drop both Tech and Mutation enhancements.

Tech & Science in my experience. I've never had a Mutant SO drop from them except as a mission end reward.

They do have overlap with the Lost in some missions and the Lost drop Mutant SOs.

Edit: When I asked about this a while back, some folks mentioned that the vampires/werewolfs from the 5th Col used to drop Mutant SOs but they were converted to Science types when Council replaced them.

Heroside I go mutant and natural almost exclusively - the primary reason being that you can get L13 damage SO's for mutant and natural origin's from Mr. Yin's store in faultline and since I have 2 accounts with multiple chars on each account that have done the faultline arcs that means by L13 or so I frequently have capped damage on all my attacks - makes a big difference in grinding through the pre-stamina, pre-SO levels especially when you solo as much as I do.

Villainside I go with whatever origin my character concept fits best however my 'generic' characters tend to be mutants, mostly because buying DO's in Cap is a pain for anyone BUT mutants as all 3 clusters of 'shops' in Cap offer something for mutants. Magic is the worst as you can't buy magic DO's in the central shops - only at the port oakes ferry vendor and the magic vendor by the Mercy helipad. Of course, my second favorite concept based origin is magic so often I suck it up and live with it.

EDIT: As for SO's - I use almost no SO's in my characters, so I really don't care what drops I get as I sell everythign anyways. At L22 I slot 1 set of 25 SO's in all my non-attack slots (I frankenslot all my attacks with cheap L25 set IO's) and I upgrade to generic IO's at L27, so after that I don't even bother with SO's.

According to the stats we keep on City Info Tracker, it looks like Natural is the most selected Origin, followed very closely by Magic. Mutation is a distant third, and laggin even further behind are Tech and Science.

Check the stats page out on CIT if you're bored, it's interesting to look at the player trends

I've used all the Origins and gotten at least one of the origins to 50.

I tend to use Mutant and Magic the most, with Magic getting the slight nod right now. Where as when I started almost 5 years ago, mutant got the nod almost exclusively.

My main being a genetically created in a lab/test tube, then magically imbued with the soul of a kitsune, lets me go with science or magic origin, imo. I choose magic, just because I really really hate the sleeping dart attack. :/

My Katana/Regen is Science Origin, and it's my only Science Origin to hit 50. Could of probably went Tech on him, but seeing as how he was homaged after Deadpool, I went Science.

My only Natural Origin characters are my two VEATS (and they wouldn't be natural at all, if I was able to choose their origin), and my MA/Shield (she's half alien).

Normally I avoid the Natural Origin because really, RP wise a regular human isn't going to kick as much *** as the game play allows

Batman kicking Superman isn't going to beat Superman. :P

True, but as you've pointed out, Natural merely refers to baseline ability. It does not presuppose humanity on top of that.

Myself, I tend to make Magic-origin characters, because I don't like the concept of being "powerless" if one were without that special suit, or that crazy weapon, or whatever.

Which is more than a little funny, I think, because my highest Magic character isn't out of the teens, yet. My two level 50 characters are Mutant and Science, and my next-highest is Natural.

I have a really hard time thinking up Magic origins, which is kinda silly because some form of magic can be used to explain pretty much anything in game.

And now that I think of it, almost all of my character's backstories make them more dual-origin than single. Like my Kat/Regen Technology Scrapper. Swinging a sword is more or less a natural (albeit trained) skill, but his healing powersuit is technology. I think a good number of well-known comic heroes/villains probably have overlapping origins as well.

True, except Natural's description states that they don't have to be human, but have abilities natural to their race.

So you could be from a race of fire breathing, electricity spouting wolf-men, and you could consider yourself natural lol..

Anyways, my most two used are Natural and Tech.

Well, Mutant and Science Origin's would imply (though not 100%) that they give you the same thing the Magic Origin would. No reliance on a suit or weapon or whatever. Just themself.

And exactly. Seeing as how my MA/Shield was Alien, it allowed me to take Flight/Laser Beam Eyes/say she had super strength (sadly this was before the new MA animations) and still keep the natural origin.

I know. Sadly, when others say they want a Natural Origin character, they never think of the aliens. They think purely humans. Then wonder why they can't use some of the other sets.
